Joey Porter
were looking at 3-4 defense team next year . now we know we haven't got the most natural players to play as olb in this formation .
here is some-one who has been proven to be very disruptive off the edge , despite his advancing years he is still performing at a very high .
he's dying to be away from Miami , would you have him in washington , i see him as a match but as an oversea's follower i don't know if finacially it is possible .

Former Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter, who visited the Cardinals last week, is scheduled to visit the Washington Redskins on Thursday.

The Miami Dolphins literally could not wait to release Porter, and when they did, Porter had already chosen a list of teams for which he'd consider playing.
On that list, there were three teams. Unfortunately for Joey, that number did not match the list of teams who were actually willing to employ him. That list, to this point, contains zero teams.
That's got to be a tough pill for Porter to swallow, because I don't think there have been too many guys in NFL history that have had a higher opinion of themselves than Joey Porter.

Sounds like we'd need a bigger changing room to accomodate his ego. Good job TO isnt coming ....

We are missing an iLB. What's more, Porter won't help. We need a Dansby or a Foote and there's little chance now of getting one.
The potential signing of Porter was never stated to be the solution to ILB. As far as ILB, Rocky has proven before that he's capable of handling those duties. There's also the draft where good LB's in the 2nd round.
There's entirely too much time and possible solutions to get a cramp over anything as of yet.

Rocky has never proven he can be an inside LB and I don't want a LB in the second round. We are missing two OT's, remember. Still, I don't mind picking up Porter, inspite of the fact he's less than inspiring against the run. It's not my money.

Bruce Allen said on the John Thompson show that if the Skins were hypothetically to move to the 3-4 that Rocky would play inside. Go to Espn980.com/audiovault
I think the more important question is who starts at Defensive End on opposite Daniels - assuming that A Carter is either the odd man out, or playing OLB with Porter?

I was hoping for Andra Davis after we didn't get Dansby, didn't really want Foote but wouldn't have been upset if he had signed. Porter may visit but I don't see a need for him. They have DEs they want to move to OLB and guys that don't want to move. Why add more bodies at a position that is well manned with so many other spots that need filling. Looks like it'll be a RFA that has to come in or a draft pick that they can't afford to spend.
With Davis signing with the Bills, DeMeco Ryans and Barrett Ruud are the new additions to my "wish list". D'Qwell Jackson and Kirk Morrison would be nice fits. They wouldn't cost as much as Ryans and Ruud but they would come with a price as well.

brad7686 wrote:well yea, porter certainly has succeeded in that role. I just personally think he is a windbag and not worth the money at this point in his career.
I also think Carter will be better than people think. But we also have Wilson as far as rotating guys goes.
Who knows if Carter is even going to be here though. The Skins beat reporter for 106.7 was saying this morning that he spoke with Carter and that he is unhappy about moving to linebacker.

On second thought, congrats to the Redskins for not paying Porter. He got 17.5 million over 3 years from the Cards. His contract could max out at 24 million.

Haynesworth starts as DE in the 3-4 with Kemo at NT and Daniels at the other end. The only questions are:
Who plays with Haynesworth at DT in the 4-3, and who plays ILB with Fletcher in the 3-4.
Bruce Allen is trying to pull an ILB out of his wazoo. He passed on trying to sign Dansby and then failed to sign Foote and is now trying to fix up his mess by shuffling cards (Jarmon, Alexander). Lame and obvious. Rocky can't play ILB effectively-- too small. I'm glad Allen's dreaming up alternatives though. Hopefully, it means that we won't draft a LB in round two. We need OL there.

Congrats are not in order. We don't need a OLB for the 3-4. I'm tired of you guys heaping praise on Shany and Allen for doing nothing. Their sitting on their hands is going to cost us big time. We've got about ten holes and only five draft picks, and so far S and A have only acquired older and/or below average players who will only marginally help. It looks like we're going to have to hope that we will draft absolutely great players in rounds one and two or drop further behind. Remember, the Cowboys, Eagles, and Giants also have draft picks too, more than we do. They also seem willing, right now, to pay more money for proven talent than we are.

Do us all a favor. Check out the Ravens' roster. Find me an ILB on their roster who weighs more than 240. Ellerbe doesn't. Gooden doesn't. Lewis doesn't. Donnie Edwards played a lot of good years for the Chiefs and Chargers at around 230.
But even if you're talking about bigger ILBs, you're looking at guys like David Harris or Patrick Willis or Jerod Mayo, none of whom are bigger than 245. Which is a whopping 12 pounds over Rocky's playing weight. It'll be up to the coaching staff to figure out whether extra muscle will suit him better (it certainly wasn't necessary for a WLB in a Tampa 2), but the idea that Rocky can't do it, either at his current weight or a higher one, has no basis in reality.

Ray Lewis is 6-1, 250. Gooden weighs 242, but his is 6-1. I've seen both Gooden and Rocky up close and Gooden is far more built. McClain is 6-1, 250. Those guys all weigh more than Rockey despite giving up a few inches. Not saying he can't do it, but he has struggled with injuries before and imho he isn't going to be able to stand up to the beating that a player takes playing MLB in a 3-4.

Fair enough but he's been healthy as of late and has been a machine. He's been consistent and a key cog to the defense. He can do it, he can adapt. Especially with a general like London making sure that everyone is lined up correctly.
The transition according to London wont be anywhere as difficult as people are making it seem. At the end of the day, you're going out there, making read and making secure tackles. We have the meat up front to absorb linemen and Rocky is a great tackler.
I'm not worried, yet.

Agree 100%. Which is why I disagree with the switch to a 3-4. Too many players that did well in our 4-3 last year, namely Carter and Rocky, are going to be asked to change what they've been doing. If we had a bunch of scrubs on D I could understand this decision, but we don't, and I disagree with it.
