In other words, the NFL should consider fining not only the players when dirty hits are applied to quarterbacks, but also their coaches.

Now I'm not a coach so I'm speaking as a football fan, isn't knocking the QB out the game like all defensive player's goals? Lavar had mentioned that was the whole defense's goal when he played.. did the players go away from that because of all the tick-tack rules? (like the Brady rule)

Well... here are one player's thoughts on that...

One thing I forgot to mention, I think Williams is a total buffoon for saying it out loud.. I mean, I hope he realizes that the Colts have a defense too and they may be saying, "you hurt our QB, we're gonna destroy yours".. he could've said "we're gonna try our hardest to put Manning on his back".. that woulda been better I think.. ?

I think its something most players go for. Not career-ending, or broken bone type stuff, but hitting him so hard, he sees little birdies. I agree that you don't want your coach saying so on the radio before the Super Bowl, but you also don't want your defense trying to hit someone hard enough to know them down, but not hard enough to make them feel it.

I think the object of the game should be to be the other team ... not injure one of their players in order to win.

Williams ought to be fined for even talking like that .. advocating hurting another player ... hoping he doesn't "get up".

And it was clear that the Saints employed that type of strategy against Favre, with some of the cheap shots they dished out. Favre played tough, and I was sorry to see the Saints win ... I started out rooting for the Saints, but not anymore.

I'll enjoy watching Payton tear their butts up.

There is no place in professional sports for intentionally trying to hurt a player .... disgusts me. Knock the heck out of them and make them fumble, YES, but not try to injure them.

No, you can't fine them for free speech. He could just be trying to get in Peyton's head. But, if any player takes a cheap shot, they should be ejected from the game as well as fined.

Ray, I totally agree with you. It's one thing when you want to go out play hard hit the QB hard or any player hard but to go out there with the intent to injure someone so you can win is disgraceful. You are messing with someone's lively hood and there is no place for that. I hope Peyton Manning and the Colts have a message after the game remember me and this game because you won't be able to forget it.

The real question is how are the Colts defense going to stop the Saints offense?

You can only hope to contain Manning. The Saints have two good corners and an all pro Saftie in Sharper. The Saints also have good coverage linebackers in Fujita and Vilma. Last time I checked the Saints Defensive line was also pretty good with Will Smith. The Vikings game they got past a pretty good Oline in the Vikings.

Manning is the best player in the game for sure. Brees is close to being as good.

Just think about it.
Who has a better chance of scoring.

Who did the Colts defense face last week? The Jets offense? In which was number one in the running game sure but there starting running back went down due to injury!

This is probable. There are rare quarterbacks who are tailor made to play against aggressive defenses... and Manning is one of them. He has that ability to see the defense, in it's entirety, before the play. He almost always knows where to attack, and how to take advantage of the pass rush.

Williams is correct though... the key is to get into his face, fast, and to emboss your bad intentions on his mind. Peyton Manning plays fast... but Williams wants to make him take short cuts. Even Manning can be rattled. Sure, it's not easy... but it can be done... just not this Sunday. Manning will probably shred Williams defense. This is HIS stage.

The question is, then, "can a weakened Colts d-line keep pace against an also excellent Saints quarterback?" I think this is going to be a high scoring game.

WOW - this Saints defense gave up 475 yards to the Vikings - I think that Manning is a little better than Favre right now ... and Favre had a balanced offense.

in a game ealier this year Miami kept possession of the ball for 45 minutes of the game and scored 23 points - Manning had the ball for 15 minutes and scored 27
Cardinals vrs the Colts = Warner had like 52 attempts and completed 30 I think - the Cardinals lost 31-10 - this is not a really good Colts defense BUT the Colts beat up on the Jets and the Ravens and while some here might not agree, the Saints D is not as good as those 2
the #1 passing offense in the NFL was Houston who had the # 1 WR - Colts won both games

Fact is the Colts are favored to win because of Manning - the Saints could win but only if they get lucky

it does happen - look at what the giants did - they won because the Patriots did not play as well as they had all season long - nobody thinks to this day that the giants were a better team on that night the giants were lucky and that could happen to the saints as well

BUT if the Saints win it will be because they get lucky, not because they are a better offense than the Colts

Man I'm glad I was wrong about this. Being a Purdue fan, I love Drew Brees. Man, that was awesome seeing that pick 6. Congrats to Gulf Region. They deserve it.

the difference was coaching, Dungy would've adjusted to the D. This new coach for the Colts did not change a thing, he let Manning run the O, which he normally does but man the D was throwing stuff at him. The coach should've provided more guidance on what plays to run. Anyhew, WOW. I mean WOW. The Saints D looked good, we had that D and IMO with better talent. I always wanted to see that D complemented by a good offense, and now I know that it was SB caliber. G Williams is a genius DCor.

Sean Payton did a tremendous job. He had his team ready and believing.
Sean Payton had a film session that included all the greatest sports moments in history. He had his team watch it the day before the SuperBowl in a room with the lights off. At the end of the film the lights came on and Bam in the front stood Ronnie Lott. Ronnie Lott has been known to give outstanding speeches to motivate. Basically Ronnie said I loved the game so much I would rather lose my finger then lose a moment of playing the game I love.
He said I cut off my finger but you know what I would cut off most anything to be able to play in the SuperBowl this Sunday. LOL! Great stuff!

great all round game by the Saints players AND coaches

I agree the key was having the guts to call the second half kickoff and the interception was a killer - this was a really good game by both teams - Peyton played well he just didn't get the support or the breaks he gets normally
