Wasn't he cut LAST YEAR for the final straw being the racial slurs?
Here a quick rehash...On November 9, 2009 ESPN wrote:In 2008, then-coach Herm Edwards benched him for three straight games for violating team rules and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended him a fourth game for violating the league's player conduct policy.
Johnson was later sentenced to two years' probation after pleading guilty to two counts of disturbing the peace. One woman accused him of throwing a drink on her and another said he had pushed her head at a Kansas City night spot.
In April 2008, a special master ruled that in pleading guilty to disturbing the peace, Johnson had violated terms of his contract and the Chiefs could release him without having to pay about $3.5 million. In what now must be viewed as a huge mistake, they opted to keep him on the roster.
Getting benched for three games and suspended by the league for one cost him big. Then he lost another $315,000 for the gay slurs and tweeting. Last week, an online fan petition was started asking the Chiefs not to let Johnson become the team's all-time leading rusher.
Haley declined to say if Johnson's low production had any bearing on his release or whether the Chiefs' biggest concern were the slurs and the public criticism of his coach.
"It wouldn't be fair of me to try to comment on that in any way other than to say the totality of the situation was factored in -- what we felt was best for the Kansas City Chiefs," Haley said.
A month earlier ESPN wrote:The tweets were posted to the "Toonicon" account, an online alias the Star reported Johnson has said is his. The account includes a link to Johnson's personal Web site. Chiefs spokesman Bob Moore said the team could not verify that is Johnson's account.
The Twitter remarks were posted after San Diego routed the Chiefs (37-7).
One tweet read: "My father got more creditentials than most of these pro coaches." That was followed by: "My father played for the coach from "rememeber the titans". Our coach played golf. My father played for redskins briefley. Our coach. Nuthn."
Johnson's agent, Peter Schaffer, said, "I talked to Larry about it and he was focusing more on pumping up his father than anything else. He wasn't trying to downgrade anyone ... yes, everyone is frustrated after a loss like this but I wouldn't put too much into it."
The tweets drew responses, including one that referred to a nightclub incident in which Johnson was accused of spitting in someone's face.
Johnson's response included a three-letter gay slur. The final post read: "Make me regret it. Lmao. U don't stop my checks. Lmao. So 'tweet' away."
Johnson's account since has been made private.
Johnson then was sentenced to two years' probation after pleading guilty to two counts of disturbing the peace. One woman accused him of throwing a drink on her and another said he had pushed her head at a Kansas City night spot.
A judge earlier this year suspended the sentence and said he would remove the guilty plea from the public record if Johnson finished the probation period without further incidents.
Today Rick Maese of WaPo wrote:"He will take over the running back position," said Vermeil, who coached Johnson in Kansas City from 2003 to '05. "That's what I think. He'll push that guy right out of a job. Larry Johnson will work all week -- he'll work Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday -- and he'll make you start him on Sundays."
edit:
Here's the Actual twits (or whatever they are called) and comments
Johnson, sitting next to second-year running back Jamaal Charles, told reporters that “I’m not talking till Thursday,” his usual day of speaking with reporters.
In the wake of the Chiefs’ 37-7 loss to the San Diego Chargers on Sunday, Johnson tweeted about Haley’s lack of football-playing experience from a Twitter account that appears to be his.
Then Johnson turned away and whispered.
“Get your f***** ass out of here,” he said.
“My father got more creditentials than most of these pro coaches,” Johnson said. It was followed with, “My father played for the coach from “rememeber the titans”. Our coach played golf. My father played for redskins briefley. Our coach. Nuthn.”
Johnson continued the rant, and, in later responses directed toward Johnsons Twitter followers, contained inflammatory remarks about gays. In a reference to someones profile picture, Johnson called it a “f** pic” and called the person a “Christopher street boy,” a reference to a predominantly homosexual section in New York’s Greenwich Village. Johnson’s Twitter profile was taken private and some posts were deleted.
Not making excuses for this guy but they had just been BEATDOWN 37-7 when the reporter stuck the recorder in LJ's face. It wasn't as bad as Ryan Leaf blowing up after a game, then again Ryan left it in the locker room Larry continued for at least another day (no telling what he wrote once his account was made private
