Colt Brennan

Post by Krisk86 »

Its been a while since I've been on, but I don't understand the QB situation. Why is Brennan in a competition for 3rd string? Even in last years preseason games, when Colt came into the game the offense looked better, and played harder than when Campbell was in. This year, from what I've read, Brennan is doing awsome in training camp. Even in the QB drills he is out performing Campbell. In the drill where the coaches throw pads at the QB Colt kept is poise and threw a perfect pass, Campbell tripped and fell. Today with the trash can targets Campbell was way off and Brennan nailed them. Even in the 11 on 11 practices Campbell was overthrowing passes and Brennan was throwing completions. So what if he throws sidearm passes, if it works it works. I can't wait till next week so we can see Colt in an actual game.

They were talking about the Collins/Brennan situation on ESPN 980 this afternoon and Kevin Sheehan was pretty convinced that Collins was going to be the backup qb this season. Sheehan was saying that Collins is much more comfortable in the offense this year and has been playing well in training camp so far. He implied, without directly saying it, that fans have unrealistic expectations for Brennan at this point.

I think you are focusing on all the negatives on Campbell and none of the positives. I've heard A LOT of good feedback from Campbell this offseason.

I agree w/Krisk, CB deserves a chance. If thigns don't pan out with JC in the first few games I'd like to see Zorn give Brennan a shot. The kid is just flat out exciting to watch.

The flaw in this logic is that if we assume that CB is a starting NFL QB then we must also assume our front office was smarter and more clever than the rest of the league when he was drafted so late. I am not ready to make that assumption.

Drafted late? Sixth round 186th overall, yeah late, but up remember the 6th round 199th overall pick in the 2000 Draft.............TOM BRADY, yeah I'm sorry he's not much of an NFL QB either.

Sorry bro, its not very often you get a Brady the way he got drafted. I like Colt but I think the young kid would be destroyed out there ahead of Collins.. and I KNOW your not saying put Colt ahead of JC. With our OLine not being that good, blame it on injuries or just lack of talent, you choose.. we need a veteran QB back there to make more of experienced player type decisions than a young buck gun slinger who never really faced any kind of hard college defenses to begin with.

Heck bro, if you want Colt that bad, I'd skip him for Chase. Chase may have less yards and less td's in college but for their last season in college Chase played Nebraska- Ok. St.- Texas- Baylor- Kansas & Kansas St.- Oklahoma.. Colt played against LA Tech- Idaho- Boise St.- Nevada- Washington- Utah St.- Fresno St. Honestly Boise St. was good then but not so much Utah St. back then. Missouri by the way ended that year with 4 losses, 2 of them butt whippings by Oklahoma and Texas.

Anyways bro, I like the kid but putting him back there behind that Oline is suicide.

From all reports, the starting QB is going to be Campbell and unless he has a really bad camp and pre-season, he is going to be given every chance to show that he is a good QB. I would be really shocked if Campbell is not the starter here all season. Collins is the #2 QB and again I think Zorn will be reluctant to go with either Brennan or Daniels because of their relative inexperience. Brennan and Daniels are going to have to accept that and Zorn has already said he's only going to have 3 QBs on the roster so I would assume that one of them is headed to the practice squad unless they show they cannot make it at this level.

I think Brennan might have the edge over Daniels but I cannot imagine Zorn not thinking that Collins is the better back-up to Campbell - most coaches prefer their back-up QB to have at least some NFL experience or have been at this level for more than a year or 2

Hopefully a lot of good things happen with this offense this year so we can address some of our offensive concerns next year. If this team has offensive problems this year, I personally do not think that will be because of Campbell - I may not think he's a great QB but I also do not think that he was the main reason why we did not have a very good offense last year.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I liked CB in preseason last year. When he got in, things happened. Granted, it was mostly scrubs against scrubs.

I like JC but last year 2nd half of the season he got too conservative and the offense stagnated. There were many reasons for that - the o-line, new system, all that the QB was being asked to do. Most of that has been addressed - but I'm still concerned about the o-line.

CB made plays happen - he scramble and bought time and made plays.

JC has not shown that. We need a QB that can buy time and make something out of nothng when things break down. Yes he may not be successful all the time, but needs to be more often than not. JC is too predictable if things break down - throw it away or tuck and drop. If he was less predictible, D's would have to respect that and prepare for that.

Hey Rick, don't forget Zorn said he called more conservative plays last half of the season (I think he said cause of injured OL). I agree with you though, that OL isn't up to par yet.

I recall reading that Daniel's play suffered after throwing an int. Sound familiar? I think Colt has the right temperment to start at CB.

I agree - it's not all on Campbell last year. The oline problems meant that the only effective running plays were to the left, so the defense could stack that way without worrying about a big gain on the right. In addition, they only had to worry about Moss and Cooley in the passing game, so they'd double and triple team them. The poor oline play and the lack of an explosive threat at the second WR really allowed defenses to operate with a huge advantage against essentially a hamstrung offense. Give Campbell better Oline play and a real #2 receiver, and watch how much things improve.

I think Krisk86 is half right. Colt Brennan did look freaking awesome playing in the insanely competitive second halves of several preseason games last year.

However, I personally think we need to take another look at Danny Wuerfel. I think we all remember that he put up 270 yards and 3 TDs against San Fran a few years ago in the preseason. How can this guy NOT be on an NFL right now????

I don't really think you mean't that  maybe because most people that make the decisions about who can play in this league think that Wuerffel = "awful"

Slamming Colt b/c he hasn't gotten a chance to prove anything in regular season doesn't prove anything. As I've said numerous times, he's shown up when asked. That's all we DO have proof of...

Very true. However, calling for him to potentially replace JC at this point is also a bit premature. I think that Zorn having him battle with Chase for the 3rd string qb spot speaks to the fact that Colt was very raw when he came in and needs more time to develop.

Zorn is going to make sure he sees all he needs to from both Brennan and Daniels - that is primarily what happens at training camp, players get an opportunity to show what they're capable of and coaches figure out who best helps the team

Wonder what would have happened if the Falcons had let Matt Ryan compete for 3rd string with no chance of starting or if the Ravens had done the same with Flacco. I'm getting this from last years preseason games, but when Brennan came out the tempo picked up and team looked awsome. They just look lost whenever Campbell is under center. Maybe my dislike of Campbell is steming from watching him beat my Hokies in the bowl game a few years back, but still I can't wait to see what Colt can do.

I don't think Colt was anwhere near them in the draft. Additionally, he came off of hip surgery and was behind in the playbook as I recall. For what he did do, he looked good, I will admit, but comparing him to Flacco or Ryan is absurd. Brady didn't come in and compete, either, he was a replacement for an injured Bledsoe (I think that's who it was).

Had we drafted Colt with the 3rd or 18th overall pick, maybe this would make sense. But Colt was taken 186th overall. There's a reason he was taken there and not 3rd.

Are you saying that the reason Erik Ainge, Josh Johnson, Dennis Dixon, John David Booty, Kevin O'Connell, Chad Henne, and Brian Brohm (the QBs drafted between Flacco and Colt) aren't ProBowlers is because their teams didn't give them a chance to start? What were Green Bay, New England, and Pittsburgh thinking!? ;)

If CB had come in and stunk the place out when he was given his ' garbage time' opportunities last pre-season i could understand why some fans are down on him. Hey, but he didn't - he came in and showed a little something ( heart, temperament, leadership) so i for one hope that this lad may develop into something for us down the line. Yes there was a reason he was drafted late ( off field issues, dinged up) but maybe, just maybe he is one of those diamonds we all keep talking about. I reckon he gets 3rd QB - Zorn won't make him backup yet!! He doesn't cost a lot, he shows promise and i hope that sometime ( maybe not this season) he gets the chance to show what he is about.

It'll be great if JC comes out and tears it up this season (personally I don't think that will happen and it'll be up to Collins to salvage our season) and prove guys like me wrong. No matter what kind of season he has I don't think he'll be in the Burgandy and Gold next year.
I see some guys on here saying CB isn't ready because he didn't play against any true competition in college. You can't judge him for that...Flacco didn't play any "true" competition in college and (as bad as I hate to give him credit) neither did Romo. (he played his college ball up the road from me @ Eastern Illinois)
The kid can just flat out play the qb positition. To me seeing is believing and I know it was just a few pre-season games last year but he made a believer out of me.
Bottom line is if the kid wasn't any good we wouldn't be talking about him over and over and over again on here.

Whatever happens this year I hope Snyder sticks with Zorn.
