Problem is...what happens when you're limited touches aren't touchable? Same thing happened to Fred Davis last year...

I know that we have guys that are starters but.... I dunno. Maybe it's just me but things are getting a bit stale. It's not that we need to redo the team, we've been doing very well with consistency but you can't do it to a fault.

Now, am I saying he needs to start? No. BUT We need to give him ample playing time to prove either way. Same thing with Mason.

The only way, IMO, that a committee forms is if there's no standouts. So far, I don't see a standout except for Moss. This would support Marko getting touches, provided he grasps the playbook.

As for Mason (or insert other non Betts RB here), I don't see more than spell touches. CP is our feature back unless we deem a 3rd down specialist out of the others.

This is so true. The coaches are so experienced and skilled as you say at breaking down the tape. It's not a perfect indicator. Desmond Howard sucked on the practice field in College, but he was great on the field. Then he sucked in the pros, at least at WR. Taylor Jacobs was supposedly awesome in practice and blew in games. But players who are running the plays right and getting in practice will get shots on the field and those who do it right will get more shots even if the QB misses them.

Even though they are not perfect, the coaches are very good at analyzing every facet of player's games and they may not perfectly predict who will succeed, they can sure predict who can succeed because they're doing things right. Someone could do things right in preparation and end up not able to catch the ball in games. But anyone who is doing things right will be noticed and get some shots.

I think Mitchell has already solidified that last spot. I'd be willing to bet that, even if he has one catch for three yards in the next game — or zero catches and one INT that can be blamed on him — he'd still be on the final 53. In other words, I think he's secured the spot and even has a little breathing room.

Just a hunch. But I don't see how one bad game will erase everything he's done in camp and in games so far this season. He looks to be our #5.

I think you're right, I hope Zorn feels the same way.
We all know how brittle the WR Corps can be, there will be a few games that Santana's hammy will be sore, Malcolms knee, etc. etc. I am excited about this group of guys and think we will see very good things this year. The depth is there to keep fresh WR's in the game at all times (if all can stay healthy.)
JC has a ton of weapons this year, leaps beyond anybody else in the NFC East IMO.

For the record, I wasn't discussing whether he makes the team or not... I agree, that is pretty much a given... but rather, how he can get the time and touches to "become the next Colston" (not my words)... if, indeed, he has that level of talent.

Personally, I think he will be a contributor... but I have a feeling that our receiver corps, as a group, is about to bust out. He may have the "talent"... but (if I'm right) there just won't be enough balls to pass around. How cool would that be????

Well sure... if you plan to run the ball. But I agree with JansenFan... if you're going to pass inside the ten yard line, the taller receivers, which include Kelly, Thomas and Mitchell, give you a great advantage over smaller and shorter corner backs. I don't think JF is implying that those three should be the only package used, just that their height is advantageous.

And to be quite honest, I've been thinking about this for a while, and it popped up again on the first drive of the Steelers game, but we've used a heavy dose of running inside the ten yard line since Gibbs came back. It seems like every time we get near the goal line, they always want to run the ball in. Because of it, teams stack the line and are ready for it. I'd like to see them spread it out more near the goal line, much like the Colts and the Pats do, and perhaps pass more often in those situations. Don't get me wrong, I like smash-mouth football too, but spreading it out also helps the run game by spreading out the defense and backing them off the line of scrimmage.

I'm not trying to say that Marko is a bad player because he has proven so far that he definently has some skills and he knows how to use them. I'm just saying lets at least wait until we are a couple of weeks into the season before we dub him the next Marquos Colston.

Hah yeah I was thinking that too. Who knows if Zorn will even play this guy? Hopefully he does. Throw him in there for those goal line lobs or something. Did you see Kelly attempt that catch? Looked like a fish out of water man hah.

This is a legitimate issue. Colston got playing time because the Saint's didn't have any depth, and were desperate at the time. While we don't qualify quite yet as receiver wealthy, we don't appear to be desperate. There are a lot of decent receivers who will be competing for a limited number of touches. That works against the 5th receiver. He will get touches... he needs to make them special.

Best advice for Marko: Don't count your touches- make your touches count! (I think to this point he has done exactly that)

The problem with having Moss and ARE down there is that the defense is condensed. JC is a giant and o-linemen are Giants. JC has to thrown up and over the linemen while also throwing down to his midget WR's. So I'm sure he is timid down there because if it's a route in front of the goal-line it's a risky pick cus it might go high. And he's not throwing a jump ball in the back of the endzone to ARE either.... SOOOO.....

Let's all hope that Jim Zorn has grown some NADS and will make use of his inventory this year.

1. NO TINY WR'S WITHIN THE 10 yard line. If so, just 1. Involve Marko Mitchell, who cares if he's a #5. If Moss wants to complain tell him to stop dropping passes.

2. ARE get him away from the PR duties.

3. Fred Davis, use him. Theres no way the best TE in college (2008) shouldn't be playing. Two TE set please.

4. Devon Thomas at KR please. He can split with ROck if he (rock) doesn't get cut. WE need BIG PLAY POTENTIAL.

Sorry for the rant but lets stop playing it safe. These guys are showing promise, let's give them some time to shine.

Listening to "Inside the Redzone" and Vinny C said that They had 4 locks to make the team at the start of the year and "PLAYER" took a 5th spot they were not locked into keeping. Then he said, Marko Mitchell, if he were to be cut, how many teams would put in for waivers. So that's a guy who took a position as opposed to other guys just competing with the others and not separating themselves.

...also, they are more than likely only going to keep 9 lineman and will sign 4 offense and 4 defense to the ps. Mason continued to show what he can do and shows that he's improving.

Yup... it's amazing how much space opens in the interior line if the D has to respect the Fade.
