Taking over a team two years removed from their third Superbowl victory, this coach posted the Redskins worst record in 30-years in his first year as head coach. That year's record of 3-13 still stands as the Redskins worst record since they went 1-12 in 1961 (that still qualifies as the worst record in nearly 38 years!). Even though he had one of the best front office staffs in the league, and worked under legendary owner Jack Kent Cooke it was still 6 years (long after Mr. Cooke passed away) before he was able to lead the team back into the playoffs with a meager 10-6 record that was just good enough to win them the division ahead of the Dallas Cowboys who finished 8-8.

After jumping out to a 6-2 start in his final season, he was terminated midseason after losing four of his last five games (with a 7-6 record) when it became apparent that he was in no danger of making a playoff appearence (which turned out correct since the Eagles finished 11-5 and the Giants finished 12-4).

By coincidence, it's the same coach!

Of course when this is taken in context, it becomes less impressive.

When Marty Schottenhiemer was fired, he left behind a team that finished 14-2. Norv took them 11-5 in his first year as their head coach...but after two other head coaching jobs, you would expect any expirienced head coach to be able to keep some momentum from the previous year.

The thing about playoff wins is more impressive when you first earn a playoff berth. When you can win your division with an 8-8 record (which he did in his second year), it makes it less so.

Maybe one of the best, but not THE best. Not even the best this decade. Marty went from a 4-12 record in '03 to a 12-4 record in '04. There are several other occasions similar to Marty's "turnaround" where the team went from 4-12 to 12-4 within a year, but if you're looking for 8-8 to 13-3 records, I'd say Norval ranks maybe somewhere in the top 10-15, but how frequently would you expect a team to have that kind of "turnaround" in it's 50-year history?

I didn't give an opinion one way or another just thought it was interesting...The one that still kills me is he is the only one around here not named Gibbs who has won the division since...I can't remember.

Both Norv and Gibbs 2.0 had Redskins playoff wins this decade (Norv with two different teams). I'm trying to remeber the name of the Cowbgirls HC that had a playoff win this decade...
