Three-way trade sends Tony Scheffler to Detroit, Ernie Sims

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

Three-way trade sends Tony Scheffler to Detroit, Ernie Sims

Three-way trade sends Tony Scheffler to Detroit, Ernie Sims to Philly

An offseason full of big-name trades has added another significant deal to the mix.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports on a three-way trade between the Eagles, Broncos, and Lions. Linebacker Ernie Sims will land in Philadelphia, while tight end Tony Scheffler goes to the Lions.

PFT's Mike Florio reports that the Broncos will get a fifth-round pick from the Eagles. Denver will send a seventh-round pick to the Lions.

It's not a great deal for the Broncos, who wanted a third-round pick for their promising young tight end. Instead, they essentially dumped Scheffler to move up two rounds on the draft's third day.

The move also shows how down the Lions were on Sims' long-term prospects.

1. The Lions were really down on Ernie Sims. The Florida State product once looked like a future Pro Bowler, but he struggled with injuries last year. There is concern he will never hold up in run support, and his play began to decline in 2008. They weren't going to give him a long-term deal.

2. The Eagles have a lot of questions at linebacker and not much depth, as we pointed out in our team needs recap. Adding Sims for a fifth-round pick was a low-risk move and fits what the Eagles do.

3. The Lions may have some concerns about tight end Brandon Pettigrew's recovery from ACL surgery. More likely, the Lions were intrigued by Scheffler's ability to take over games and create mismatch problems.

The Broncos didn't love Scheffler's work habits, but he now gives Matthew Stafford another weapon on an offense that needs them. Scheffler and Pettigrew may be the most intriguing young tight end combination in the league.

4. Denver did fine in the Brandon Marshall. Not so much here.

5. The Bengals must not have wanted Scheffler, because they had two fourth-round picks.

6. Denver's first three picks from their famed '06 draft class are all ex-Broncos. (Jay Cutler, Scheffler, Brandon Marshall.) Elvis Dumervil: watch your back.

I'm not sure what they're doing up there but they gave up Marshall and Scheffler?? :hmm:

Wow, that young coach better know what he's doing because both of them were studs.. I guess its just a continuation from last year since he benched the both of them for that last game.

Wow. What a draft!!!

I hope Shanahan and allen can pull something close to that next year, since we really don't have mant picks left this year.

Just for the record, the only pick that I'm upset about not having is our 6th rounder.

Here is a run down of what picks we have left and what the ones we don't were used for:

1st
2nd (a top flight PB QB - yes older, but proven)
3rd (Jeremy Jarmin - how many rookies can say they already have NFL experience?)
4th
5th
6th *wasted on Jason Taylor**
7th

So out of our seven picks, we no longer have our 6th rounder, we just have already selected our 2nd and 3rd rounders!

I hope when the review the winners and losers of the draft they include Jarmin and McNabb in our draft.

If we switch to a 3-4 does Jarman even have a position? He's too small to be a 3-4 DE and it seems that Carter and Orakpo would be the outside lb's in a 3-4. Considering the defense that we're going to be running, that pick isn't looking so great right now.

He was listed at 277# last year & is very young. He should be able to add 10-15# without slowing him down. He played some DT in college. I see no reason why he can't play 3-4 DE.

If the Coaching staff wants Jarmon to beef up, his frame can handle it easily... he's probably not done growing anyway... I can see him at 290-295 with no problem.

Who cares what "they" say? Proof will be on the field.
