Why is Shanahan so popular?

He's popular because nobody "falls into a couple of back to back Superbowls" ... Elway had gone a decade under Dan Reeves and didn't win a title.

Shanahan's offenses stick to their philosophy and his teams are consistently in the Top 5 of the NFL on offense. He's gone to the playoffs multiple times, and is a disciplinarian.

I'm not sure why he wouldn't be popular in a town like D.C. coming fresh off of Jim Zorn, Bingo-Sherm, and Cerratto.

I can understand why he is popular -- he is a proven winner. But I cannot understand why some many people keep saying things like "I trust Allen/Shanahan" on this or that decision. On individual decisions these guys are going to make their share of mistakes.

These guys might manage to turn the ship around. They might not. Everyone trusted Gibbs (and sure we got back to the playoffs a couple of times), but the end result of Gibbs II still fell short of everyone's expectations.

Allen and Shanahan need to have a chance to set their own tone and do things their way. They have had enough success to be presumed competent until they prove themselves otherwise. I will take a "wait and see" and "always cheer for my team" attitude, but I do not trust every decision they make, and I will still scratch my head when they do something that makes no sense.

Personally, I don't like the guy. I think he fell into a couple of back to back SB wins when the league was pretty weak (the 90s). Teams were still adjusting to free agency. How else do you think Dallas won 3 super bowls in the 90s? Getting back to my point....the guy was freakin fired from Denver. His playoff record (to my recollection) during the past decade is just as good as the Skins has been (might be slightly better...).

His personnel decisions for the most part have pretty much stunk. Elvis Dummervil is probably the only feather in his cap for at least the past decade. Remember when the entire Brocos d-line was Cleveland castaways?

Now, I still think he is 5 times better than jim zorn. That guy was in way over his spacey little head; however, Shanahan I think is a step that is neither foward nor backwards, just another stopgap into mediocrity. When is the midget gonna learn that you can't keep bringing back retreads? (this has absolutely nothing to do with Joe Gibbs, that man actually took our sorry ass roster to the playoffs twice, his only three mistakes were trading for Brunell when we could have signed Brees, drafting Candle, and listening to all the haters and bringing in Saunders after we went on a 5 game tear to end the season...)

Any thoughts or feelings on the above?

FlyinO out!

Some of the negative things you say about Shanahan are true, but he is the perfect medicine for what ails the Redskins right now. After years of lacksadaisical/spend crazy management with players feeling entitled to special treatment and huge contracts, the Skins needed to remove Snyder and Cerrato from the picture, bring in a real NFL GM and a coach that would command respect. Shanahan and Allen are exactly what the doctor ordered.

Does this mean they will make all the right moves and win a Super Bowl next season? NOt likely. But you can say that about almost every NFL team. What Skins fans need right now is a return to respectability. A franchise that is run like a tight ship. So far, with the exception of Haynesworth, the problem child/contract inherited from the old management, I would say the team has improved greatly in attitude and respectability. Fans in the know see it too.

definitely feel like the poor records of the Chiefs and Raiders in Shanahan's division partly had to do with Shanahan being in their division. Early 90's or any other decade, excellent teams make teams in their division obselete like the Patriots have

I agree, he is indeed an improvement; however I have reservations about him being the right man for the Skins. The switch to the 3-4 seems ill timed and rushed. I don't feel that the drafting of the high risk/ high reward prospect (Williams) over the can't miss prospect (Okung) is prudent given the fact that our O-line is in complete shambles. Granted, the draft is always a crapshoot, but we need players on the line now, not later, and can't risk missing on the top 4 pick overall.

As far as Allen, his history in Tampa Bay speaks for itself. He is a bottom tier GM in the NFL. Fired from Tampa...TAMPA. I just don't feel too excited about the changes made this past offseason. Maybe that will change...hopefully.

I was more excited when Zorn was hired than Shanahan, mostly due to the fact that Zorn was a wildcard, an unknown. At 6-2 I thought he was the man...8 games later...it was "off with his head". Shows ya how much I know.

To understand the reason Shannahan AND Allen are so popular, you have to look at where we were as a fan base. We were about to walk from a team that had provided so many great memories and so much happiness over so many years. We were on the brink of walking (many did), because of an owner who was set in his ways and was driving a team into the ground with poor decisions, poor treatment of fans and employees. A fan base that is often called EXTREMELY loyal was on the brink of collapse. We hoped that Snyder admitted that he was not a good owner. We wanted him to admit that he had failed over ten years, and that his vision with Cerrato had failed. And the likeliness of this to happen was non-existant, but we still held out hope.

And to EVERYONE's suprise...he did.

That's what they represent, the last great hope, and I for one (and it seems like the team) am staying positive no matter what. Because this IS the last hope.
Miss you 21

I just don't see why a coach-who hasn't coached a game as a Redskin yet-- would be unpopular anyway?

Popularity will be determined by wins and losses, but you don't start off unpopular. That is, unless you call the team "the marroon, yellow and black" at your introductory presser.

I like shanahan and I think like many have said, he and Allen bring professionalism to the coaching and GM spots here in washington. We haven't had that in a long time aside from Gibbs. Gibbs turned this franchise around btw, he just didn't have the time/will to finish the job. But, I'm mostly excited about Kyle Shanahan. He's one of the best offensive minds in this league. We have a shot at a great defense. With Kyle, within a year or two we can have a great offense to go with it...

The switch to the 3-4 will benefit many players. Event he players themselves seem to welcome it. Furthermore, without coming right out and maiking a public announcement to all their competitors, I think Haslett intends to mix things up between 4-3 and 3-4 sets this year. So I don't think it is "rushed".

Trent Williams was really a no brainer pick. Most analysts had him graded almost equally with Okung AND he fits the system better. This talk of high risk, high reward is overblown. He is a solid tackle now. The only real risk is that he didn't switch from RT to LT until this past season. Big deal.

IF you have two players both graded as top 6 picks and one fits your system better, you draft the one that fits your system better, EVERY TIME.

As for being fired from Tampa, didn't Allen manage the Raiders when they went to the Superbowl last? Didn't he leave shortly thereafter? How have the Raiders done since his departure? It could be that Allen is sub-par, but I plan on giving him some benfit of doubt for a seaosn or two to see how he does. It is nice having someone at Redskins park with the job title, General MAnager.

Here is but one small thing that shows there is a new mindset in Washington.
