Rich Eisen: Joe Gibbs is back in the game. Were you surprised when he jumped back in?
Jim Mora Sr.: I was, and the reason I was surprised was because a lot of coaches get back in the game because they're bored and don't like what they're doing; Joe Gibbs owned and ran a NASCAR team. It wasn't like he was bored. So it surprised me a little bit.
Eisen: What adjustment do you think this guy needs to make most? Obviously he's a Hall of Famer.
Mora: Rich, I'll tell you what. He's a great coach and he'll continue to be a great coach. I think the big adjustment for him will be to learn his personnel, obviously, but the personnel in the league and the teams he's going to play against and how they've changed. But as far as coaching, handling players -- Joe's a great leader. He knows how to communicate. He has a bunch of his old coaches back with him. That's going to help him a lot, too; guys that have continued to coach in the National Football League will help him. From that standpoint -- no problem. If you can coach, you can coach. It doesn't matter what level or how long you've been out. Dick Vermeil proved that, and Joe Gibbs will prove it. He'll be successful there.

If you can coach, you can coach. It doesn't matter what level or how long you've been out. Dick Vermeil proved that, and Joe Gibbs will prove it. He'll be successful there.

I saw this before I went into work. He seemed like a pleasant guy, and I like his son too. He had nothing to say but good things about Joe. He basically reitterated what we've all been saying and that is that Joe is going to turn this thing around.

"Playoffs? Did somebody say playoffs...." Ole Jim was definitely more eloquent on NFL access than he has been in past interviews.

Oh, man. Remember that ? He practically screeched the word "playoffs".
I recall thinking that the man was losing his mind.
However, it is clear that all key brain lobes are fully functioning. Having read this article, he's right on the money in my opinion.

Its great to hear someone that the football community respects say that about Joe. I get so tired of hearing the talking heads, and Raven's fans not giving Joe his due credit. I'm sorry but the game just hasn't changed that much in 11 years. Yet, the comment I hear all the time is, "Can Joe Gibbs win in the Free-Agency era?" or the worst one, "Can Joe Gibbs win with the talent that the Redskins have?" Any one who knows anything about Football knows that the Redskins are one of the more talented teams in the league. Now with a hall of fame coach who won over 67% of his games over twelve years....Look Out!

you know chaddukes -stuff like that just makes me laugh all the harder.just look to his record and the way he gets everyone involved.the outside world (media) still doesn,t understand today what joe can really do for a struggling once proud franchise he used to coach.this made it even sweeter for me to see him come back and still be successful in everyway.
just as joe mentioned before you win with the people.

Im a high school assistant coach in new mexico. I'm thinking about writing Joe Gibbs and asking for a job. I coach the hell out of my hogs down here.
Seriously it has to be mostly about personalities and motivation at that level doesn't it?

i have to believe that at the pro level it is about preparation and getting hte players ready. If you have to motivate someone who makes over 6 figures a year to play a game, they shouldn't be playing it. That has been part of the problem the last few years. I think Gibbs will get them prepared and then its up to the players to perform and get up. If they don't get up and don't perform they won't be redskins long. At least we know that Gibbs will bring accountability to the team and that should make everything else better.

Gibbs will do just fine, regardless of his time away from the game. Football is by no means rocket science. Good coaches figure out what to do to score and stop the other team from scoring. Then, they keep on doing it until other coaches figure out how to stop them. The best coaches somehow develop a scheme that other teams have difficulty stopping, even though they see what's coming and the talent level on both teams is fairly equal. I once heard Tom Brady talk about Belichick preparing to face Bill Parcells last year. Belichick said during review of the film that he didn't need to watch it because Parcells had been running the same plays for over 10 years, and he knew exactly what was coming. The Pats won that game, but it was by no means a blowout, and the Pats were hands down the best team in the league last year. So, I suspect that many other coaches can also recognize what Parcells is doing (whether or not they used to be his assistant), but Parcells still wins even though his team has marginal talent. Dick Vermeil is also predictable. I bet we'll even recognize some of Gibbs' old offensive formations next year. With the talent that this team has, Gibbs' scheme should produce very good results. While I'm on the subject, I'm looking forward to the Skins kicking some Cowboy butt next year. And this time, it will be for real and not one of those end of the year games that don't matter.

The Redskins have been running that same old play over, and over, and over again, but Denver has not been able to stop it "Dan Dierdorf" Super Bowl Vs Broncos.

A perfect example of Gibbs organizational skills was when he took that group of what we called "Scabbs" and got us to our first Super Bowl. That group of guys, for those of us who remember, played extremely well, and I think the Redskins Scabb played better than any other group in the NFL that season. To take a bunch of men who may have never seen each other, and mold them into a cohesive unit competent enough to win five straight games on any level speaks volumes.

The Skins will be extremely competitive in the NFC East this year.

While I never had a lot of respect for Jim Mora SR while he was the coach of the Colts! I found more amusement from him then anything else! (I.E. His rant on the Colts going to the Playoffs that one year) What he is saying about Gibbs is right on target! But I guess it doesnt really take a genius to figure out that Joe Gibbs will be able to succeed once again as a coach!

Last year OUR coaching was THIER secret weapon....we start every game with a bullseye on the our QB...other coaches didn't have to do much last year they'll earn the pay in 2004

ed rubert as our qb and lionel vital as our rb.that was something to remember no doubt about it.i beleive one of our receivers was anthony allen -correct me if i,m wrong there.we won them all on the way to the superbowl -i do recall those games.so we will be there to play now.

You're right, and Allen was pretty good too. In fact I believe he still holds the Redskin record for most receiving yards in one game...

I'm glad Mora said this--honestly, the last I remember hearing from him was that fateful "Playoffs?! I'm trying to win a game!!" press conference a few years back. I agree with TC, he's just shown that he's not completely off his rocker.

Lenny P, among others, was initially pessimistic about the return of Gibbs because of how much "the game has changed." It makes me sick to hear that. You know why?

Imagine if Lombardi came back to football (assuming he was still alive today and was about 60 years old or so); and when he came back he brought with him one of the best defensive coordinators in the game, one of the greatest OL coaches of all time, and a great stack of personel. Would they seriously be talking about how Lombardi might not do well because of the salary cap?! And I'll tell you right now that, while even I believe Lombardi was the greatest coach thus far, Gibbs is right up there among those who--30 years from now--will have to be considered along with him.

I submit that the current skepticism, my friends, is just classic anti-Skins (anti-Snyder) bias. We'll let the W-L record prove them wrong.

Our cap situation will be fine. We prolly don't need to make any big splashes for next season. We can pick up a DE in the draft.
