Idealy I would like to see Fat Albert and Jarmin/Daniels at DE and Montgomery or someone drafted or FA at NT. Flecth and Rocky (Blades if Rocky leaves via FA) at ILB and Orakpo and Wilson at OLB.
Carter trade explored and executed if at the right value. He has age on him, but is coming off his best year ever and is in tremendous shape. Carter simply doesn't have a possition on the team in a 3-4. He is a 4-3 DE and isn't agile or fluid enough to even think about going back to OLB. He was a bust in SF at OLB and is just a natuaral 4-3 DE
The players we have are best suited for a 4-3 and we SHOULD NOT shift to a 3-4 without some serious changes and one is Carter doesn't have a home on a 3-4 team.
Now maybe if they played a mix of 4-3 and 3-4 they could find a spot for AC, but OLB isn't it.

In case some here may have missed what has happened here - since mid December this franchise has a different group of people in charge so please discard any and all thoughts of what might have, or did happen here the past 10 years - THIS JUST IN - we are heading in a new direction
no matter who did what here last year this franchise's win loss record was 4-12 - nobody that played here last year on either side of the ball should consider their position with this franchise as being safe - we could have 30+ new players here on opening day and it would not surprise me - the Jaguars last year had 40 of the 53 players on their roster who were not with the team the year before
we are in need of a lot of changes and I'm looking forward to it - the Redskins are going to be a better franchise in a few years but we are going to see the effects of better coaching, better game planning and better player acquisitions immediately
H A I L
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

carter is way too small to be a 3-4 end
If this is the way it's going to be, I don't see much help at defensive end.
Daniels? Fat Al DE?
Carter Rocky Fletch Rak
Problem 1-- Daniels will still be on field Problem 2-- We will have a relatively weak DE opposite Daniels Problem 3-- Rak is not a good linebacker and will be misused again
I see this as a big mistake. It destroys the sack capacity of Carter, Fat A, and Rak, which is the core strength of our defensive line, and does little or nothing to help in pass coverage. It also hurts Wilson and Grif. I don't get it. Somebody explain.
DE's could be Haynesworth, Daniels, Golston, maybe Grif. They don't necessarily need to get after the passer, they just need to be quick off the ball and take up space. Golston could be a really good 3-4 end. There is no guarantee Carter won't get sacks standing up, even though he did have a rough time his other go round in a 3-4. He seems to be much better now than in his younger days. Orakpo will rake in a 3-4.
You read my mind, brad. I totally see Montgomery at NT and I think he'll be good at it. Then I see Haynesworth being backed up by Daniels on one side and Golston on the other. For OLB, it's gotta be Carter and Orakpo backed up by Chris Wilson and Rocky and Fletch in the middle. I think they are both smaller than the prototypical Mikes, but I also think they will make up for it in athleticism and toughness, and I see Fletch playing the "Ray Lewis from 5 years ago" role.
RIP 21

I haven't seen anything from Montgomery that warrants me labeling him anything else but a rotation guy. Nothing anywhere near a starting NT in a 3-4.

I think that Montgomery is way too soft to be a NT. NT is one of the most physically demanding positions to play as you are constantly double teamed. Montgomery has not even come close to showing the talent or toughness to be able to handle that role on a full-time basis.

When he and Gholston were drafted, Blache said that Monty had the better natural talent, but he didn't have the desire or drive. Gholston didn't have the natural talents, but he made up for it with his motor and desire. No, I don't have a link, but I remember reading it.

I'll back you up... I remember it, as well... and, (I could be wrong, but I seem to recall) it's the reason Golston broke into the lineup first.

That San Francisco defense had Julian Peterson and Andre Carter as the outside linebackers. Julian registered 3 sacks and Carter produced 4.5. Bryant Young was the only standout on that defense. Both the Offense and defense were terrible that year.
This is quite a different defense. We have many pieces in place to have a successful defense next year. It is not like this is a total rebuild.
A huge reason for the success of our Dline this year is Haynesworth. Do not forget that. The whole defense benefited from Haynesworth especially Rak and Carter.
Most of the time in a pass rush situation it will be a five man rush now in a 3-4.Meaning a one on one with the left tackle for Carter and one on one for Rak on the strong side. Haynesworth at LDE or RDE ensures a double team wherever Big Al lines up meaning open lanes for blitzes and one on one matchups for our OLBs.
Embrace it people. The top defenses run a 3-4. Get with the program and fall in line. This is a good thing. Andre Carter will benefit from this. He will be mainly pass rushing anyhow.
Seems as though we have one too many starting outside LB's. Carter, Rak, and Tosh. One will not be here next year. We need another MLB
So you wouldn't even have one backup at the OLB position? Blades is another MLB.
Andre Carter wrote:Damn man, you know your football.
One player who will thrive on the outside LB spot will be Chris Wilson. I believe we should have used him more this year on the edge. In a 3-4 I think he could be a very effective OLB particularly in pass rush situations.
