Shut Up Schlereth

Post by Gibbs4Life »

"He just kind of said, 'Keep it simple, stupid,' " said Schlereth, now an analyst with ESPN. "We were simple and we were consistent. I think one of the things that Mike was able to do was take essentially six or seven running plays and make it look like 36 or 37 running plays. He used different formations, different adjustments, motion.

"Ultimately, it's 11 guys understanding exactly what they're doing. If you change your formation or you change your shift or you change your personnel grouping, only one or two guys are lining up and giving a different look, but nine guys are doing the exact same things."

You would think now that Shanny's here and he played here (which i think he has forgotten due to sour grapes) he might get off the skins case a little bit.

I'm confused why you guys have an issue with it. Sounds like he's saying that MS runs similar plays with just a little lineup so it dumbs down the offensive line's responsabilities. I think that's a GREAT thing especially if we have a young group coming in here next season.

The crap he said was warranted IMHO, the same with B. Mitch. What's happening now is what these guys have been clamoring for, for years, it shouldn't have taken this long.

One of the best things about changing coaches is teams don't know what to expect at first, that's what we have unless they listen to Schlereth

But Brian Mitchell made his comments out of frustration and obvious care for the team. That potato from Idaho has taken joy from bashing the Redskins. He is a twit as far as I am concerned.

Seriously!
You really think that is some sort of secret? You really think D coordinators don't know that already? Sonny will tell you that Lambardi had three run plays. He believed in out executing the D.

The quote is meant to be complimentary; it doesn't reveal any secrets.

He can make six or seven plays look like 36 or 37. A coach goes in to each game with about 100 plays.

It doesn't mean that Shanahan has ONLY 6 or 7 plays, but shows that Shanahan can confuse defenses by never showing what his true intentions are.

No secrets here. It's all about execution. Back in Gibbs 1, everybody knew the half dozen running plays that were in the Redskins playbook, but by the time the substitutions and motion had finished, people still ended up surprised. And even if they did guess, the Redskins execution of the play was invariably so perfect that it wouldn't be stopped.

This team would be 4 or 5 wins better every year just by having players executing the damned play properly!

I admit that I have absolutely no idea what Schlereth has been saying that has you folks so riled up, but he was one hell of a good football player :-)

As Sclereth tells it, Shanahan's principle is pretty much the same that Joe Gibbs used: limited number of plays practiced to perfection but run from many different formations.

The blocking methods might be different. The plays might be different, but the underlying principle is the same.

In fact, we saw Gibbs simplify the pre-snap movement when it became clear that this generation of OL could not handle it a cleanly as the Hogs did.

(Note: you can see how good the Hogs were when you look at SB 26, in which the Redskins ran the Buffalo "no-huddle" offense better than Buffalo did. Gibbs later said, "They were so smart that I could do almost anything with them..." Another reason why Jeff Bostic and Joe Jacoby ought to go into the Hall of Fame -- along with Russ Grimm.)

The Colts only have 12 Offensive pass plays. They use different formations to confuse the D. That has been known for a long time, and it hasn't slowed them down yet! Settle.
