Shannahan's Staff

Post by gregory smith »

What should we expect in the way of the new coaching staff? Will he want any of the existing staff? Greg Blache, Danny Smith, Bugel, Gray, Olividotti? I like Bugel, but he may retire, and I just can't get on board with Jerry Gray. I guess my concern for Gray stems from the fact that he coaches Landry and Rogers, two very talented guys that just don't seem to be coached very well. Who are some of the names that we can be looking for as new Redskin assistants?

Well if Kubiak get fired I like to see him, Alex Gibbs and Shanny's son come here. I really like Gray and would not mind him as DC...Yes he coaches Landry because he has too...

I'm mixed on Gray. We hear lots of good things about him, yet you see his players (i.e. Landry and Rodgers) constantly making the same mistakes.

I won't shed any tears if/when he goes. He seems like a great guy, and the players love him. Still . . . the players who love him also seem to be the ones who are paid way too much to be making the mistakes they are making.

I think Gray is college HC material. He's been in the business a while and I get the impression he knows how to carry himself. Yet, his position coaching could be questioned here. I see him going to a Division II college team where he can focus on the big picture.

I see Shanahan bringing in Bates, who left the Broncos last year to go to USC. USC is not real happy with him right now and I could see him jumping to come work with Shanny again. Then with the possibility of Kubiak being fired and bringing Shanny's son with him, there could be a log jam at the OC and QB coaching spots.

Defense is what concerns me. Shanny's defense and personnel decisions are what go him fired by his good friend and former owner Bowlen. I would prefer to see Blache stay because we know he can deliver a top 5 defense.

I'm not sure Shanahan could bring someone in to deliver a good defense. Although, it wouldn't take much to move Haynesworth to NT, and have Orakpo rushing from the 3-4 OLB. We'd need more depth at LB and we'd need to abandon Carter.

Spending 40 mill in paid out money ensures we will not be switching to a 3-4 defense. I've seen it mentioned in numerous threads. It ain't gonna happen folks. I hope Blache & Danny Smith are holdovers for the next coach, they'd be dumb not to keep them both.

Haynesworth can play nose in a 3-4 and Carter can play the OLB opposite Orakpo. That's what he played in SF before he was a Skin. While we might not do a 3-4 because we'd only have 1 MLB, no where to put McIntosh, and no 3-4 style DEs (maybe Daniels, but he's way too old to count on), the lack of a transition won't be because of Orakpo or Haynesworth.

I'd not be opposed to Gray staying, though he hasn't developed the talent he's had on hand as much as I would have liked to seen. Landry and Rogers certainly haven't turned out to justify their draft status.

As for Danny Smith...I don't know. Our Special Teams haven't been great, but haven't been horrible, either. Is that enough to justify keeping him?

Carter DID play 3-4 linebacker, but wasn't very good at it. That's one reason SF made zero effort to resign him when he hit Free Agency.

And Haynesworth could play nose, but it'd be a complete waste of his talents. His particular talent is that he penetrates the line...whereas nose tackles are supposed to just occupy blockers.

HOLD UP HERE...

We must fire all of these guys and completely start over.

Blatche and Smith were pushed on Zorn...do NOT do that to the next coach. If we hire Shanahan, let him and Allen hire their staff. Let's make a break with all of these guys. I get this weird feeling Blatche and others are Snyder's guys...

Snyder has hired his GM, let him hire his HC who hires his staff.

On top of all of that I also think...

Blatche -- We've done well in spite of him. I do not like his "my-way-is-the-only-way approach. He also seems to believe, a great player can play anywhere...they can't. Examples -- Landry is a SS and should never have been moved to FS. Orakpo has never played LB. He plays Haynesworth at RDE on 3rd downs -- making Haynesworth go up against their best OL...what a dumb idea. Jason Taylor at LDE -- what a stupid place for him to play...he was horrible there. Rogers has underperformed.

Smith -- Our Special Teams have stunk, they aren't even average...they are horrible. We never get any returns, ever... We've gone through punters, kickers, Randal El has not produced but they keep on going with him.

Fire all of them!!!! Let Allen and the new coach hire their team...PLEASE!

On the NFL Network pre-game show, Jason LaCanfora reported that he did expect Shanahan to accept the skins' hc job and he had been working on getting a staff together.

among the possibilities mentioned were Kubiak and Kyle Shanahan if Houston makes a coaching change, as well as Bob Slowik, a former Denver def. coordinator.

J-LaC reported that shanahan and slowik were sharing office space in the denver area, recruiting coaches and reviewing game film already....

Sounds like Shanny already knows what team he is heading to, otherwise, what films would he be reviewing?

This is a deal that several people have reported as a part of a bigger deal for several weeks now.

Here we go again:

Hiring a coach that HAD with another team in another decade. And hey, let him hire his staff from 1998!

If Shannahan does come to DC, he should start with a fresh set of assistants. New blood. Those same asisstant coaches were the ones who got him fired from Denver in the first place by fielding a mediocre team.

I agree RiC - the changes both real and aluded to have not just happened - this has obviously been in the works for many weeks

btw - I guess we are just assuming that Shanahan is the next HC - I'd also venture to guess that this thinking is based on the fact that we always get whatever Snyder wants - I suppose that while we do not like most things that Snyder has done it's "OK" that the "hottest" HC right now is Shanahan so let's let Snyder loose and just get him  - OK vent over

I hope that Bruce Allen has decided who he thinks is the best fit as HC and also has thought out how the new FO is going to be structured after this season is over

at the Bruce Allen announcement we were led to believe that this franchise was going to be heading in a new direction and with new guys making the decisions here - this sounds great - it also sounds to me like Snyder might indeed be going to turn the team over to others, like we all have been asking him to do :)

now all of a sudden - it looks like "well, we need to get Shanahan so let's get Snyder to make this happen .... "

ANYWAY - I am just going to let this unfold a little more - I'm not sure about having to "blow things up" but I do hope that we see big changes in who makes the decisions here - for starters, we need to let go the current coaching staff and bring in a new coaching staff that is assembled by the FO here - then we need the FO and coaching staff to evaluate the players here to decide who they have that suits what this franchise needs going forward - then we can begin to think about adding to this mix to begin the process of rebuilding this franchise and trying to put a consistently competitive product on the field

the most important and real changes we need here are a change in attitude and a feeling of accountability - it is time to change the culture around here

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance

I don't see play from any group of people, short of maybe Bugel's boys, that deem a coach worthy of staying. ESPECIALLY GREG BLACHE. We have too much talent to be giving up the stuff we do. If I see 7 yards off of a 3rd and 5 one more time, I'm going to :puke: !!!!!!

I hope that the only players and coaches that stay are those that the new FO guys think can help the team going forward - no coach or player (including Bugel) should be here next year except if that coach or player suits what the new offense and defensive co-ordinators want for this team going forward

we don't need any coaches or players that "have earned their way on to the team" or showed that they "have the talent to play in this league" - we need players and coaches with a desire to be better and to make the others around them better

this franchise needs a big time culture change and nobody presently here should be granted an exception

what we have seen here for the last 2 years under Zorn needs to be, and will be, erased - the NFL has changed a lot and we have a lot of catching up to do - we do not need to be like any of the older teams we need to be better than the teams we play against now
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance

How about Safeties at the back of the end zone on first and goal?

Our bend-don't-break is broken already, so let's get aggressive. If we can't cover Jason Witten anyway, send the guy that is covering him after romo. Try a double a gap blitz. We can't protect against it, maybe our opponents won't be able to either.

How about our two safeties playing over 20 yards away from the line in consecutive run plays giving them 7 to 8 yards per carry at a time in the game when they want to run off the clock?

Amen, brother. I've had this same problem with our defensive scheme for as long as I can remember. We've got physical corners. Let them be physical. We've got a good pass rush this season. That should allow for better secondary play. Instead, we are playing the secondary so far off the LOS that it not only makes it difficult for the secondary to be effective, it also negates the pass rush because there is always some one open underneath the coverage to dump the ball off to when Carter or Orakpo get into the backfield.

If Shanahan becomes the next HC, he has to blow up the entire coaching staff on both sides and start new.

I'm sure that he has the pedigree to bring in good coaches but he would have to get someone in here for the defensive side of the ball that will recognize what they got and use them to their fullest potential. Step on the necks and keep them in check. One poster said it earlier about some of the decisions on positions. Orakpo needs to be next to Fat Albert. Landry needs to be at SS. And this defense needs to be agressive but disciplined. You can't reward Landry by moving him back to SS after he bit on two double moves. You have to send him a message and sit his butt down for a half or a game (the disicipline).

I think that Jason should be given another shot or at least be the guy at the top and make others take it from him. But hopefully Shanny can get Allen to get him some OLinemen and the OL Coach can get them where they need to be with run blocking and pass-pro. Buges has done a decent job with all of the injuries but I see a tired Buges now.

I've never been impressed with Danny Smith. Kicking and punt return problems have plagued this team Smith's entire tenure.
