Carlos Rogers says he wants 'a new start' elsewhere
Disgruntled cornerback Carlos Rogers said he has animosity toward the Redskins for many things. High on Rogers's list is how his benching last season was handled.
Philadelphia wide receiver DeSean Jackson beat Rogers on a double-move for a 57-yard touchdown in Washington's Week 7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. And then in a Week 10 victory over the Denver Broncos, Rogers struggled again against a double-move. On the Broncos' first possession, wide receiver Brandon Marshall burned Rogers with a double-move for a 40-yard score.
Redskins coaches instantly benched Rogers for the remainder of the game in favor of fellow veteran corner Fred Smoot. Smoot started the following week in a loss to the Dallas Cowboys, but Rogers regained his position with the first-team and started every game last season except against the Cowboys.
In speaking with a reporter about his situation at the time, Rogers essentially said he had been treated fairly and would hold no grudges. In a phone interview Wednesday night, however, Rogers said he was being less than truthful at the time about his feelings.
"We played 90 percent man [coverage] this season. We were out there in man most of the time," Rogers said. "Okay, so I got beat on some double-moves. I mean, I get beat on some double-moves, when most of the time we're in man, and then I'm benched? What?"
To Rogers's disappointment, the Redskins on Wednesday gave him a first-round tender. The restricted free agent had hoped the Redskins would not offer him a contract, which would have prevented them from blocking his departure.
Rogers said former secondary coach Jerry Gray remained supportive of him when others coaches were not. In fact, Rogers was especially upset about how former head coach Jim Zorn treated him after the benching.
"I got all y'all [reporters] looking at me after he [Zorn] says, 'Am I even gonna dress him?' " Rogers recalled. "He said, 'I'll see how he acts in practice to see if I'm gonnna dress him.' That right there was some of the worst ... I mean, who does that?
"You get benched, and then next week you come back and say you have to see if you're even gonna dress your starter? Not even saying, 'Let's see how he practices and let him work his way in.' Watch me and practice and see if I'm gonna dress?"
Nothing against the new regime, but Rogers said he would prefer to play elsewhere.
"That's why I'm saying, there's just so much stuff that they done done that I just ... you think about you want a new start," Rogers said. "It's not even Coach [Mike] Shanahan's fault. It's not the fault of any of these new coaches. It's just previous things. It's a lot of things."
His attitude hasn't improved whatsoever, which is too bad because he could improve if he would be a little humble and willing to learn.
If this is how he feels, after his dip in performance in 2009, then I hope we get rid of him. Let someone else pay him to drop sure INTs. It's not impossible to find someone that can cover about as well as he can — i.e., above average.
I also have a sneaking suspicion that when all of those reports came out last year about bad attitudes on our defense, Rogers and Landry were the main culprits. I am hoping that neither are in a Redskins uniform as of next year.

It always cracks me up when people say that.
See, I'd have been OK for being benched for SUCKING if they'd only "handled" it better. That's my complaint. Handle it better and I'm perfectly OK with being benched for sucking. But I wasn't appropriately benched in a way I approve of being benched for sucking. So the real issue here is how my sucking was handled by the staff. It's totally their fault.
What a big crying thumb sucking baby he is. Unfortunately that's not new. And his agent should fly to Virginia and whack him on the head and tell him to shut up because he's telling all the future potential employers signing him is signing a man-boy who's going to whine when he sucks and point fingers at them rather then vowing to play better.
Hail to the Redskins!

What can we realistically get for him? I understand noone is going to give a 1st for him, but I wonder if he we could get a 2nd or 3rd for him? He did have a good 2008, maybe ppl will forget him 2009? Wishfull thinking I know but just curious what everyone thinks we could realistically get for him?
Mike/Bruce - If your going to spring big this year in Free Agency, please spring big on offensive lineman! I cant watch Rabach anymore!

Maybe it's possible, but since he's an RFA and doesn't have a good attitude it's not going to be easy to either trade his rights without a contract or sign and trade him. He's pretty much ensuring he'll be here next year or sit at home holding out. The irony...

Man you nailed it. I understand him being bitter about how his contract is playing out in the uncapped year, but that has nothing to do with the Redskins.
We have an entirely new coaching staff and GM this year. So he has literally nothing more to complain about how he was treated by any of the previous staff. He should be a professional, go out there and prove his critics wrong.
His crybaby routine really irritated me. I especially hated his "Lots of other guys feel the same way" garbage. Be a man, Rogers.
I do think that Rogers got scapegoated a little bit last season, but at the same time I think that it's better for him to move on. He has underachieved here and his attitude, like Irn-Bru pointed out, needs improving.

That's what I was thinking. He is highly illogical.
Or he's logical and just a finger pointer who won't accept responsibility for himself? When your issue is failure to accept responsibility for your own poor play and mistakes, does it matter who is fired or who is there? After all, you're consistent in that you're not the problem.

Carlos - all you need to do is find somebody who wants to pay you, and you'll be on your way. For that reason alone, I think you'll be back in DC next season, so shut up and try building bridges.
I agree with most of the sentiment here. Man up Carlos.
I don't agree with getting rid of Rogers and Smoot (from another thread). That leaves a gaping hole at starting CB. Don't we have enough to deal with without creating MORE holes? At this point in time, we cannot rely on Barnes, Westbrook to start at CB.

What a useless piece of propagandist rhetoric that is.

Not when Duante Robinson is on the market.....Barnes to nickle, Robinson and Hall running 1 and 2 CBs....BAM

I'm game as long as there's a plan. Some people, like a coworker I was talking to today, said cut and fix later (talking about CP, not Rogers, but still same mentality).

Exactly. That's why I think what he is really upset about is the uncapped year. He would have been in much better position to be released and get paid a lot more money than the Redskins tender this year.
"We played 90 percent man [coverage] this season. We were out there in man most of the time," Rogers said. "Okay, so I got beat on some double-moves. I mean, I get beat on some double-moves, when most of the time we're in man, and then I'm benched? What?"
Good corners, like the ones you want to be payed like, don't get burnt by double moves. You are not as good as you think you are. I'm sick of this attitude, like he has somehow earned to be looked at as a great CB. Just sign Robinson and cut Carlos.
WOWSERS! He is speaking as if he has plucked a few and taken them to house. When he really should be speaking like someone who still has a suspect knee piece, is a terrible tackler, and a habitual offender of the "double move".
Carlos needs to be thankful that he is still employed...PERIOD.
"It's almost like, you play a kid's game for a king's ransom," he said. "And if you don't take it serious enough, eventually one day you're going to say, 'Oh, I could have done this, I could have done that."
Sean Taylor
This kid's judgement is seriously impaired, and his value is about to tank.
He sounds like Champ... minus the bonafides...

I am hoping Shanahan can help adjust his attitude. After all last season was just horrific. I am not going to bash Rogers too much. I actually feel he has a right to feel some animosity. Whether right or wrong. The whole 4-12 experience was just a mess beyond all messes.
So for me I am willing to see if Shanahan and staff can get through to him. Rogers is a good corner. Our secondary last year played with little discipline. Landry made some mistakes too. So I am giving him a pass and hope he still wants to stick around. If not oh well.

Thanks Canes... Some people are thinking here. As far as I'm concerned Carlos couldn't catch but did a fine job defending passes. As Vet hinted later in the thread CP has a way bigger mouth. At least Carlos waited until now to say anything. Yes, double moves got him last year but if you look at the big picture he's been pretty much a shut down corner for us. Even DG got beat now and then. That's more than I can say for some Redskins last year.
I think Rogers is playing CB here this season and playing it well
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
