Cowboy gets 30 days in the slammer

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

Cowboy gets 30 days in the slammer

Post by Jake »

Carson pleads guilty, will serve 30 days

Tuesday, June 15, 2004

Associated Press

MOBILE, Ala. -- Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Leonardo Carson, who had faced charges of kidnapping and burglary involving a break-in at the home of his ex-girlfriend's sister, pleaded guilty to lesser charges and began serving a 30-day jail sentence.

Carson, a former Auburn star defensive lineman who signed with the Cowboys last year, was taken to the Mobile County Metro Jail on Monday after pleading guilty to trespassing and unlawful imprisonment.

Carson, 27, entered the plea under an agreement with Baldwin County District Attorney David Whetstone.

Circuit Judge Joseph Johnston sentenced Carson to a year each for the misdemeanor offenses, to be served consecutively, but suspended the sentences and ordered him to serve 30 days. Carson also was sentenced to two years of probation.

Carson also has played for the San Diego Charges, who made him a fourth-round draft pick out of Auburn in 2000. He was cut by the Charges last year before being picked up by Dallas.

According to court records, Carson broke into the home of Tasha Locke, apparently looking for his 8-year-old daughter.

Locke is the sister of Carson's ex-girlfriend, Lashea Locke, the mother of his daughter.

Carson broke a window to get in Tasha Locke's apartment and forced her to leave with him, according to police reports.

She escaped when his car broke down a short distance away, records show.

Carson's arrest record includes menacing, harassing, assault and criminal mischief.

Defense attorney Johnny Brutkiewicz said his client's admission of guilt to the two misdemeanors was the right thing and would in turn allow him to continue to financially provide for his daughter and family.

Whetstone told Johnston he didn't want the case to end Carson's football career. But the DA told the court the suspended sentence will be held over the athlete's head as an incentive for him to avoid trouble.

Carson will "serve a lengthy incarceration if he fouls up. I told him I had the hammer and I will use it. I think he understood that," Whetstone said later.

Whetstone said he insisted Carson do jail time. "He gets angry and then becomes a bully. He has a problem with (anger) management," Whetstone said.

"Carson needed time to reflect'' on his actions and do so in "an incarcerated environment where he is not a star (but) is an inmate," the DA added.

This guy is gonna be a beast for US, DCF you just watch. He had 20 tackles and 1.5 sacks with us in only 8 games with us last year. I have heard that he has really gotten into the condition program this year too.

I know he will! He will definitely benefit from Wiley. I was just giving Jake a hard time for trying to make the Cowboys look like they are always in trouble!

I don't think Jake had to make them look that way at all.... they kinda do that for themselves ;)

Ummm I dont think Carson was trying to hide anything, IMO he is a loving father that was paying child support and being denied access and the violation of his parental visiting rights to his daughter, so he went alittle off the deep end.

Your right carson wasn't trying to hide it... but DCF was by calling out Jake for posting it... Catch my drift? :)

Wow Gambit... that was the most PC answer I have ever heard regarding a "kidnapping". He breaks a window and forces the sister of his daughters' mother (<--- I think that makes sense) and to leave with him. He was obviously mentally unstable enough to scare her off.

So why are you defending it? He's a friggin luntaic! And don't think I'm being biased. I'm human and if it was a Redskin doing the same thing, I'd think he was a nut, too.

i hate to say this jake, but if someone took my son and i had no idea where he was, i'd probably go a bit nuts myself, and do whatever was necessary to get him back. if that makes me a friggin lunatic, then i guess that's what i am. and so would many other parents, i would imagine.

dammit, i hate agreeing with gambit. i feel so.....dirty. ug.

Joe, that's no reason to break into the house. What's so wrong with that woman taking care of his daughter? It's not like she's in harms way. If don't think you would break anything when going to your sister in laws house.

It's not like it was a random person taking his daughter. That would be when I go nuts but not with relatives.

I trust my realatives as far as I can throw them. If I had kids and they were taking care of them I'd walk in there with a grenade in hand.

the way i understood the situation, carson didn't know where his daughter was, and broke into her sister's house looking for her. i didn't get the impression that that her sister was taking care of the kid, or that he was upset by that (i'm also assuming that he looked at the mother's house etc.).

i'm not saying that what the guy did wasn't wrong, but i guess what i'm saying is that i wouldn't automatically put him in teh same class as michael irvin and scum like that.

finally, your idea of relatives may be on the other side of the spectrum of what others would refer to as relatives. i say thsi without knowing a thing about your family, but i can guess from the quality of content of your posts that you have a fairly supportive set of relatives. carson may not trust the mother of his daughter farther than he can throw her-er, maybe that's not a good analogy, but you get the point.

it seems like what i'm saying is that i think it's a much different situation than, say, getting caught with crack and a couple of prostitutes.

What I think is stupid about this whole thing is that his car breaks down before he can get his daughter back.

Well it was stupid of him Jake, I am not defending but I am kinda speaking from experience. I have a daughter out of wedlock and i pay 500 dollars a month in child support, I also have a court order for visitation for every weekend. Every blue moon my daughters mothers acts like an butthead and sometimes do not let me see her. Well all the cops can do is file a stupid report and i have to drag her back into court...where the judicial system in D.C. constantly show her lienancy. She even did not let her go to Disney land this past christmas even though she was ordered to by the courts.

So I had to do the right thing and get me an a-hole, high powered attorney, but some people are not as patient as I am.

The morale of the story always wear a rubber, even if she tells you she is on the PILL. LOL

Yea man. And still pull out to be on the safe side.

I know how it can be with children. I don't have any of my own, but watching my brother deal with his daughters mother more than forewarned me.

Father's rights are way down on the priority list in the US. Mostly due to the percieved number of deadbeat dads out there. It's a damn shame too, there are a lot of good fathers out there who don't get to see their kids enough because some other shmoe screwed up.

It's true, Jake. When you have kids, and you're divorced....there's nothing scarier than a woman who wants your kids to call another man "Daddy". The stuff that runs through your head...You look at your kids and you see yourself, and a little of somerelative of yours, and the thought of losing the kid or being kept from the kid...Oh, man.
I've seen some highly rational people do some incredibly stupid things.
I think you need a different perspective before you can judge on this one, bud.
You need to be a divorced Dad with an ex-wife who has the law on her side in every state of the Union but Utah.

I personally think that the laws out there protect the woman to much. I think that they put the laws there just because the woman carries the baby for nine months. While thats great and all it does not give her the right to keep the kids away from there daddy.

the guy is upset because he can't find his daughter, so he does something stupid, and now he's a criminal and a thug?!? if we applied that label to every parent who did something stupid over concern for their kids, then most people would criminals and thugs. i, for one, would most certainly be on america's most wanted.
