What, that they aren't very talented? Watch out for McCoy and Clausen, then... because they aren't either. Bradford is, but he's not getting past the St. Louis pick.

All I've seen of Locker was that USC game, which I have to admit was impressive. So maybe Locker makes sense if he slips to us (I'm assuming we'll be somewhere around the 10th pick at 5-11). I'm not yet sold, but I might be eventually. As of right now, I think Okung or Williams makes more sense at 10 if they're there, or maybe Greg Hardy if they aren't.

I agree with you in that Clausen is not a good pick. I am not sure about McCoy. There have been mixed reviews about him, but I don't see a glaring deficiency in his game. But regardless, there are Locker, Bradford, Pike, Snead (which I am not high on after watching a couple of his games), and LeFevour that would be solid picks --- except for Snead who I don't generally like because he tends to make a lot of mistakes.

All in all, I think that we will be in the 6-7 range of the draft behind STL, OAK, DET, CLE, KC, TBAY. Out of those teams, only STL and potentially CLE are looking for a QB. OAK has invested in Russell, DET in Stafford, KC is Cassell, TBAY in Freeman. CLE may even say that they have invested in Quinn. So, who knows, maybe we will be behind only STL in the draft for a QB. Now, that doesn't count for trade ups, but it places us in a good position to draft a quality QB.

There are quality OL in the second round. Jansen was a second round pick and we are learning now what a mistake it was to cut him. I still shake my head at the way we treated a true blood redskin.

I'm not sure that Oakland wouldn't go qb. Have you seen Jamarcus Russell? I see your point though. They might not.

Like you said, there is a lot of disagreement about qb's in this draft because there is POTENTIALLY a crapload of them that could come out and draw interest.

OT's generally only last one round, if that. However, it is hard to tell what the qb market will be like at this point. If the team wants to go qb they could have limited choices. However, it looks like it won't be that way.

I'll just say that they better get somebody mobile as hell if they don't plan on addressing the line. Sam Bradford wouldn't last five seconds behind this mess.

There are going to be 3 or 4 quality lineman available in the first round. I think the main lineman are going to be juniors right now but eitherway, there will be plenty of guys to choose from but if I had to look at this team, I would look at bring in mostly lineman, a Dback and a QB. That's it. Use your picks (whatever's left at this point) to stock the team and hope that 2 pan out to be decent starters.

We might be advisable to move south in round one to pick up some additional picks. We could then take a QB and two OL with our first three picks.

No QB we can pick can be effecient behind out present OL. The first three picks must be OL. We must also trade for OL. The idea of picking a saftie is maybe the worse imaginable. We already have three good ones.

McCoy just throws a ton of picks, and that's against sub-par defenses. He looks to me like a Jake Plummer. I don't want to spend a top 10 draft pick on a Jake Plummer.

Snead is terrible. Terrible. I'm particularly biased after my Tide embarassed him Saturday, but he's just incredibly overrated. Clausen plays for Notre Dame and that's the only reason he gets discussed as a first rounder.

Like I said, Locker is the only guy who makes sense to talk about where we'll be (whether that's 7 or 10), and I haven't seen enough of him to make up my mind.

Come second round, I think Tony Pike is still available (remember it won't just be the QBs coming out early this year), and he'll be a better pro than McCoy, Clausen or Snead.

One of my underlying points, which wasn't explicitly stated, was that for next years draft, there is going to be a number of QB options, but the draft is going to be very thin on OLs. Right now, there are only a couple of first round OLs -- Okung (OK State), Williams (OK), and Brown (USC). Okung will be gobbled up in the top 5 -- and out of reach. Williams and Brown (more likely Williams) both could potentially be taken in the top 10 also --- mainly because of the lack of quality OL. But all in all, I would take the 2nd QB on the board over the 3rd or 4th OL on the board.

I hate saying this, but if there truly is no cap next year, Danny could go out and find decent OL in FA. I hate doing this, but if we want a quick fix, that is going to be the only option. I would NOT, however, use picks on this process --- then again with Vinny and Danny making those picks, does it really matter...

QB is not a position you should go after in FA. If I had to pick between the two, I would upgrade the OL via FA over the QB position. Trading for a QB is lethal in that it will cost a ton. There are a group of UFAs coming out at OL such as Jahri Evans, McNeil, Gaither, and Colledge. With Samuels coming back, we would need one of these players and, with a draft pick or two, we could have adequate support.
RIP Sean Taylor. You will be missed.

I think any discussion about the Redskins actually improving in the near future has to start with hiring a real GM (or a Cowher type who has personnel control). If that doesn't happen, we'll probably draft Terrence Cody and Tim Tebow.

Oooohhhh trust me, I agree. We have the worst front office in football (outside of OAK). That is a FACT.

I don't understand why Danny is so stupid. He literally needs to get kicked in the balls.

If the salary cap is dead this year, does that mean restricted free agency would be gone too?

Nope, it actually gets more restricted. Players have to have played 6 years to be free agents. So their won't be many good, young free agents because teams can put in a low tender and keep them. Campbell wouldn't be unrestricted, so he couldn't leave unless the team lets him go.
With the Cardinals reaching the Super Bowl, is Dan Snyder officially the worst owner in the league?

I was just reading about it... sounds like we should get at least a 2nd round pick when some other team offers Jason Campbell more money to be a backup.

...of course, it also guarantees we'll be getting a bunch of old guys to fill in on the line again.

This sounds like fun

I know that we are not a very good team but we are not a very bad team either - we should end up at best with the 9th pick but I predict more likely around 12

we also might see Snyder and his new coach decide that experienced players give the team a better chance at having a better team earlier than waiting for a rookie to be able to contribute - we have a bunch of picks and players that we can package for a major do-over

all this drama and after only 5 weeks - must be driving the apologists and optimists crazy
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

The 12th pick last year had an 8-8 record. Going 6-5 down the stretch would be an outright miracle. They'd have to bring in the Pope to certify it!

They've got a chance this week against K.C., but will likely lose. After that, I can't see them favored in any game the rest of the year.

I was an optimist until our already banged up line was basically depleted. Now, if I could, I would bring in a U-Haul truck, move Vinny's stuff out by myself and then fire him with no problem what-so-ever. I would have no problem telling Danny, "Thank you very much for what you've done for this program. You've made every attempt you could to improve the program. Unfortunately your efforts have not created a winning program and now would be a great time for you to focus on rebuilding the franchise known as Six Flags. We've got it from here and we can't wait to see you on Sunday after the game."

Is there anyone who could say that - please!!!!

If we were smart I guess we would take advantage of the missing salary cap and gut the team... I bet we could get a bunch of late first and second round picks for Moss, Samuels, Hall, Smoot, Randel-el, Portis, Rabach, Haynesworth, Griffin, Carter and Fletcher as long as the other team doesn't need to fit them into a cap structure. Now where are we going to find our Mike Lynn?

Great article JF. Accurate and to the point.
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

Seeing how NOT ONE NFL TEAM would give us even a 3rd rounder for JC straight up last season, I highly doubt that will happen. I actually can guarentee it --- baring JC isn't hit by lightning and magically becomes a good QB. He'll be out of the league before we get anything for him.

Not one team is stupid enough (even the Raiders) to give up a 2nd rounder for a backup QB. That is just insane.

That's an easy thing to be correct on b/c he's probably not going to resign here and will go elsewhere and flourish.

...and I'll say he will be a starter wherever he goes. Maybe not the 1st year. Any player is going to need a rehab year after playing for this team.

This is fast becoming a thread with posts by some that are along the lines of the old quote "you do not know how really stupid someone is until he shows you" - before that you may have just had some doubts

Yeah... I misread the rules. In order to receive draft pick compensation, the Redskins would have to tender JC 110% of his current year salary (3.14 million). That better not happen.

I assume we'll tender him the $1 mill to get the right of first refusal, but that won't entitle us to draft pick compensation. We can potentially leverage the refusal rights to secure a trade, but I can't imagine we'd get better than a 4th.

I don't see a franchise QB coming out of the draft this year. Maybe Bradford or Clausen but I have serious doubts about both of them. We have to use our 1st round pick on the OL and maybe even more picks on both lines in the later rounds.

Just read this report
=============================
Sporting News draft expert Russ Lande and his team of former NFL scouts say there is more bark than bite in the quarterback Class of 2010. As in, there are a lot of big names, but only Sam Bradford is a surefire elite prospect.

1. Sam Bradford, Oklahoma (junior)

Upside: He's a good athlete who throws quickly and accurately. If he can stay healthy, he has the talent to become an elite NFL quarterback.

Downside: He has a slight frame and needs to prove he can stay healthy. He also must adjust to reading defenses and making adjustments and audibles.

Projection: If his shoulder checks out, he could be the first overall pick.

2. Tony Pike, Cincinnati

Upside: He is tall and athletic, with the rocket arm to become a top-flight NFL QB with improved mechanics.

Downside: He never really worked hard until spring of '08, a red flag because NFL quarterbacks without a great work ethic usually flame out.

Projection: He has the talent to be a mid-to-late first-rounder, but first he'll have to answer a lot of questions.

3. Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame (junior)

Upside: He has a quick release, good arm and great touch. His performance, especially in the clutch, has improved dramatically in '09.

Downside: He gambles too much, perhaps because Notre Dame always is in a shootout.

Projection: He currently projects as a mid-to-late first-rounder but could fly up draft boards in the spring.

4. Colt McCoy, Texas

Upside: He has outstanding intangibles and accuracy. He fits best in a West Coast system, a la Jeff Garcia(notes).

Downside: He lacks the arm strength to make all the NFL throws and could end up being nothing more than a backup.

Projection: He's a third-round prospect but is sure to be drafted higher.

5. Tim Tebow, Florida

Upside: He has elite physical tools and could be an elite NFL QB if he can greatly improve his mechanics.

Downside: He has no experience playing in a pro-style offense, which requires making reads while dropping back.

Projection: He's a third-round prospect who likely will go in Round 1 because he'll wow personnel men with his arm strength, athleticism and personality.

Here we go ..

College football has reached its midseason; the NFL is getting there fast. It's time to give serious consideration to where college stars could be headed next season and for pro teams to get sharper focus on the best talent available in the 2010 NFL draft.

Sporting News' War Room Scouts are already deep in evaluation mode. And their latest mock draft has potential players for the first round ready for your examination.....

blah ... blah

16. Washington Redskins: Tony Pike, QB, Cincinnati
With two-time Super Bowl winner Mike Shanahan ready to take over as coach, the first thing he'll want is a quarterback to build around. Pike is the big, strong-armed QB Shanahan prefers.

mnn ... a 16 pick would mean us finishing around 8-8?
