Brennan catches Zorn's eye at Redskins camp

The preseason will be a proving ground for third-string QB Colt Brennan, who has a chance to move up the pecking order at some point if he can prove to be consistent and controlled when he gets what is expected to be a good amount of action in the exhibition season.

Already head coach Jim Zorn has noticed the difference between Brennan’s rookie season and this year. “I think Colt has come a long way,” Zorn said. “I think the way I get on him, he probably doesn’t feel like he’s come a long way, but I’m pushing him and he has come a long way.”

Finding that consistency might not be easy, but Zorn says the second-year QB has become much better at handling the finer points of the game and playing with more control each time out.

“He’s becoming more disciplined,” Zorn said. “When he first got here he was a little bit all over the place. Now he’s being more disciplined in the pocket. He’s starting to read the throws. But he’s a work in progress, and this preseason is going to be very important for him.”

Mechanically speaking, Brennan might look a bit unorthodox, but the coaches are not worried about his arm delivery right now.

“I’m not tinkering with his arm yet at all,” Zorn said. “I’m really trying to get the mental part of his game and really the footwork part of his game. I’m trying to get him to move.”

Brennan is trying to move — up the depth chart. Right now, Todd Collins is the No. 2 option behind starter Jason Campbell, which is likely the way things will be when the season opens, barring an injury. But by the end of the season, when Collins’ deal runs out, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Brennan be the second QB on game days if he can show steady improvement.

The Redskins clearly enter a critical year in terms of their QB structure. Campbell must have a big season to remain in the team’s plans beyond 2009 after watching the organization chase after Jay Cutler and Mark Sanchez. Collins probably is in his final season with the club, and Brennan is an unknown. Fourth-stringer Chase Daniel has a lot to prove to show he’s an NFL quarterback. The preseason will help to sort a few of these things out.

I see some guys on here saying CB isn't ready because he didn't play against any true competition in college. You can't judge him for that...Flacco didn't play any "true" competition in college and (as bad as I hate to give him credit) neither did Romo. (he played his college ball up the road from me @ Eastern Illinois)
The kid can just flat out play the qb positition. To me seeing is believing and I know it was just a few pre-season games last year but he made a believer out of me.
Bottom line is if the kid wasn't any good we wouldn't be talking about him over and over and over again on here.

Whatever happens this year I hope Snyder sticks with Zorn.

JC played in the SEC. That's arguably the best conference in college FB. I expect JC to get off to a good start. The big question is what will happen when he throws his 1st int. Last yr he folded. I don't see Collins as the answer, even short term. He did well for a few games in '07 in an O he knew very well. I think Colt will do better even this year. What he lacks in style, he makes up for in grit. There have been many successful QB's who lacked polish.

A little nugget in that last quote... we can potentially lose both 1st and 2nd string QBs at the end of the year.

I have said this before and in other threads - I think and hope that Brennan can become a good QB in the NFL but he is not going to be our starter this year  IF we have to use Brennan as our starting QB this year we are in a world of trouble and will indeed be looking at a huge amount of changes here - that is not something that would be very good for us at all
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I think he would do an excellent job, if Campbell went down

I don't see him starting this yr, but I hope he moves up to #2 & gets a few reps during the yr.

I just hope we have a quality #2. I don't care who it is as long as they are good, in case we need them.

Actually I'd rather have a total scrub 2nd stringer as long as our #1 is like Rivers, Brady, or P. Manning, good. Hell, even 2/3s as good as Manning would be OK.

Last time we had a legit #1 QB was also the last time we won the division.

I disagree with that mentality. You gotta have depth at all positions. You think people whine now, let JC go down and some scrub come in and suck for 1/2 a year...

I agree with VSF - our best hope for this team is to have Campbell have a great year, Collins to provide a stable/experienced back-up, Brennan to make more progress under Zorn's guidance and Daniels to show promise and make the practice squad.

We are going to learn a lot about the offense this season and should not have too many unreasonable expectations about what we need to do to with many parts of our offense - This is going to be a learning experience all round - we can then evaluate and we can bring in the players we need to continue to get better next year - this is going to take some time but we have to hope for continuity and progress

I hope Campbell can be the good QB some here think but I do feel that he gives us the best chance and despite Brennan's obvious progress, it is going to be difficult to imagine him getting much playing time if this line is not a lot better than we expect - we might be very surprised by how well people play when given the opportunity but I would be very surprised if Brennan has improved that drammatically that Zorn will try him at backup behind this line unless the line looks like it can handle the pass protection duties a lot better than it did.

The QB situation is not great but it is also not the biggest worry we have offensively either
