Why the Dirtbags?

Post by Jake »

Ok, I'll admit, after searching thouroughly, I'm starting to like the name Dirtbags. I think I have found out why Joe Bugel named our offensive line "The Dirtbags".

The baseball team at Long Beach State is named "The Dirtbags". George Allen coached the now defunct Long Beach State 49ers football team in 1990.

I think Bugel named our offensive line "The Dirtbags" as a tribute to George Allen. Maybe our line resembles Allen's offensive line's when he coached us.

Just a hunch. :feedback;

you are really reaching....

I think Bugel is a simple man...Dirtbags cause the O-line plays DIRTY...nasty, with intensity.

Besides, Hogs roll around in the dirt...etc.

I tend to agree with this scenerio. I think he more made it up on the fly than researched it... that's how we came up with the Hogs too from what I recall.

You all said the o-line plays dirty, yeah none of this clean and take it up the b-hole type football. There playing dirty, the way it should be played. See I knew Gibbs played dirty, you can't win 3 rings and be a clean player.

Dirtbags is just a name ;), an "Identity" for positions that rarely get noticed.... The Smurfs didn't play like Smurfs, and The Hogs didn't play like Hogs ;)

(side note: Joe's a coach... not a player )

I have been choped block before too, I didn't get injured though. But I have injured people in football playing dirty, in my leagues championship game I took out their star DE on a play were I took out there legs, and we went from 0-14 to 17-14. Yeah its a cheap way to win but we won, and we have the trophy and that is all that matters. If you force a clean team to try play dirty they are out of their element and are playing your game. When they play your game, you win. I was known as one of the dirtiest and most grusome players in high school and players did not want to go up against me because they knew I was cheap. I had a physcological advantage and I won battles before they even started. That is why dirty play is good. I would even punch a few players here and there in college when playing and it would take them right out of their game. My teams were never big or fast but we compensated for it and won a lot of games because we were really dirty and teams hated playing us.

To be dirty you have to have a coach to estabalish that mantality. That is whay I meant when I said about Gibbs. At least that was the case with us.

Joe G - bring your jabs to the Smack forum. As the mods will tell you, you can't cuss in any other forum but the smack, even with $(*&$*(&^#)& blocking out letters.

Hurting people on purpose in sports is ridiculous. Games are meant for fun and entertainment, not taking people out. That's just a weak way out, an excuse if you ask me... If you ask any player in pro sports, besides the Bill Romanowski's of the world they would NEVER wish another player getting hurt. Shoot, I wrestled for 15 years and was in some mean battles but I never tried hurting someone on purpose.

What do you expect from a man who uses the term "schlobberknocker"??

The man is old school, and uses terms similar to the ones used in the "Home Alone" movies (the ones kevin plays when he's alone to scare off adults), like "Merry Christmas, ya Filthy Animal".

It's part of his lingo. I sure Buges chas called many people a "dirtbag". :D

Some people never learn, sadly. This is a different place from AOL and other chatrooms. It's a small neighborhood, and the new kid with the big mouth just got sent to detention.
Let's hope his attitude is better when he comes back.
