Fool me once...

Post by PulpExposure »

Shame on you, fool me a thousand times, shame on...me?

Nice article about Darth Snyder seeming to take personal accountability for the Zorn disaster...the Zornsaster.

When the Redskins hired Jim Zorn, Daniel Snyder described him as "the right guy." Evidently not; two years later, Zorn was fired, after one of the most embarrassing seasons in franchise history.

I haven't heard much self-doubt from Snyder on this issue, but he provided plenty in his interview with the bloggers from Hogs Haven Tuesday night.

"It starts with me," he said, of his decision to fire Zorn. "It starts with really understanding where we were as a franchise, understanding that hey, I made a wrong decision...admitting that to yourself."

He returned to the topic later, when asked about getting blamed for the Redskins' on-field woes.

"You know...you're responsible as the owner of the team... so because you own the team, it's your fault," Snyder said. "On the other hand, I don't look at it that way. I really see this as a stewardship...it's something that the fans own the team and my responsibility is to try and do the right thing. I think Joe Gibbs...for four years you didn't hear anything about me, and when someone would say anything, Joe would go and say, "Let me tell you what the truth because we better be clear." And then I hired a rookie head coach and we went in a...poor direction. It's the past and I look forward to the future. I've got myself a Hall of Fame head coach, and a fantastic General Manager so we're in good hands."
There's much, much more in there, but the issue sort of came up one last time, when the Hogs Haven guys asked if firing Vinny Cerrato was meant as a symbolic lifeline to Redskins fans that they could start to have hope again.

"That wasn't the driver," Snyder said. "For me the driver was: my intentions are pure. I'm trying to win, OK? I'm trying to do good in the community. I'm trying to be a good father for my kids, trying to be a good family man. I'm also trying to get this franchise to where it belongs which is the Super Bowl and championships, and the highest level both on and off the field. And we were headed in the wrong direction. It's very simple. And the first thing you have to do is look in the mirror and you have to say-and be honest with yourself, you can't say well, 'Hope springs eternal and it's going to get better and what Vinny Cerrato or Jim Zorn says is going to be great.' No, reality is reality. You know, I didn't call two fake field goals in a row."
Which is a shame, because until that point, Snyder had managed not to throw the first-time head coach completely under oncoming traffic. But hey, he deserved it for that one. I just watched The Swinging GateGate again this morning. Man, was that bad.

Oh, and I believe Snyder offered his first public comments on the decision to ban all signs from FedEx Field last season.

"The front office has been changed," he said.

I want to believe, but I know I shouldn't.

I really think he is ...finally...starting to turn around.

I think we're in for a good ride. At least for the next few years. Mcnabb, Shanahan (and his staff), Allen, and a *hopefully* new and improved ownership should make it fun again.

There should never be any doubt that Dan Snyder wants a championship Redskins team. His method may not have been the best but his heart has always been in the right place.

I'll give the benefit of the doubt here. No argument, no long stupid debate, but I'm optimistic.

It's amazing that it took this LONG!!!!

Such a smart guy, but full of hubris. Listening to My Cousin V; allowing this bozo to get in his head.

Vinny was probably telling him: Me-you, we can do this ourselves. It's just like fantasy football, you pick up players in the offseason and just plug them in... easy!

Well that didn't work.

Now we have a real GM, real head coach and staff, real QB and now a real owner who will let the former do what they do best.

HAIL IN 2010!!
I'll think of you in the backfield always #21.

Nothing changes the fact that he mismanaged and led this franchise so badly for 10 years - NOTHING

The fact that we now are where we are and he has seemingly learned from all the mistakes does not make up for the fact that he, for so long, kept making bad decisions for this franchise

Snyder is doing the right thing now but it still bothers me that someone who is reportedly a good businessman made so many horrible decisions in running this franchise

I am looking to the future but I cannot forget the years of frustration with this idiot
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

He is successful at Marketing...and he has excelled at that during a pretty horrible time in franchise history. It has hopefully taken him 10 years to learn a whole new occupation AND be successful at it...

I don't think he's always had a heart of gold and the right intentions. Snyder might . . . might . . . have learned from his mistakes. But he doesn't get the benefit of the doubt from me. He can have my benefit of the doubt when he demonstrates for more than a couple of seasons that he's committed to winning — which means doing the right thing, not inflating your own ego.

Still, I can't deny that he's saying the right things for now. Hopefully his actions will follow the same line.

I don't think people fundamentally change. I also have no doubt that Snyder does want to win (and always has), but just has no idea how. As mentioned, he is a brilliant marketer, but so far has not been a brilliant manager. The Redskins may have occasional bursts of success while he's the owner, but we'll never have long-term, sustained success.

He could always turn it over to me...

While it might be a little undercapitalized, I think I'd be a great owner.

If by dude you mean me, my first call to action is to put up poles randomly in the stands and have the cheerleaders pole dance during the games. They would be forbidden to accept tips. My second item would be to put up a lifesized rubber Snyder replica, so fans could walk by and kick or punch him. No cost of course.

I'm onboard with this - it is going to take a while for this ego maniac to show us that he's changed - he has earned zero respect for what he has done to this franchise

I used to be quasi supportive but too much has happened for me to let this 'little" man off the hook this quickly :D

That's pretty much how I feel on the situation.
