Samuels Season, Career likely over

Post by SnyderSucks »

Per Redskins Insider, Samuels now expects to miss the rest of the season, and likely also end his career due to his neck injury.

Sad day for everyone involved. It is good he is getting out without a serious complication or nerve damage.
With the Cardinals reaching the Super Bowl, is Dan Snyder officially the worst owner in the league?

You ain't kidding.

I'm waiting to read more conformation on it and see what happens. Hopefully he will be ok and can resume his career but his long-term health is the most important part.

Samuels plans to meet with physicians Tuesday to re-evaluate his injury, but after speaking with league sources the past two days, I expect Samuels to sit out the rest of the season and seriously contemplate retirement. When you start talking about spinal cords (Samuels has played with stenosis, a narrowing of the spine, since high school.) and possible nerve damage, well, Samuels is too smart to risk his future health. No player in that locker room is tougher or more dedicated to his teammates than Samuels; he's proven that time and time again, players said, but it's not as if he has a broken arm or a high-ankle sprain. We're talking about being able to walk.

That means the Skins season is also likely over.

Wow. Well, regardless of which way he decides, I do hope Samuels keep his health and well-being as his highest priority.

Man, I would hate to see him go. He's had a fabulous career.

Didn't know he had stenosis. Anyway, now we have 0 NFL caliber OT's. That's wonderful.

This is crappy news. I hope and pray Chris Samuels has a complete recovery. If he does have to retire we will be losing a great one.

Wishing Chris well.

He needs to focus on taking good care of himself. I was concerned that there was more involved than a "stinger" when they announced that he'd not be playing on Sunday. I hope he makes the decision that's right for him. If that means retirement, then he needs to do that.

Unfortunately, Samuels is the one player on this team who cannot be replaced by others currently on the roster. This hurts.

Is the career of six time Pro Bowl left tackle Chris Samuels in jeopardy? Samuels went down with a stinger, and to football fans, that’s generally something they associate with a lot of pain, but not much of a recovery time; but there’s a lot more to the situation because of Chris’ Stenosis condition (a narrowing of the spine). That sucks. I am here with everyone else and say Samuels has to look at the bigger picture and take care of his health. He has been a great player for us and I wish him well.

I don't know what kind of substance fellow TheHogs.net member Crazyhorse spikes his drinks with, but the dude practically predicted some months ago this thing would happen.

Granted, he said Samuels had a severe ankle injury, but that is beside the point. He was spot on about his evaluation of the health of our Oline.

It's a shame for Samuels. He had a great career, but health comes first. Thanks for all the great memories Chris!

I'll also weigh in with a vote in favor of Samuels doing whatever it takes to ensure a long and healthy life after football. With that said, I hope he recovers quickly and plays for us again. But I'll understand if he's not able to.

...

I hate to beat a dead horse but how is it exactly that this team entered the season with exactly one quality NFL offensive tackle? You start two, and they rarely get through the season, yet the Redskins had one.

I guess we should blame that on Zorn and Campbell too, right? Lombardy and Manning couldn't win with this line.

If there is a cap next season and Samuels retires, the dead cap number would be about $14 million.

And if that is true, how pathetic is it really? Samuels was a big question mark going into the season even before this injury.

The thought that he may not play again is a tragedy.

And the fact that we have absolutely no effective back up for him is a travesty.

It is a travesty that his career may be over, but I wish him good health overall. One thing I'll admit is that we've had some tough freakin guys on our team. Samuels with this, Jansen's numerous career threatening injuries, Daniels recovering from a blown out knee, Randy Thomas now tearing both tri-ceps.

Good luck Chris, Randy, and whoever else is deep in their career with serious injury. I'll sport my Samuels jersey as long as it holds up!

This is terrible news and it only supports the lack of effort the FO has put forth in obtaining or developing young offensive linemen. I hope he will lead a normal life and he has been one of the few bright spots the last ten years. And the hits keep on coming

yeah, that is truly unfortunate... if he retires, it is a shame he couldn't retire on his own, but rather be forced into making the decision... however, can't argue that his health (present and future) is of the utmost priority...

I suspect it is the end of his career. Even if he could play again, he probably should not. Sometimes players are one injury away from permanent damage.

This is one of my saddest days as a Skins fan in recent years. I have only one thing to say to Chris:

Thank you.

I added a comment in this Blog:

Well the Skins currently have five draft picks in the 2010 draft (no third or sixth) so I guess they will need to draft four offensive lineman and one quarterback in April.

I just read this as I sit on the train after a particularly crappy day. I have over 3500 songs on my ipod and its on shuffle. As I read this thread Hail to the Redskins played. Pretty neat sign. Good luck in your recovery and thanks for almost a decade of superior play Chris.
