Danny felt the "temperature" around. He knew that, short of hiring a GM, he would not stand a chance of credibility next season.
Hopefully Allen is truly given the keys to the shiny new car. I don't see him accepting anything other than that, but with DS, we will unfortunately just have to wait and see... As I blogged months ago - not enough to just hire a new GM - DS has to give him 100% of the decision making. All Snyder has to say is, "Yeah I'll sign that cheque."
agreed BH - this is so close to being what this franchise needs - huge kudos to Snyder if he indeed goes down that road
I think many of us think that we can turn this around fairly quickly and it will be a lot easier if Snyder does in fact not only give Allen the power but also the "support"
this is also good timing in my opinion
I think that this will mean that Gruden has a fairly decent shot here
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
Do you think he knows more Football and the GM job better than Daniel Snyder?
I rest my case.
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

most here know more about the NFL than Snyder and there are a lot of fans here, like me, that obviously know very little

I think it is a package deal of Allen and Gruden to the Redskins. Zorn finishes the season, and then is let go. Washington then must interview a minority maybe Blache who then stays as defensive coordinator and then Gruden is hired as head coach.

Yes, he comes from OUR bloodline. Wow, this is all coming in so fast. This is making my head spin.
The Redskins already have complied with the league's Rooney Rule and have interviewed at least two minority candidates, an NFL source told Schefter.
A news conference was expected to be held Thursday afternoon to announce the hire.
They really kept this on the hush!
Nahhh ... maybe a couple of quick phone calls.

You spelled check wrong
I agree, though BH... if he gets full control, we'll be all the better for it.
...any given Sunday....
RIP #21 Sean Taylor. You will be loved and adored by Redskins fans forever!!!!!
GSPODS:
The National Anthem sucks.
What a useless piece of propagandist rhetoric that is.
Here's a thought on the hiring. Some may have wanted other names, etc. But with Allen, you have a guy who does have history with this franchise and he is experienced in this job. I think it's a very safe route to take which is what this team needs at this point. We don't need to take risks by bringing in someone who's never been an exclusive GM before.

No I didn't. Y'all spell it wrong... well actually, y'all just change the spelling so that it's easier.

I'd like to formally extend an olive branch to Vinny and allow him to continue as he has in D.C. for what seems like forever... I need a squash stooge.
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.
Happy for you, Skins fans. Hopefully the Bears will do something similar soon too - but they are probably too miserly.
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom – for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

Well, this might be a stretch but...
In 2005 Bruce Allen was the GM for Tampa Bay, who the Redskins beat in the playoffs 17-10, for our only playoff win this decade. So technically he already has a Redskins playoff win under his belt. I'm thinking about leaving work to light trash cans on fire and flip cars. Who's coming with me?
In all seriousness, I'd like to echo the sentiment of several others. I don't know a whole lot about Bruce Allen, but at this stage anybody with experience at the position, that can actually get full control from Danny Boy is a major upgrade. The decision alone to hand over control (if thats what this is) is a major stepping stone for this organization.
The Redskins pointed out in their statement that Allen's teams -- both in Oakland and Tampa Bay -- have won five division championships since 2000.
Allen, 53, lost his job as the general manager in Tampa Bay after the 2008 season, in which the Buccaneers collapsed to miss the playoffs; head coach Jon Gruden was dismissed then as well. But his track record is one of success; he won the George Young NFL Executive of the Year award in 2002 with the Raiders.
From 2004-2008, Allen served as General Manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which included their 2005 and 2007 AFC South Championships. Allen joined the management team of the Oakland Raiders in 1995, where during nine seasons he was part of three AFC West Championships, two appearances in the AFC Championship game and a berth in Super Bowl XXXVII.

So they really couldn't go after elite level of talent. They did draft pretty good over the years though.
After Oakland Allen went to Tampa Bay, not Green Bay. And they certainly did not draft well while he was there. With that said, anyone is an improvement over Vinny and Allen, I believe, did well when he was with Oakland. If Gruden comes along with Allen I'll be thrilled. If we are stuck with Zorn next season, I wont be too happy about this move.

Finally... a fan who understands what a celebration is...
I'll meet you at L'nfant Plaza... if I'm not there, start without me...
