I was fortunate to see the end of our own "Larry Legend's" career and loved the teams that Riggins played with - Portis has his own thing going and I hope he will also be looked back on as one of our better running backs.
this is not that big a deal and as Portis indicated he's a different guy since he first came in and I'm sure when he's done we will not look at all the distractions as much as the contributions - just like we did with Riggins, who was a royal pain in the butt for Gibbs
I'm sure that both will be remembered as great running backs and IMHO this is just a bit more media BS than reality - I think that we will remember them both for what they did on the field and I doubt that anyone will say "but don't you remember, these guys used to not like each other - it was in the Washington Post" - NOT
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
So what? A player can't win a championship by himself. It's not CP's fault that he's been surrounded by sub-par talent during his time in DC. Besides, Trent Dilfer won a SB and Dan Marion didn't. Do you want to use that try and make the argument that Dilfer is better than Marino??
riggofan wrote:Yeah that's one take on it. Another take is that Riggins just isn't afraid to tell it like it is.
And yeah Riggins was running behind the best o-line in the league. Not sure where they were when Riggins was plowing over Don McNeal in Super Bowl XVII.
John Riggins has earned the right to whatever opinions he wants to express. Portis can tell us all how wrong Riggins is after he wins a super bowl.
Riggo didn't win a super bowl by himself, so that arguement in not valid. Timmy Smith has a Superbowl, is he better than CP too? Seems to me that Portis can "tell us how wrong Riggins is" after CP passes his rushing record. JMO
Finally, someone with some intelligence. Thxxx Sch1977.
Anyone who discounts the HOGS in Riggins stats is plain naive. The HOGS were easily in the top 10 of O-Lines EVER, not just Redskins history.
I'm still trying to understand why the animosity towards either one of these great backs. They'vbe both done great things for the Redskins; why hate on either one of 'em?
I don't see anyone hating on either of them, just saying one is better. From my perspective, Riggins is the better back. The reason I say so, is because you have to look at them relative to their times. You can't compare them directly, because that's apples to oranges.
Well, The only person who CP trails is LT in regards to stats. To be quite truthful, if he was on a better team (more balanced offense) his numbers would be even better and even closer if not better than LT's.
Now, I'm def a CP fan and have nothing against Riggo but if you weren't a consistent listener of his show then you don't really know how bad and often he ragged on CP. It got pretty irritating after a while. Now that his arguments didn't hold any water, you could just tell it was a bit personal and came of as being a bit jealous. Kinda like a parent who is jealous of their child because they have oppurtunities that he/she didn't as a kid.
I understand your point about his criticizing CP on the radio, but CP only being behind LT kind of misses my point. Look at it this way, if they had FF back in Riggins' day, he would have been the #1 pick in most drafts. You can't say the same thing about CP. He's probably not even a top five pick. I realize that has a lot to do with the players around them, but that's just the hand they were dealt.
BTW, I have CP on my FF team.

Teams win trophies not QBs or RBs - look at manning, he gets MVP because Tryree makes an impossible catch
We win those Super Bowls no matter who was QB or RB
Portis will win a Super Bowl when he's on a team that plays together

Bottom line is Riggs has been giving CP crap for a looong time and its about time he shuts up with it. The same way we all feel Lavar should give up dogging Snyder, I feel Riggs should get off CP's back. CP is just doing his job and trying to help us win. Who gives a flying flip about who is better??? We're talking about great backs from different decades where football is soooo different now. Geez

I never said that Riggo was better than Portis. It has nothing to do with it either way. You're just making up your own argument.
I said Riggins has won a Super Bowl for the Washington Redskins (and was instrumental in doing it) and so has earned the right to his opinion. Portis is a great player and I'm glad we have him. But he has a long way to go to prove he is half the Redskins that John Riggins still is.
Five years from now, take a look around and see how many Portis jerseys are still in the stands at FedEx. Want to bet you'll see more #44s?

Timmy Smith was instrumental with his 204 yards in the Super Bowl as well. Was he also better than Portis? And by that measure, Barry Sanders never won a Super Bowl, so I guess Timmy Smith was better than both Barry Sanders and Clinton Portis.
...and in five years, we still have a good chance of having CP on our team...

But Timmy Smith wasn't also instrumental in us getting to the SB, which is the difference.

Everybody needs to put this in perspective. These are two grown men living in America. They can say what they want and we don't have to like it. The fact is many of us talk crap on a regular basis...we just don't have the public forum like Riggo does. He has been voicing his opinion and Clinton answered back. Big deal. Clinton stood up for himself like we would hope he would. For us to compare the two really isn't fair to either of them.
Riggo has had some sort of personal vendeta against CP for years. He has ragged on CP everychance he got and I can't remember him ever saying anything good about CP.
CP wouldn't have let LT brake Joey T's leg!
But I would love to see CP make someone miss in the open field, just once in his Redskins career.

But he's not yet at Riggo's level. I'll tell you why: even though The Diesel was also a primadonna with the coaches back in his day, he commanded respect from practically all the guys around him. The Hogs considered him one of his own, as those cool NFL Network retrospectives of past SB champions have chronicled.
Portis always brings it come gameday, but I don't see him being the leader Riggo was. Portis is a lot funnier, though.

So, two talented, Redskin running backs have opinions on each other and people are discussing those positions and which was a better Redskin RB. And you find it odd that on a Redskin message board we would do that? Discuss current and former Redskin player's opinions and state our own? If you don't want to do or read that, why exactly are you here? Seriously.

I agree with you on Riggo. He was a leader on the field, but his behavior and comments were always those of an overgrown kid and I'm sure his teammates knew that back in the day too. It's part of his charm. I like him, I'm not ragging on him. But you need to take his statements as fun rather then overly seriously.
As for Portis, I think he's more of a leader then what you're giving him credit for though. Ironically like Riggins, his public comments sometimes work against him but if you look at his dedication to the Skins and winning I don't see how you can question it.
I'm glad they both were/are Redskins and I hope CP retires with us.

Agreed, Kazoo.
Clinton seems a little too mercurial to me. I think Rock has more leadership qualities (I'm almost sure he's the offensive captain of the team).

hahahaha... Vet that's funny as heck..!!!
Yeah it would be really funny if I ever said that Riggins was BETTER than Clinton Portis. You see that quote above where I wrote: "I never said that Riggo was better than Portis." Guess you were too busy being hilarious and missed that part of my post. You know. The first sentence.
btw If you've ever listened to Riggins and his criticism of Portis, he's never said that Portis isn't a good RB. Or that Riggins thinks he was a better RB than Portis. What he's usually saying about Portis is that he talks too much for a guy on a perpetually 8-8 team. You could say that about alot of Redskins over the years. LaVar Arrington?
Anyway, I don't know or care what record Clinton Portis is about to break. His team has been mediocre for the past twenty years. Start winning playoff games on a regular basis, then you can tell John Riggins and the rest of your critics to shove it. Maybe fans will be wearing your jersey twenty years from now too.
