Should've Tried Harder For Sanchez
Hindsight 20/20 but the kid from USC is one of only 4 QB's still ballin'
Maybe we should've done more to land the franchise QB.

we are definetly better off for not getting Sanchez OR Cutler - we are in better shape today because we did not make either of those guys our QB
This is very simple - we do NOT need Peyton Manning or his clone - we need a team

we no longer should add stars like the fantasy football that we have been doing or like some here think will be a good way to re-build this franchise - we just need players that will give their best effort and will make the other players around them better
good teams will in most cases beat teams of all stars - look at what the Jets did with a rookie against all those offensive weapons the Chargers have
I hope Shanahan and Allen don't bring in "the best players available" like we have been doing here the past 10 years
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

The Jets were 31st in passing offense and 2nd in rushing offense. It was as much Shonne Greene as it was Mark Sanchez yesterday.
...any given Sunday....

Agreed, hindsight is 20/20. It's a fruitless endeavor

The situation in NY is totally different than here. Our team would not have been very good for a rookie (much less a Vet). NY has the number 1 D and the number 1 rush in the league. That's a good situation for a rookie

Re: Should've Tried Harder For Sanchez
Come on. We would have had to give up the 1st we used to get Orakpo, as well as other draft picks, to move up to get him.
What, you don't think Sanchez's mighty 100 passing yards won the game for them?
The Jets win because they are great at running the ball, and play sick defense. Not because of Sanchez. Does the kid have promise? Sure. But when he throws 20 INTs behind the best line in football...man...could you imagine what would have happened to him behind OUR line?

He's only a rookie, though, so it's way too soon to pass judgment on him. Peyton Manning threw a ton of picks his rookie year. You cant deny though that he had some good games during the regular season and during the playoffs he's been very solid. I think he's got a great career ahead of him.

Peyton had 3739 yards, 26 TDs and 28 picks in his rookie year. hardly a comparison between the 2.

Sanchez numbers are not very impressive, which is why such responses are not surprising ... statistics seem to be more important than winning here.
But the Jets are built around defense, and running, which has been good for the rookie. And he's responded well, making critical plays when needed ... like yesterday's scramble and TD throw in the 4th Q instead of settling for a 3 pointer ... which, incidentally, would have allowed San Diego to win the game.
He threw 2 TDs the week before (three TDs if Edwards didn't drop that perfectly thrown ball).
Yes, he is aided by an excellent running game, but defenses also have to respect the kid's ability to hit down field targets by not selling out for the run.
As a first year player, he demonstrates a maturity and feel for the game that we've not seen in our 4 year starter.
I'm just say'n
Oh yeah ... and with the other three QBs in the final four being Brees, Manning and Favre, I think the kid should be proud that he's been able to manage the games, and not succumb to rookie mistakes. He's also tied with Namath as the only Jets QB to win two playoff games.

I don't think anyone is saying he's not a good prospect at QB, Ray. However, that's not the point of this thread. This thread is about how we should have moved up to draft him.
Do you think, in hindsight, that we should have? Are we better as a team having given up our 1st this year, as well as our 1st last year (i.e., Brian Orakpo) to get him?
I don't.

Neither do I. But I can't deny that it would be nice to have a QB in Washington that really gives us hope that he'll be our guy for ten years.
I've never been a great fan of trading up in the draft though, especially when your team has a multitude of needs, like ours does (and did at the time of last year's draft).

If given the choice today... I'd still take Orakpo. In fact I'd take Orakpo over anyone in the draft last year.
I'm really bummed that there isn't a top flight QB prospect this year, what happened to the great college quarterback? Are they extinct?
Tebow threw for more yards than Bradford.
Anyone who's followed college football the last couple years knows its been all about Tim Tebow maybe he's our chance at a franchise QB

I'd be very surprised if there is not a future franchise QB selected after the second round in both this draft and next year's draft
- nobody knows for sure who is going to adapt from the college game - we need to work on our O line and depth - we are not going to go the fantasy football route anymore, well hopefully not

I don't know how you or anyone else ... including me ... could say definitively either way ... Pulp. An educated guess, at best, is all you could make. So guess away ... but ... the foundation of your guess/opinion is really weak, considering that we don't know at this point how well Sanchez will develop over the next couple of years, for which the prospects look pretty encouraging right about now ... and we don't know what the Redskins will do with the additional 2010 pick they would have given up to get him. We do know what we got with Orakpo, but we don't know how Orakpo will respond as an outside LB in a 3-4.
I love me some Orakpo ... heck, I'm here in Austin ... but I would consider a franchise QB more valuable than any LB not named Lawrence Taylor .. OK ? And I don't think Brian is likely to be another LT.
So if Sanchez turns into a legit, top 10 QB or better ... and we don't secure an equal over the next couple of years ... then you'll be dead wrong ...but again, it's too early to tell.
Who knows ... maybe we pick a QB this draft that turns out to be a Peyton Manning clone .. then you'd be right.
What do you think the odds are?
Mark Sanchez isn't very good. The Jets made the playoffs in spite of him. They have the best running attack and defense in the league, and still limped into the playoffs because of Sanchez. He has had absolutely nothing to do with their success.
I suppose Ray would argue that Campbell in the same situation with his much better numbers would somehow not make the playoffs, because he doesn't make the "team" better like Sanchez "obviously did" because we all know that the quarterback is the only position on the field.

He looked overmatched in almost every game. He is lucky to have the best Defense in the NFL, probably the best RB combo, and a coach who didn't give up on him when they were on that losing streak, he's this year's Trent Dilfer. If they win the Super Bowl, it won't be because of him.
