Will preseason games deteremine the #2 QB?

Post by Just Win Skins »

I wonder who will get more reps at QB during preseason; Brennan or Grossman?

Grossman: Pros: Played under Kyle Shanny and understands the system and has experience.
Cons: He's Rex Grossman and his 09 stats below.
http://www.nfl.com/players/rexgrossman/ ... =GRO597298
Started one game in 09 with TDS: 0, INT: 1, YDS: 33, RTG: 5.6

Presenting facts not bashing RG.

Brennan: Pros: Healthy and per the Washington Post grasps K. Shanny's offense, looks great, and is HUNGRY. A stud college QB. Disclaimer: I realize this is the NFL but the kid broke and created numerous passing / TD records.
Cons: Inexperience.

Personally I hope the coaching staff leans on Brennan as the #2.

In a perfect world McNabb stays healthy the entire year. Granted in the NFL the odds of the starting QB leaving a game / sitting out due to injury is probable. I wish nothing but health for all the B&G.

******I took the advice from a very good friend who happens to be a die hard Cowboys fan, yes I'm praying for him, to join a B&G message board. I am really glad I took his advice. I value everyone's opinion and look forward to your input on everything B&G.

WAR B&R!!!!!!!!!!

Every practice session, class session, OTA, Mini camp, etc will determine that.

It's an open depth chart at every position except for very few...those being McRibb, Trent, Casey, London, Orakpo, Hall, Rogers. Everything else including the #2 is open.

As far as I'm concerned, Rex is Rex, and Colt gets a clean slate.

Every year, somebody surprizes... the Redskins are due for somebody like that. My suspicion is that Rex is pure insurance. If Colt is able to take the next step, he could just as easily be the #2. No, I'm not climbing on his bandwagon... but you don't do what he did in college without some talent... no matter who's system you are in.

Right CT.. pretty much Colt gets a clean start cause he still hasn't played a regular season game.

His best year in Hawaii he had 5549 yards with 58 TDs.. I took a look at his schedule that year to see if he played any top "dogs" so to speak and this is what I found...

Alabama- 350 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT.. against Alabama that is GREAT
Boise St- 388 yards, 5 TDs, 1 INT.. Boise St always has a solid team
Purdue- 434 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT... Ok, I know Purdue isn't a top tier team but they are consistent
Oregon St- *box information wasn't available*
Arizona St- 559 yards, 5 TDs, 1 INT... Yea, they suck but I only put up the stats because they are a PAC-10 team

No need to look at the other teams like "Computer State" or "Soda Bottle University" but against bigger teams like the ones listed above the kid got his rocks off.

I know, the NFL isn't college but I'm all for giving the kid a chance based on what he did that year ('06). I only hope he's ready because I have NO FAITH in Rex.

I don't think Shanny will go into the season with a backup QB with no NFL snaps under his belt unless Rex just falls on his face in training camp. I can't remember Shanny carrying three QB on his active rosters

If your backup has to have NFL experience & you only carry 2, how do you develop a future starter (or even backup)?

Disagree... if you think this is a quarterback that has good potential to be your starter, you protect him with a roster spot. You don't gamble by putting that player on the PS.

Like I said Shanny generally only has two QBs on his active roster, and at this time there are only two QBs on this roster that he brought in. The topic was about the #2 QB spot not someone that has good potential to be your starter. I don't think Colt is either but no one has really seen what he can do. It's a new system for everyone, Rex came in as the backup and has been the #2 in Kyle's system. Colt will get the short end of the stick when it comes to reps in practice, because the ones and twos need the work to learn the system.

Colt hasn't done enough to be grab off the practice squad by someone else because another team would have to open up a roster spot for him. I'm not saying they will put him or any other QB on the PS, just Shanny likes to carry only two QBs. Rex and Colt could be gone before the season starts simply because quarterbacks that have good potential to be a starter and have NFL snaps under their belts will become available around week two or three of the pre-season

The question was, "how do you develop your future starter (if you keep only 2 on the active roster). Your response was "PS" My response was (sic) "you don't put your future starter on the PS".

I'm fine with putting Colt on the PS.

There's more to this story in my opinion. There's something Shannahan's saw in this kid to not go after a QB in the draft. I know we tried to get Bradford, but after he was gone, you didn't see us trading draft picks to pick someone else up...even in the late rounds. I truely think this guy is going to get a shot this year because he's going to win the #2.

Now the question is do you think the #2 will be deturmined in the preseason games...and the answer is that yes, it will be. Along with the offseason, film sessions, weight room, dining hall etc. These coaches seem like they want "all in" players. Players that will buy in to the entire program.

Shanny hasn't really took the time to develop future starters, he had Jay Cutler start 5 games as a rookie after Plummer got hurt in 2006, P. Ramsey was Cutler's back up the next two years. Before Cutler was drafted Bradlee Van Pelt, and Steve Beuerlein backed up Plummer for one year each, Jarious Jackson was the no. 3 for a few years.

Gus Frerotte was Brian Griese's backup until Plummer came along. Like Cutler, Griese was the starter after his rookie season.

Maybe Mcnabb can teach Colt a few of his tricks? Rex is an ok backup but we still have to see what Colt can do. If Colt can work hard he can succeed. My hopes are Brennan works hard and eventually becomes the starter.

My point is, if Shanahan thinks he has his future starter on his team right now, he IS NOT going to put him on the practice squad... because you don't gamble that another team won't steal your future starter.

If Colt goes to the PS, we will pretty much know what Shanahan thinks of his potential.

I'm fairly sure that Mike & Kyle do not think Rex or Colt are anything more than just solid QBs - Rex is a known product to Kyle and Colt will get a chance but neither of them IMO have a lot of potential and are certainly not looked at as being potential starting QBs
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Speaking of a known product to Kyle, I wouldn't be surprised if a guy we all know becomes the #2 here. He was a #3 in Washington for a while. But I still think Sage is a odd name for a QB.

me too!

I know that in the very near term and maybe as late as by the end of the next draft - this team will be bringing in someone as a QB that will give this franchise a potential starting QB - that QB is not here yet
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
