Campbell's fate tied to Clausen

Campbell's fate tied to Clausen

Jimmy Clausen's pro day last Friday might have settled questions about whether he's a top-10 prospect.

Clausen threw well enough to be a top-10 pick, but figuring out where he'll go means figuring out how much appeal Redskins QB Jason Campbell has on the trade market.

Campbell went from being the Redskins' starter to a draft-day trade candidate when the Redskins acquired Donovan McNabb. To help the trade process, Campbell signed his one-year restricted free-agent tender on Monday to help make a trade happen.

Campbell has two main hopes -- Oakland or Buffalo -- although he'd prefer if something could be done to get him to Carolina. Unfortunately for him, the Panthers don't appear to be interested. From the Redskins' standpoint, coach Mike Shanahan met with Campbell and was honest. Shanahan told Campbell he would try to accommodate him in a trade that benefits both parties. He gave Campbell the ability to shop around, too.

The timing of the McNabb deal held back any quick solution for Campbell. You can see how this is going to go. Campbell will watch the Clausen situation closely. If the Bills take Clausen at No. 9, Campbell will likely have to wait until Saturday, April 24, with hopes that the Redskins deal him to the Raiders as part of a draft-day trade.

The Bills, meanwhile, could factor Campbell's availability into what they do at quarterback. The cost of Campbell won't be more than a lower-round pick, a bargain for a starting quarterback. That could give the Bills the luxury of taking a Colt McCoy or a Tim Tebow and still getting Campbell as a starting quarterback to buy time for their future QB's development.

Still, odds favor Campbell ending up in Oakland, where he could work with new offensive coordinator Hue Jackson.

From the inbox
Q: This may be a long shot, but what are the chances of the Pittsburgh Steelers making a play to get Jason Campbell? I personally think that Campbell is much better than given credit for and if he found himself in a situation with stability, he'd be pretty good. With the Big Ben situation, I would think the Steelers could use a better option than Charlie Batch or Dennis Dixon, and Campbell could be that option.

Patrick in Larmore, Colo.

A: The Steelers got a big break when criminal charges were not pressed against Roethlisberger for sexual assault. With Batch back in the mix and Dixon developing, the Steelers aren't in the market for a quarterback, but they must make sure Roethlisberger's head is right. They need to sit him down and discuss where he is going with his life. He's had a great career and that career should only get better, but he's going to blow it if he doesn't improve his life off the field. This should have been a scare for Roethlisberger and the Steelers, but now both sides can concentrate on football.

Please let Jason Campbell go to Buffalo. My friend is a Bills fan and this would make my season. [-o<

Just wondering what people's thoughts are now on JC... last year, a lot of people said he acted with class and integrity, etc. This year, we pull the trigger on a trade to get McNabb, and now JC, even though he was granted the option to seek a trade, is not attending voluntary workouts... there is no guarantee that he gets traded, may be cut, but Shanny had said before he was open to keeping him... but do people not think he should be attending the voluntary workouts, and learning a few things from McNabb??? I mean, attending these workouts and working with McNabb and others would ONLY help JC... I am not saying that JC is a locker room distraction, or an annoyance to the team, but I just believe he should be at the workouts... that is my thoughts, just wondering if all those last year who thought he had such class and integrity, still believe that...

Campbell is not a distraction for not attending workouts. If the team told him they intend him to be part of the team, he would be there, no doubt about it. But the fact is, Grossman knows the offensive system and McNabb is the starter. Shanahan has most likely told him he will be traded one way or the other. If Campbell did attend the workouts, it might be a bigger distraction, since McNabb would be there and everyone would be talking to JC17 about his trade talks.

I think he lacks the instincts to be a top notch starter, but he could end up with a team where he could become a top 10 QB in the league and that isn't too shabby. JC17 is a class act and I wish him well.

I don't see why Pitt would take him, they got that young kid who came in and played pretty darn good. Logically it should be buffalo but i really don't want him to go to Oakland.. his career will seriously be destroyed playin for Al

Campbell has been nothing short of a class act. Do hope he does well where ever he ends up.

Looks like he MIGHT end up with the Panthers for a 3rd rounder , I hope it happens.

Where are you hearing this? Personally, I would love that fit for him and Carolina. Strong running game and a similar (better) WR in Steve Smith.

No matter where JC goes, he has my respect. He has handled himself very well over the years and he deserves a fair shot on another teams roster.

I'm not a Campbell fan but I wish him well - I just hope we can get a trade worked out for him and that he ends up somewhere that suits both he and the offensive unit he's going to - I just don't think that he's going to be a good QB and I'm sure he will not get a decent chance here

all the best Jason
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

With Claussen and McCoy still on the board, JC's value will drop. Cleveland, Oakland, and Buffalo all pick before Carolina so the deal might still work out.

I really wouldn't be surprised if Allen and Shanny get into the second round and get one of them to sit behind McNabb for a few years

I have a feeling that Jason, AH, and Rocky will all be on the roster this year.

With our lack of draft picks and lightweight consideration of players value, that bodes well for me.

I would be fine with AH and Rocky being here. I would like Campbell to be traded so that he has a chance somewhere else to try again rather than holding a clipboard here.

Buffalo really wants and needs a top QB in this draft. There will be a handful of teams trying to get to the top of round 2 for Clausen and McCoy. If Buffalo isn't one of those two teams, I expect a trade for Campbell. There's Oakland too. Although the Campbell trade might not happen until tomorrow.
The Ah trade, if it happens will most likely be tonight, unless a team offers next years draft picks during rounds 4-7 tomorrow.
Build through the draft!
