DetNews: Redskins Still Want Ricks

Lions: Notebook
Carter likes look of Lions' offense
By Jerry Green / The Detroit News

Daniel Mears / The Detroit News

Mikhael Ricks was second on the Lions last season in receiving yards (434) and third in receptions (37).

Cris Carter, former NFL All-Pro receiver turned TV analyst, is the latest member of the national media to praise the Lions.

Carter writes for Yahoo! Sports, and in response to a question on his Web site, he said:

“I believe (Joey) Harrington will progress in his third year. And it sure helps that the Lions have added some talent around him.

“The combination of rookie Roy Williams and second-year player Charles Rogers at receiver should be great ... and rookie running back Kevin Jones from Virginia Tech undoubtedly should make Harrington a lot better.

“After kind of moving sideways the last three years, the Lions are heading in the right direction.”

Carter should know receivers, quarterbacks and offenses. He was one the most prolific receivers in NFL history with the Vikings and Eagles.

Ricks update

Mikhael Ricks quickly located three suitors in the first few days after his release by the Lions.

The Jets are eagerly trying to sign Ricks to add a tight end to help Chad Pennington run his offense, according to the Bergen Record on nfl.com. But the Packers and Redskins are also bidding for Ricks, who was second on the Lions with 434 receiving yards last season.

He was released by the Lions two weeks ago, after they signed Stephen Alexander, a free agent who had been with the Redskins, as their starting tight end. The Lions have two other, younger tight ends, Casey FitzSimmons and John Owens.

Why not someone said,
Because you already have a bunch of TE's on your roster, and a draft pick that you traded a nexts year pick for. Spend the money on some DE out there that has good work ethic, high motor and wants a shot.

Signing Ricks isn't going to break the bank, and just because we have a lot of tight ends doesn't mean Ricks can't still help us.

Signing Ricks doesn't preclude us from signing a defensive end...

We could go into camp with 20 tight ends....doesn't mean we'd keep them all.

The least it will do is raise everyones game since they'll be competing.

If Ricks is signed we can say good bye to Robert Royal (always injured), Kevin Ware (undrafted project), and Leonard Stephens (injured NFL Europe).

That would leave us with Cooley, Kozloski, Rasby, and Ricks...4 TE's is not much considerring 2 start in a Joe Gibbs offense...plus one on the practive squad.

Look. Let Ricks go somewhere else and let's groom Chris Cooley for our H-back position. That's why we signed him, right?

I don't necessarily disagree with having a ton of TEs...only to cut the ones we don't want; however, it will probably cost some money to sign him and, frankly, we have enough TE's on our roster...and we don't need anymore!

This team should focus on other areas of need...like our DL!

I don't think we will sign Ricks, and I agree that we do not need him. But I can understand why we would sign him.

Cooley was drafted in the 3rd round and even though he led the nation as a tight end last season he was playing in a smaller college division where the opponents and his coaches were not close to the elite divisions in NCAA.

Cooley could use Ricks, Rasby, and Kozloski as mentors. A one year deal for Ricks would be justified considerring Cooley should be ready to go by 2005...if not sooner (best case scenerio).

Cooley has said it himself, this is a whole different level and a single practice almost equals a week of his Utah State practices.

I think Ricks will sign with someone else that has a bigger plan for him, with the Skins being his last choice and that is just what the Skins would want...they are not being aggresive on this one.

Oh, Gambit...does this explain it for you? DEPTH/MENTOR is not garbage. You have Dan Campbell mentoring Jason Witten...then after that? Maybe you'll re-sign Tony McGee?
It is not uncommon for teams to overload on a position then cut down in late August. The Skins will have at least 4 TE's on their active roster considering Gibbs' offense.

If he's better then what we have on our roster, bring him in. Release some of our tight ends and go with this guy. If Joe wants him, then so do I.

Folks can continue pretending that this is just more Snyder being Snyder (Gambit), but Gibbs is running this show.
OK keep picking thru the garbage.

That's right, Gambit. But, y'all may want to take a look at some of the "garbage" that Gibbs has found over the years.

Try names like Jacoby (UFA), and Riggins (sure, a remarkable talent, but still a salvage job). Most of them were every day, blue collar types, but he managed to find lots of usable talent in among that football refuse... and Gibbs is betting that there's more to be found.

We have already signed rasby, baxter, and kozlowski, and drafted cooley to go along with the Te's we have. We already have plenty of average TE's and a promising rookie who we sacrificed alot for to pickup in this years draft (2nd round next year). So with that being said I think were pretty set at that position.

JonC56 you answer has been the most str8 to the point. You already have Decent TE's on your roster, and you sacrificed a second rounder next year for a TE this year. In my eyes he needs to do what are Jason Witten did. To be picked in the 3rd this year and to have given up a second round next year. Cooley should be rotating with what ever starting TE you guys will have.

Look, if we bring him in and we like the guys we have better, we can cut him. He isn't going to command some crazy signing bonus or anything.

Also, he's a special player. Yes, he is a tight end, but he is nothing like Rasby. While Rasby is basically an undersized tackle, Ricks is an oversized wide reciever.

He is a tweener, and the things good coaches like Gibbs can do with tweeners are unlimited. There is no good reason not to bring Ricks in.

This would be a zero risk manuever. Everything to gain, nothing to lose...

Gambit and JonC, you're missing the point. What if Ricks is the best TE we have ? What if we stash a few on ST's, if they're fast enough ? If Gibbs is showing interest in this guy, then I believe that he saw something in minicamp that was missing. If Ricks could fill that need, I say sign him.
I don't see how this is "picking through garbage", and I also think that that statement is kind of inflammatory. Since when is ensuring solid competition at camp "garbage picking" ? You can't do it all through the draft. This is an experienced TE that is being pursued by a team that has a very good one already in Green Bay.

Im just scared to go through the same thing again. And thats to waste a draft pick on a non-productive player, and come draft day start to bash ourselves in the head. But you'll never know till you try. If they get him, hopefully he'll turn out.

CLL he wouldn't cost us anything in compensation and Joe must see something in him
