Let's pretend its the end of the season...

Post by TincoSkin »

Assuming this season is a loss and zorn is out at its culmination, the next logical question is, "Where do we go from here?"

There are two parts to this:

First, who will be installed as Head Coach? (also, the GM question)

Second, what will happen to the players we have under contract?

The first part has been discussed in the media and in several threads here. There are several head coaches out there with great resumes, people who would bring an air of professionalism to the organization. But without changes on the field the chance of any coach bringing success to this franchise is nill.

We obviously have major weaknesses. Our O line is defeated, our RB is old with little help behind him, our wide outs are a much maligned group and our TE, well... Cooley is great; our best offensive player.

Our D is better. We have a good line, including big Al, we have some young guys and some vets in the LB position and our D backs are ok. We could use some help there but its not as pressing as our O.

So! How are we to proceed? Do we keep the O as is and add depth? Do we trade away our aged stars for picks? Do we blow up the offense and start anew? Do we sell our D for a qb or wide outs? There are many options.

I think we have to keep the D intact. It is the best part of our team and is the only part that resembles a superbowl quality unit.

We have to dismantle the O completely. They are a mix of old vets whos years are numbered and young guns raised in this, a retarded program. Its time for a mass grave, my fellow fans. Its time to start from scratch.

What should we do as far as the players are concerned?

Well we could cut some overpriced vets...signing new players is going to be difficult...only those with 6 years or more will become UFA , Two Tags per team...and owners will not have a minimum cap they have to spend if no CBA is reached..

Okay, it's the end of the season...

Samuels and Thomas have been forced into retirement by injuries and Portis and Moss look out of gas. Defensively the team was fine, but unimpressive.

The team ends the season 5-11 and Dan Snyder fires his friend Vinny Cerrato and head coach Jim Zorn. Next Snyder hires Joe Gibbs to be the Executive VP of Football Operations. His first move as VP is to hire Steve Keim the Cardinals Director of Player Personnel, then former player Russ Grimm to be the head coach.

Grimm promotes Jerry Gray to DC and hires former Steelers QB coach and current Hurricanes OC Mark Whipple to run the Redskins offense. He fills the staff with contacts he's made over the years as a coach.

Keim, Grimm and Gibbs get to work rebuilding the team. With an uncapped year the team cuts Portis, Moss and ARE without ramifications. The line is a big priority and the Skins sign one offensive lineman in free agency and draft two on draft day.

Slowly but surely the Redskins climb out of their hole. They develop a reputation for drafting intelligently, and a commitment to team building and win 2 Superbowls in a 5 year span...

As long as DS is still the owner, does it really matter?
With the Cardinals reaching the Super Bowl, is Dan Snyder officially the worst owner in the league?

while fantasy, that sound plausible. im keeping my fingers crossed.

as far as reality goes, i think danny blows up the team hires a college coach with no real experience, drafts a new qb and proceeds to get him sacked relentlessly because he pays no attention the the O line.

In a weird way, I would want to keep Betts around too. I think he's got a lot going to offer if we have blocking but we haven't in a long time.

For me it all starts with firing Vinny. The damage is so great now that I think the team needs a Team President…
I’d make a pitch for Dungy… I don’t wants Gibbs because he’s to close to the situation this team needs it own identity.
I let the new TP make the call on a GM.
The TP and the GM will pick the coach.
From there evaluate the current roster. I’m dumping high priced non producing players (banking on no cap next year)
Then I start to build an O’Line. Won’t be much in FA next year but there should be enough there to help..
Push for the best UFA olineman out there.
NO TRADING OF DRAFT PICKS we go oline with the first two picks next year…
Lots of QB’s in next years draft take one mid round. Look to get a pick for Campbell..Pick up journeyman QB like Leftwich.
Skill players are here you have to look at Kelly, Thomas and Davis for at least one more year.
Look for RB in late rounds may have to go into season with Betts as RB. Look to fill some skill position in FA (cheap).
On D use Tags on Carlos if you can’t upgrade and Rocky (may not have to if no CBA. Also look for LB so BO can play DE.

With an uncapped year this team has such a golden opportunity to get better right away. Jahri Evans is going to be a free agent and there's a good chance we could pick Trent Williams or Russell Okung with our first pick in the draft in April. With those two guys we could do a lot to rebuild the tattered line.

He won't be a FA. The owners do not want a new CBA. 2010 will be uncapped.

He won't?? As I understand it he'll be a RFA because under a uncapped year a player will have to have 6 years in the league to be a UFA

Ok, but a RFA is different than a FA, in that we would get compensation in the form of a draft pick if another team wants him.

Not sure what we could get for Campbell, but an uncapped year would be a great opportunity to dump some salaries.

Keep in mind, a team can't just sign FA's. They have to lose a FA in order to sign a FA. That kind of complicates things under current management, who knows what they'll do?

Here are some OL FA's...Richie Incognito, Rich Seubert, Chris Snee, Logan Mankins, Chad Clifton, John Tait, and Taitusi Lutui. I think these are guys who could help our O-lines woes.
