The Redskins have opted not to pursue one aging receiver whose best days are fading deep into the rear-view mirror. His name is Terrell Owens.
But they have signed another. His name is Joey Galloway.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Redskins have reached an agreement with Galloway, 37, who finished the 2009 season with the Steelers after being cut by the Patriots.
For Galloway and G.M. Bruce Allen, it's a reunion. They both worked for the Bucs from 2004 through 2008.
Galloway entered the league in 1995 as a first-round pick of the Seahawks. Following an ugly holdout in 1999, he was traded to the Cowboys for two first-round draft picks. After four years in Dallas, he signed with the Bucs.

We just drafted a ton of rookies and UDFA's.... We sign one older player and all that is out of the window? Let's get a grip here sir.
I don't care either way about the move. The younger guys will play if they prove to be better. They'll learn from him and he'll be a crafty WR deep on the chart in spread formations. He's sure handed and runs his routes great. He knows the system and won't be a problem.
No harm, no foul. 1 year deal, clearly he isn't signed to be our #1 WR for the next decade.

we are a 4-12 team and we need to have a lot of options at a lot of positions - we are trying to put as competitive a product on the field as possible and while we want to give the younger guys all the time we can I am sure that they will also benefit from having good older players to help them
this move cannot hurt - we are a long way from having to get down to the final roster and if Galloway makes it, it will be because he offers something more to the team
this move should be welcomed by the other WRs - there are no gurantees here at any position AND this does not necessarily mean that Galloway is a part of the final roster
more and more it is becaoming clear that the players that work hardest at studying and ensuring they listen and learn all the time are the most likely to be a part of your franchise - players that think their football talent will ensure their position are being replaced by players with less talent that work harder to be a part of the team AND not just another talented NFL player

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Frank,
How does he know the system. I missed when he played for the Texans and Broncos. I know Kyle Shanahan was in Tampa for a while with Joey, but at that time Kyle was a glorrified gopher (Offensive Quality Control) and not even a coach let alone a coordintor.
I deffinately think this is a favor signing and he has about as much chance of making the team as the Caps do of winning the Stanley cup this year.

You gotta understand what the coach is doing here!
He's bringing in DESPERATE PLAYERS!! Guys that are willing to give 120% effort because they NEED to make a team. It's going to force the younger guys to study harder, apply themselves harder because they might get outworked by these vets.
It's a plan to motivate and get the most out of the guys who he truly wants to make the roster and reach their potential.
It's brilliant.

agreed - I remember when we got Thomas and Kelly and they did not come to camp ready or prepared to do whatever it takes to make the cut - I understand that you're not getting rid of your top 2 picks AND this is not exactly the same .... BUT, we do have a number of players here that are competing for their jobs and their NFL careers - they can only help in my opinion - IF the younger guys don't win the job, then they most likely are not going to be helping this 4-12 franchise

there are no free rides at Redskins Park while the new guys are in charge

Good signing,
No idea if he'll help or if he'll even make the team, but we clearly do need help at WR and if Joey G doesn't have anything left in the tank we cut him. Now's the time to try him out.

I don't see why anybody would have a problem with a signing like this. Galloway can come in and compete. He's either good enough to make the team and help us out, or he doesn't make it.
The only thing that struck me about them bringing in these WRs is just the seeming lack of confidence and enthusiasm about the existing WR group from the coaches. Am I wrong about that or maybe reading too much into it?

I think you hit it right on the head bro. Thomas showed he has some skills, the jury is still out on Kelly and Marko just needs some dag gone chances.

First thing's first - I was somewhat suprized by the Galloway signing at first, but after thinking about it. I'm wondering if they have brought him
in to assist in teaching moves and route running, or maybe to use him
not only as a teacher. But; if he does make the team it definately makes some coverage issues for opposing defences between him and Moss. It gives the younger WR's a chance to step up and away.
Everyone at all positions that doesn't have a large contract is on notice,
get with the program or get off the bus. It's going to be an interesting three to four month's seeing how this all plays out. I looked at the ages
of all the players we now have on the team and wow we have some youth
out there. I'm thinking that Allen and Shan the Man have brought some of the older Vet's to assist the coaches in raising the bar and also helping the youth come up the learning curve quicker.
I really don't believe they (Allen and Shan) have told all the Vet's what their doing or what their plans are. Remember the Pat's cut Galloway half
way through the season. Doesn't mean thats whats planned but; who knows what at this point.

It's very simple.
Mike brought him here to...
1. Serve as an example to the younger players.
2. To provide competition. Competition forces EVERYONE to step up their game.
3. To legitimately earn a spot. If he earns it, fine, he deserves it.
The guy can play still in a supporting role. Just like McCardell who was decent while he was here. It's a 1 year contract, don't get ur panties bunched up fellas.
