Dirtbags - Part II
Okay, we all know how Jake feels about the "Dirtbags". I, too, feel that there are better nicknames out there.
How do you feel?
How do you feel?

C'mon, now...Back in the day, I'm sure the name "hog" was met with a similar reaction. It's Bugel's way of setting the unit apart from the rest of the team. He's making them feel responsible for everything they do. You watch, kiddies. In time, there will be "honorary Dirtbags" and they will be proud to be named as such. Ask Riggins.
Besides, I think Joe is telling his linemen that there will never be another "Hog" line. I think he's also telling them that the name will stand out in the annals of NFL history so long as the play of the line does. He's establishing a sense of cohesion, and who better than Buges to do it for our offensive line ?

I hate the name because it's an insult. The Hogs wasn't and still isn't an insult. I guess I'll talk to Buges about it.
Hey TC... maybe I'll invite you, Head Bag, and the Dirtbags over for a barbeque this time.

I don't think that the line should just randomly be labled. I think if a nickname arises from practice, or conversations, or media then that would be the proper way to do it. It just seems to me that they are trying too hard to recreate what was done before.

I agree totally, but Bugel is the best when it comes to getting O-lines in the shape of things and I truely feel as does Buges' that this line is gonna be special. Buges wants them to live up to the hype of the game, their jobs as one complete unit, and to be a force to recon with.
I have travelled the net and found the Redskins promise land. This is, by far, the best site out there for Redskins/NFL News, Notes, Opinions, and so much more.

That's exactly how it was done before. After watching them, the coach referred to them as hogs during practice. If Buges wants to refer to them as Dirtbags in a similar fashion...and if the OL players want to adopt it, I'm all for it.

I don't think they sat down and had a meeting on what they called themselves.... throwing names into a hat and debating the best name for themselves....
Buges was probably teaching them about the opposition... and used "dirtbags" to describe the opposition or described how they needed to fight with any means necessary.... and if they had to be dirtbags then they had to be dirtbags.... and then the guys probably thought it was catchy and it stuck.... I don't think it was a planned thing to rename the offensive line..... and even if it was .... it's good, it gives them an identity that usually OL don't get..... name another group of OL more famous in NFL history than the Hogs?

I think thats all I want. I would just like to hear the story of how the nickname came to be. I would like it to be meaningful and not just a cool name they started calling themselves for no reason other than to have a nickname.

Well there's one thing I know for sure, and that's that joe bugel is a better oline coach then me or anyone else at this site. He obvoiusly had a reason for naming the oline in the 80's the hogs, and now Im sure he has a reason to name this oline the dirtbags. So instead of worrying about this nickname, Im going to sitback and let joe bugel do his thing.

Dirtbags is better than some of the names they were called last year even though it was the scheme and not the players that was the issuse

Personally if it helps them play better they can dress them up in pink tu tu's for all I care.
I'd rather they keep the Hog nickname and use it as a motivator. Joining the Hog fraternity should be the goal of every O-lineman. Until they EARN that right they are pledges or hogettes. I'd say Jansen has earned his right to be a Hog. MAYBE Samuels (Sorry Jake). Other than that- they are all still pledging the exclusive fraternity that is, The Hogs.
