Redskins sign nose tackle Anthony Bryant
Free agent nose tackle Anthony Bryant has signed with the Redskins, the team announced Monday. Terms of the deal were not released.
In three seasons in the NFL, Bryant, 28, has appeared in nine games, including three starts. He has been credited with 11 tackles, including five unassisted.
Listed at 6-foot-3, 335 pounds, Bryant, a sixth-round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2005, spent the first six games of the 2009 season on the New York Giants' practice squad before being moved to injured reserve in October. Bryant, who was out of football during the 2008 season, joined the Giants as a free agent during the 2009 offseason.

Do we really need to put "athleticism" as a pre req. for NT's we bring in? We need someone that can stand their ground and be a wall. Let the edges rush or everyone else rush the NT holds the line. We have guys like Fat Al, Carter and Rak, then 2nd wave of Fletch, RockyMac... Between Fat Al, Cater, Rak.. Someone should bust loose if the NT can occupy 2 lineman at the snap. I think all we need at NT is a warm body for now. See how it pans out, then start looking for an upgrade. We might not need a super NT, we might need a interior LB that can cover. I guess wht I'm saying is that this guy will be just fine, for now... I wanna see how this new 3/4 looks with what we have before adding another stud.

Phillip Daniels said the skins wants him at 320 this year and he's deadlifting 600. Is that big enough to rotate at NT?
...any given Sunday....

Athleticism is in the context of a 350# guy. If all you have at NT is a warm body, then offenses won't need to block him with two linemen.

So the other teams who don't have a stud NT just get by with an ordinary space occupir then? Mabe warm body is a bit much, someone average is what I should've said. =)

No worries. I have heard several other people sort of dismiss the NT as less than important because of the perception that they are just big guys who take up space. It really depends on what type of 3-4 you run, but the traditional 3-4 revolves around the NT. It may be the most important single position to solidify. The idea is that the NT is so strong and such a good tackler that he can cover both gaps on either side of the Center. This means that even though the Center intends to block him to the left (for example) that it will require help from the guard to keep him from STILL making the tackle on the right side gap. Think about that for a second. It is pretty amazing and the key to 3-4 success. While those two lineman are working on him, someone else is free. Add to that the offense is usually short one man (QB doesn't block) it gives the run defense a distinct advantage. Of course, if your NT is just average, maybe that guard goes and blocks someone else instead.

yea i remember playing guard vs. the 3-4 against weak Nosetackles. It usually resulted in the center holding up in one-on-one and me wrecking a linebacker. We had best do well with the NT or else London is gonna have Chris Snee and Leonard Davis in his grill all day.
