Sources have confirmed that the Washington Redskins recently tried to hire Mike Shanahan to replace Jim Zorn and Shanahan declined. The sources would not rule out the possibility that Shanahan would reconsider in the offseason.
"Shanahan told the franchise there was little he could do in the middle of the season for them and that changing coaches during the season in the NFL rarely works,'' a Redskins management source told FanHouse. "Several people that Dan Snyder trusts have suggested, if he makes a move, he should turn it over to secondary coach Jerry Gray. That could still happen.
"We are trying to give Jim every chance to turn it around. The move to [bring in offensive consultant Sherm] Lewis is to take more off Jim's plate, especially the play-calling, because it is not working, and that is where Jim is spending much of his time. Now he can coach the entire team. Let's see where that gets us.''
Reports surfaced Sunday night, after Washington's embarrassing 14-6 home loss to Kansas City, that Lewis would take over the Redskins' play-calling duties. The team confirmed that change Monday.
The Redskins currently sit at 2-4 and in last place in the NFC East, with losses to Detroit, Carolina and Kansas City -- teams that have four total wins combined. Washington hosts Philadelphia next Monday night prior to a Week 8 bye, and has just one game remaining against a team with a record currently under .500.

I believe he turned it down to come in here mid-season. I'm not even sure he was offered anything. I think he is being courted right now to come in end of season with Vinny not attached
Miss you 21

If possible I'd like to see the new HC take over with 2-3 games left. That way they get to evaluate the players while the season is still running, much better than trying to do it from practice/game tapes during the offseason.
Mind you I cant see they learn much from the OL, they will all be on injured reserve by then
Changing head coaches won't help, even with a big name coach - as long as Snyder and Cerato run the team from the top down. I will start getting excited when there is talks of a new GM with 100% control - and then a new coach would be something to talk about.

The team ain't playoff bound, but at least it can maintain its dignity.
Higher draft pick or Dignity... Tough choice there...
That shouldn't be tough...I think that "dignity" is loooooong gone. I've watched the games thus far...
Commentators literally laugh when they start talking about the skins. I would say we get less respect than any team in the league right now --- and that includes the Raiders.

I just heard "Fail to the Redskins" on ESPN... horrible
The media will collect many IOUs from Snyder. Be prepared for the ridicule and please support our players. They need us now more than ever.
Any fan can be a good fan during winning times but the real test of a fan comes when the team is at the lowest point.
I will support the players throughout the the whole ordeal even if I consider the Owner and Front Office monuments to stupidity and incompetence.
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!
At least with Mike Shannahan he knows how to build an offense. He wasn't a great GM, but as a personnel man he knows the offense inside and out. With the Broncos he was able to build an awesome offense and he drafted the right players and brought the right free agents on board.
What he would need as HC/GM is a strong DC who also has a little personnel experience... like Gregg Williams did, where they could choose their own players. That might work.
Still, I'd like to see a real GM in there separate from the HC

Players Change the Team stays the same.... We are at the lowest point, are you sure? Watch, we will win a few more games and knock ourselves out of the picking in the top 10 of next year's draft.
#21 (36) This IS and will always be the High watermark where all new DB's are measured.
Smart decision by Shanahan either way. You're not going to do anything by coming here in the middle of this wretched season.
