Fred Smoot has a dream of Waffle Houses in Washington D.C.
Fred Smoot(notes) may have been cut by the Washington Redskins, but that doesn't mean he's done making a difference in the nation's capital. The (twice) former 'Skins cornerback said he wants to keep his roots in the city by opening up D.C.'s first ever Waffle House.
The free agent appeared on a radio show over the weekend and discussed his feelings toward his former NFL home. Dan Steinberg of the D.C. Sports Bog transcribed:
"The thing about it is, D.C. loves me as much as much as I love D.C.," Smoot said. "I'm always gonna be a part of D.C. I'm actually in the process of starting a couple businesses up here. I'm bringing Waffle House to D.C. -- I think they've been yearning for it for a long time. My first location is right off 14th and U, so I'm gonna always be back and forth here, and D.C. know I love them."
As a D.C. resident, I'm fully on board with Smoot's visionary plan. Not since Pierre L'Enfant has a man so boldly set out to change the destiny of this fair city. Like grits, sundresses and college football, Waffle House is something that can help bridge the divide behind south and north.
There's not much more to add to this other than to answer your obvious question: No, 14th and U is nowhere near a body of water.
Freddy - please open one up in Arlington, I miss that place at 3am!

There isn't one, currently, but, back in the day, before the revitalization of the Columbia Heights area, I clearly remember there being a "Waffle House" near the corner of 14th St. NW and Park Rd. NW. (Not sure if it was part of the popular chain we all "know and love" today.
It was old, run down, and I always thought it look unhygienic.

Of course, I miss the old landmark, amidst the Target and new stores down there.
So, in my mind, Smoot's idea is only a'ight. I feel kinda "been there, done that" with "Waffle House" in DC.
Plus, I'd prefer a Silver Diner in DC...if it's not there already. I eat there religiously!!!
