That's when I knew they were going to lose. Also, pass rush was horrible and they are being burnt for only carrying one free safety on the roster.
Totally agree. I never have liked Danny Smith as much as others have. 2 special teams mistakes in 2 games. I got that same feeling I got in the Saints game last year. I can't get over Kyle Shanahan calling that WR reverse. I thought that really killed some momentum we had on that drive. I also would like to know what Buchanon was doing on that TD pass to Johnson. I don't think the coaches have any confidence in our O-line at all. Heyer even being on the roster shows how bad our depth is. He is terrible. Rabach gets manhandled almost every play. 2-0 going into a game against the Rams would've been really nice...
McNabb in the 4th...He had Galloway WIDE OPEN for a sure TD but missed him. That, imo, was the turning point.
haven't read through all the posts, but if you are talking about the pass that slipped through Galloway's hands, which was, as the announcers pointed out, almost a 70-YARD THROW, I DO NOT fault McNabb, that was as accurate as any other QB would be in the league...
Keep complaining about plays like this, and people are going to think JC was better... by the way, where are all those JC lovers and praisers who believed he was the franchise QB of the future... how is that working in Oakland??? I believed he got yanked today...
all the replays clearly showed that the ball was just outside of galloway's reach. this game is not on mcnabb though, he played lights out. i only listed that because when we missed that play i got the "here we go again" feeling.
I am not arguing that it was just out of his reach, but it hit his fingertips, and it was almost a 70-yard pass... 70 yards... give him a break, what do u want when McNabb puts the ball on a guys fingertips 70 yards down the field... this is starting to sound like the iggles fans when i lived in Philly...
My children, gather round! No retreat, no surrender; that is Spartan law. And by Spartan law we will stand and fight... and die. A new age has begun. An age of freedom, and all will know, that 300 Spartans gave their last breaths to defend it!
We should have won it. We choked. The holes in this team left by Vinny and Danny are glaring. But I'm still amazed that Shanahan and Allen were able to account for as many weaknesses as they did. There were some very bright spots in this game.
I agree with this to a point. They have been able to account for a number of weaknesses; however, they have also created a bunch more holes and weaknesses with their decision to move to a 3-4. We just don't have the personnel for it and that has been glaring. Even Fletcher, arguably our best defensive player last year doesn't look comfortable in it. Out dline is awful right now and a guy like Carter, who was awesome last year, looks lost out there in this new system. We have promising young players like Jarmon not even active because they don't fit into this scheme, or not making an impact (i.e. Chris Wilson), and we have the Haynesworth saga to deal with as a result also. Kemo has been a huge bust so far, Carriker, despite a nice play or two today, has looked innefective, and Golston just looks downright awful.
I question how much you know about the 3/4. Our entire DLine is on a constant rotation. That I don't agree with. I personally would like to see guys stay in there so they can keep their motor running. Carriker had arguably the best game for the dlineman today. Didn't he have a sack and a tackle for loss? I could be mistaken. Overall, the 3/4, and this is how it was explained to me, is a defense set up for the linebackers to make plays......
...Constant complaining is very tiresome and old and I question why some of us even try to explain things

You can't cover over a loss. Plenty of things to blame for this one. But it was a game of extremes; it was a shootout; it was a very close game against two clearly skilled teams. Despite whatever stats get thrown around here, it was really well played by both sides. (Shootouts always make both teams look weak in a way that they really aren't.) This was a great game of football.
Frankly, this loss doesn't bother me that much. (I mean relatively speaking, of course. When can anyone ever say that a loss wasn't a bad one?) I really think the Skins played hard and played a tough game. All things considered, they did a good job. We look like a different football franchise than the Redskins of 2-3 years ago.

And, in the final analysis, we looked pretty good, in my opinion. And I was proud of the effort our guys gave it on the field.
My sentiments exactly!!!! I'd go further by saying that what we discovered about this team today is that WE HAVE AN EXPLOSIVE OFFENSE TOO ... and for the first time in many years.
We've got some tweaking to do, and maybe a couple of players away from being strong contenders.
I hate losing ... but this is perhaps a team that played better today than the one that won last week ... and that's progress. That we were 17 points ahead is hard ... but it's also a position we haven't seen much of either, especially against a very good team.
I'm disappointed in the loss, but encouraged by what I saw.

Totally agree with this. Eight months ago when Shanahan got hired I would've never thought we would be playing as well as we did today so soon.

That, I think, is why I can't shake the miserable feeling. This was not last years (or even last weeks) Redskins, and we didn't win. Despite the offensive onslaught, I'm still the same fan who can't help but find myself unable to generate much excitement, because I'm waiting for something bad to happen.

SOMETHING MAGICAL IS ABOUT TO BEGIN!"

We just got exposed. We cannot have a safety get all the tackles and make all the plays then expect to defend the pass. We are just not good enough yet. Buchannon sucks, I don't know how he beat out Tryon for the job. The D just plain got lazy IMO in the 4th. We had it won, but again we snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory. Nice to see we can score points, but would be nice if we can score when needed. Andre Johnson one on one with a safety is a lot like Roy Williams wide open at the end of last week. We have serious breakdowns in the secondary towards the end of games. We need to close games out. We had it won. It is a sickening feeling to even go to OT with a 17 pt lead midway thru the 2nd half. It seems this was the same probs we had for the past few years, our D just can't friggin hold towards the end. Where is our running game? I mean, we are a smashmouth football team... CP has no burst anymore, LJ is like an old man with a walker....
The Good:
Carlos Rogers got an INT, yes CARLOS! Nice Job.
Our front 7 is Ok, we will need a few more LB's but we need DB's STAT!
McNabb is amazing, yah he missed Galloway, but dang, when was the last time we have seen a guy in B&G throw long passes like the ones we saw today.
Landry is a BEAST.
#21 (36) This IS and will always be the High watermark where all new DB's are measured.
I just walked in my house (in Chicago) from the game. Few points.
Although we lost (and blew a 17 point lead), Houston was supposed to be one of the best in the league, and I expected a pounding.
We have an...cough...and explosive offense.
Our running game will hopefully get corrected, but Larry Johnson should be cut. He's wasting a roster spot, and I'm real curious to know why Portis wasn't playing in the end of the 3rd for a couple drives. That hurt.
The ref's blew many calls tonight plain and simple.
I'm hoping that having Moore back at Safety will help our passing defense, because it was horrible. Many times Carlos was playing as if he expected inside help, and there was none. What was Bucannon doing on that last TD to Andre Johnson? Looked like he totally miss read the ball. We had double coverage on him too.
Our special teams cost us big in the last two. Missed snaps, blocked FG's, missed FG's. Come on Danny.
If Williams is down, we are down for the count. Heyer is not going to cut it.
We learn from this, and get better, but I'm looking around the East, and I think we are the team to beat right now...
Miss you 21

Hurt his right wrist/hand. They were concerned that he couldn't hold onto the ball.

Against Dallas that was actually London Fletcher's blown coverage.
My only question is why don't we "mix it up" and shift down into a 4-3 for at least a few plays. We couldn't stop the run or the pass today and the only adjustment we made was to blitz more and more and more...I like the agressiveness, but too much of anything will kill you.
One holding call not called on Alex Barron and this team's 0-2. One 70 yd bomb 6 inches closer and this team's 2-0. Such is the NFL.
But seriously, 530 yds given up by the defense...the 3-4 is going to make us 3-13.
As good as some players played, I was shocked how poor others were.
I am one of the most vocal McNabb critics, and I can't even say anything bad about him today. But, here are a few players who are darn near worthless: Heyer, Horton, Fred Davis (couldn't block me and I was watching the game from the stands), Rogers, and (of course) Haynesworth.
Haslett must of thought he was preparing for the UFL's Las Vegas Locos passing attack by the gameplan he came up with.
This game has to blamed on Haslett. While our aggressive defense kept Houston at bay in the first half.
Haslett failed to make the necessary adjustments in the second half.
We had a 17 point lead in the second half. At this point Houston has little option but to pass the ball.
We could have easily went to a nickle, dime or even quarters and play coverage for the rest of the game.
Instead of giving up quick strikes for scores!!!!!!!!!!!
I knew it when we hired Haslett. He was going to be a weakness. I just hope he watches the tape and learns from his mistakes.
Doughty, Horton and Heyer played crappy. Still Haslett did not put his defense in the best position to succeed in the second half.
At worst we could have minimized damage by letting Houston drive down the field slowly.
If we would have dropped six, seven or eight it would have likely resulted in at least an interception on one of those drives. This game is mostly on the defense. Sure our rushing game was pathetic. Still we had a seventeen point lead at one point that could have been preserved.
This team is definatly better than the last few years, the one constant between them is we just can't put teams away. I hope Shanahan can instill the mentallity that it's a 60 minute game not a 50. Too many times in games the Skins dominated just given away in the 4th quarter. It is tough to keep watching but I still am!!!!!

Well, on a bright note, we are tied for first place in the NFC East and are playing the rams next week. The other east teams play Houston, Jacksonville, and Tennessee. We have problems and its a growing pain, but at least we are looking like a competent team once again.
This loss really stings. We had so many opportunities to lock down the win, on offense, defense, and special teams. We should be 2-0 with a one game lead on NY, and Philly and a two game lead on the Pies. Instead we are in a three-way tie. I had this as one of the games we might lose prior to the season, but that doesn't make it any more pallatable. anytime you are up 17 in the 2nd half, there is no excuse for letting that slip away.
Andre Carter wrote:Damn man, you know your football.
I hear some of you blaming the lack of a running game for the loss, and others blaming the defense. Both the offense and defense blew this game. Yes, our running is game is pathetic, but our passing game was shredding their defense the entire game and we had several scoring opportunities in the 4th qtr that we failed to take advantage of. Our defensive front 4 blows at putting pressure opposing QBs, and our secondary couldn't cover a team full of Betty Whites. They were leaving the Texan receivers wide open the entire game. This "pass off" coverage scheme obviously doesn't work. They need to put a body on the receiver and have that guy cover throughout the entire route. This game illustrates exactly why Billichick does what he does; when you get up on a team, you keep hammering them so they can't come back. You don't let teams hang around so they can get back into the game. Winners finish teams when they go up on them. Losers do what the Skins did against the Texans....
I wonder what the Houston newspapers are printing? To put things in perspective, they gave up as many passing yards as the Redskins, and it's only because they won that they probably feel good, but their defense got exposed too.
The Redskins are building and trying to lay a good foundation. If you want to buy a Super Bowl, maybe the Redskins should have spent a ton of money in the off season to get Julius Peppers like they did two years to get Albert Haynesworth. Or to get [insert name here of the latest high priced free agent] That approach hasn't worked. Improving through the draft is how the Redskins will get better players. The Denver Broncos in Mike Shanahan's first year as head coach had both John Elway and Terrel Davis (He ran for over 1,000 yards), but the team didn't make the playoffs and finished 8-8.
All teams lose and with a new coach and system that doesn't mean the team is the same as before. There is a new culture that is apparent when you hear the players speak. Look at the Vikings. They are mortgaging their future by being smitten with Brett Favre. They were only a few plays away from winning it all last year with Favre, and now he is a great liability as everybody expected him to be. Would you rather be the Vikings or the Cowboys or the Redskins? The first two teams were anointed Super Bowl contenders three weeks before the season started and now both teams are 0-2.
To add additional perspective: the Colts just destroyed the Giants last night. And yet the Texans made the Colts look like a mediocre team on week one. This was a very tough opponent, and considering how close the game was, I am feeling good about the way the Redskins are positioned for this year. I woke up today feeling completely normal, not depressed about the game whatsoever.
This felt a lot like the New Orleans loss last year. Lining up for an easy field goal to potentially put the game out of reach... botch job... can't do anything to stop them with the game on the line... go to OT... crazy play to give them the ball (Sellers down or not down, made field goal-time out-missed field goal)... game over...
We just don't have the studs to take the next step, nor the depth to withstand any injuries (Heyer, Horton, Doughty, Slow-Larry Johnson, etc...)
Oh and is it just me, or does it look like D-Hall is playing man coverage and C-(stone hands)Rogers is playing zone? Rogers doesn't look like he attempts to run with his guy, he just seems happy to be in the general area. He gave up over 300 yards on his own...
Just to add more food for thought. In that 1995 Season the Denver Broncos under first year Head coach Mike Shanahan beat the Washington Redskins with a 43 yard pass from John Elway with no time left on the clock to win the game. I am sure you remember that pass, that loss. What you probably don't remember is who caught the pass? It was the first catch by a rookie who was an undrafted free agent. Anybody??? It was caught by some rookie named Rod Smith who became Denver's best wide receiver. Maybe there were players yesterday that will be future stars, they just haven't emerged yet.
That Texans team is GOOD!! Our D came after them and Schaub still lit us up.
I'm proud of the passing game, and I'm not that mad that we didn't get many yards on the ground; we didn't need the run as much as usual, and it seemed like to me that any running was just to set up the pass. However, Portis showed his terrible balance on a couple key plays and L.J. looks so old and slow that he shouldn't get the ball. Nice to see Anthony Armstrong make a couple plays.
Landry is so fast; yeah he makes a few bad plays a game, but he makes more great plays to make up for it. He is being used exactly how he should be now. Doughty and Horton both are not playing well. There were a ton of missed tackles in the backfield, it seemed like everytime someone had a chance to stop the run for a loss it ended up being a few yard gain.
Those guys fought hard out there, if they keep playing like that they won't lose many more games.
