Gray's words on the Skins' secondary

Post by PulpExposure »

Saw this; Jerry Gray's comments on the players he left behind in DC.

In personal notes at the end of every season, former secondary coach Jerry Gray critiques defensive backs and offers suggestions on how to improve.

Gray recently completed the process for the last time with the Redskins and plans to do the same after next season for the Seattle Seahawks, who this week hired him as their secondary coach. In D.C., Gray leaves behind an experienced and talented group, he said, that is capable of becoming one of the league's best. Gray believes the Redskins' secondary has the ability to accomplish great things for a long time, and he would not be surprised if it soon was second to none.

"At corner, you've got Fred Smoot, you've got DeAngelo [Hall], you've got Carlos [Rogers], you've got Justin Tryon, you've got Kevin Barnes, who I think is going to be a real good player, Bryon Westbrook," Gray said this morning in a phone interview. "At safety, you've got Chis Horton and Reed [Doughty] and Kareem Moore. What you have is a bunch of guys who can ultimately, I think, be the best secondary in football because there's a lot of talent there.

"To me, if those guys can do the little things that I talked about [in his notes], and then you get together as a collective group, they can lead the NFL. They are that talented. They can dominate the league for a long time. You don't have a lot of old guys in that secondary. If they [the team's new leaders] don't disband the secondary, they can get a lot out of it. I really believe that. You can see that these guys, if they can just keep growing together, could be that good."

The Redskins ranked 10th overall in defense this season. They were tied for eighth against the pass and tied for 26th with only 11 interceptions. Hall led the Redskins with four interceptions.

"DeAngelo has probably got some of the greatest hands I've ever been around," Gray said. "The guy can flat out catch a football - one hand, two hands, back flip, standing still. Any way you can think. He's probably the most talented guy I've ever coached, and he still has work to do.

"And I told him, 'Here's some of the things you need to do, and I think you can be All-Pro or Hall of Fame material.' There aren't many guys I've coached who have had his type of stuff. ... There are a lot of guys who haven't reached their potential yet, and there's a lot of potential there."

Two things of note for me. #1) He really likes Kevin Barnes; and #2) in his discussion of the safeties, and heck, in the entire part quoted, he doesn't mention Landry...at all.

maybe that's why Landry had so many issues and was being used in a different position than he should have been - he was not a part of Gray's secondary
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

This guy is saying that the secondary could be the best in the league? Well why are they not right now? Because he sucked as a coach in my opinion and I'm glad he's gone. We were constantly victimized by double moves.

I like the fact that he is gone...obiously he speaks about them as friends and no as players. We are far from being close to having the top DBs in the league.we have an inconsistent Rogers and a Db that is afraid of contact (Hall) and a safety that after 4 years still strugles.( Laundry) the others are projects that never seem to get it together as of yet. We need a coach that has a system where we can take advantage of our players skills and know ow to develop our draft picks. We need a defense that attacks .I am tired of having a passive defense that waits for players to get the ball and then they cant even tackle ...

I liked Jerry Gray, i wish him the best but the way he was talking about the secondary brings up a question. If the secondary is that good then why could you not get more out of them?

Considering how deep they usually had Landry playing, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he had Landry confused with the parking lot staff...

sounds like a subliminal shot at the group for not doing what he told them. Or possibly he got more out of them than he should have and he wants the new staff to keep them together so they fail. Either way, he went for the coaching job behind Zorn's back, we don't need anyone else like that here, period.

That is extremely telling ... since Landry was projected to be one of, if not the star in the defensive backfield.

But we all saw what we saw .. not as much a surprise as it is confirmation.

He didn't say that they were the best. He said that they could be the best. And why couldn't they? I totally understand your point of view, but I also understand what he is trying to say as well.

When I saw the thread title, I thought "here we go again, another bitter, classless exit by a moron who can't STFU. My bad, nothing but class. Does sound like a guy it would have been good to keep.

I don't think it's about his judgment at that point. Nothing negative he said would do anything but smack of bitterness. This is the way to make a graceful exit. That was the point.

Whoever moved Landry to free safety is at fault. He was a strong safety all the way. He actually tackled very well when he played strong safety for us his first year or so.

Landry up on the line will make him a different player. He will blitz and become a force, and will help Fletcher on the run. I believe that.

We do need a free safety unless Moore or Smoot can man that position.

Horton and Doughty are both backups to Landry.

It wasn't an issue of who moved him... It was more an issue of him (LL30) not even trying... He said it himself he will bite on every move (or something to that effect) the dude was a SS all the way and nothing is going to change that, not even the some odd million dollars a year the team pays him to play D.

A SS needs to be able to tackle. Landry can't even do that right most of the time. He's undisciplined and usually goes for the big hit instead of making a sure tackle.

There are also plays like this from LL. As the announcer says, "horrible tackling" by Laron Landry...

Ah, he was trying to fill the shoes of #21.... LL30 will forever be submitted to that standard. St21 did the same (going for the big hit) when he was a young buck, the thing was, we had Clark to back him up, and he rarely missed tackles. I think LL30 was out to erase the "runover" hi lite from Jacobs and he was looking to KO someone.
