Mike Williams re-signs with Redskins

The Redskins have reportedly signed an offensive lineman, but it's not Chad Clifton. Or Tony Pashos. Or anyone new, in fact.

The team is expected to announce today the re-signing of Mike Williams, who spent time at both guard and tackle last season for the Redskins, according to a league source. The signing was first reported by Comcast Sportsnet.

Williams, originally a first-round pick in the 2002 NFL Draft by Buffalo, returned to the NFL last season after having not played a game since 2006.

He shed a massive amount of weight to return to playing shape and when other linemen went down with injuries, Williams found himself in the starting rotation for eight games last season. He battled injuries himself, but Redskins coaches must've liked what they saw on film to
bring him back.

Williams was present at Redskins Park Thursday for Chris Samuels' retirement press conference and said at the time that he was confident a deal with the Redskins would be completed quickly.

I'm sure its a cheap contract and he'll be good depth. I think they can coach him up some more and if he can't cut it - he'll get cut.

There is "0" risk here. All you're doing is saying, "Ok, you worked hard for us last year to get back in shape. You've got some experience too. So we want you back to see what you can do." I promise you that he is not being really thrown ANY money. I wouldn't over react on this AT ALL!!!

I agree with you Frank, I like the signing and as you point out it's got to be cheap and the risk is zero

Depth by itself doesn't mean a damn thing. Having good depth means having guys that can actually perform at a decent level. Neither Williams nor Heyer fit that description. Get both of those clowns out of here.

On Williams: "Mike showed a tremendous work ethic and willingness to do whatever the team asked of him, and those are two of the traits we're looking for in Redskins players. We believe that he's only scratched the surface of his abilities so far, and look forward to seeing what he can do after a full offseason in our program."

It's important to note that some of us fan's know a lot more about football then coaches who have won superbowls. We must only have players here right now who are going to start or be pro-bowl backup's. This is unacceptable

Come on. Some of you don't understand that these coaches are basically saying, we're going to give you a chance - Williams & Heyer. Not sure what harm it does.

He'll start at RG next year and be great. he lost 100lbs in less than a year and started 8games in the NFL. how much do you weigh? what have you accomplished in less than a year? he has potential, I wouldn't be suprised if his feet were quick enough next year to play RT. He essentially had 450lbs feet, good enough to be our best RG of the year.

Shanahanallen just got started, there is no tape to watch and here we are hating on it already. I can only hope the Cowboys have to put up with this also

The guy was picked 4th overall for a reason. If they draft Okung, he'll be a LT. If they resign Levi, he has only taken two snaps at RT his whole life.

Imagine 100lbs of fat in a jar sitting in front of you

I never doubted they would want him here, he's younger than any free agent tackle on the market and he is a run blocking monster. He just couldn't handle the spin move on the outside last year and when he went to RG he fit well. besides, the entire O-line is a foot and a half wider than with anyone else in there. can't tell me that's not an advantage

I watched him improve steadily once they moved him inside... up until he got hurt. This is a zero risk move, and if he continues to work and improve, it can offer a big payoff.

I like Williams and he deserves the opportunity. I thought he was solid as a guard. If you remember, we were moving the ball when he was in there. It was the best part of our season.

Agree. He was devastating in lead blocking a few times.

I adamantly disagree...he was a turnstyle at guard for the inside moves and CERTAINLY can't help with the speed rushers on the outside. I don't know who is worse, Heyer or BMW.

I am not sure you made your point clear enough.

Yeah I have to think this is a move more about depth. I surely hope that he comes into the season in shape. He did work hard last season and lost a lot of weight. Maybe this season he can actually progress into a starting quality guard or better? Who knows?

I have to say I did see improvement. Stephon Heyer on the other hand?
