Kicker?

Post by Esquirekj »

Hello all,

It has been a while since my last post.
I have a major concern (or two) heading into this season. The kicker. Sean Suisham is inconsistent at best. Is anyone else concerned? I rarely see this mentioned at all by the national 'Skins bashing media or on the blogs.
It was nice to see that we finally brought in a decent above average punter in Smith. He will do a good job with the field position battles.
With our sick defense (and it will be sick), the "Skins are likely to be in many close games as JC and the offense get in sync, especially early on in the season in my opinion. Why not go spend on a solid kicker (who can also kickoff deep) as kickers are frequently the deciding factor between a win or loss?
Let me know what the Redskins Nation thinks...

I don't see where you are coming from when you say a "sick defense." The defense is the teams strongest component and only got stronger with the off-season acquisitions. As for Suisham, I am not that concerned.

I agree Suisham may not be the best option out there. The question is who is available that is better?

Sick meaning awesome not sick meaning sick.

Anyhow, there might not be anyone out there now but I am sure a kicker could have been picked up earlier during free agency. Not sure about Raynor either...
Maybe Suisham will get better and improve on his kickoffs...
Let's hope he has plenty of opportunities.

Didn't we bring in another kicker to compete with Swish 'em?

Dave Rayner is still on the roster I believe.
He has bounced around the league since being drafted by the Colts a few years ago.
I guess we'll have to ride with Sean...

Graham Gano (K)
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 194
College: Florida State
Conference: ACC
Hometown: Pensacola, FL
High School: Tate HS
View Combine Page >>

Choose Specialists Overview
Moved up NFL draft boards with a surprising first season as the Seminoles' kicker in 2008. Gano won the Lou Groza Award and garnered first-team all-ACC honors after making 24-of-26 field goal attempts -- including 5-of-7 of 50 yards or longer. Gano actually missed the first two games of his senior season after having surgery in August on a torn right meniscus. He ended the season as the team's triple-threat specialist, re-gaining punting and kickoff duties as the season progressed. Honorable mention all-ACC as a punter in 2007 with a 43.4-yard average overall; he averaged 42.7 yards a boot and placed the ball well after returning from injury. Gano finished a dream season by winning the Champs Sports Bowl MVP award after pinning Wisconsin deep multiple times. Had an arm span of 30 3/8 inches and a hand span of 7 7/8 inches at the combine.

I haven't seen that he signed with anybody. He has 60+ yd range. He can kick field goals, kick off & punt.

I have confidence that Cerrato's guys are on top of this - there is no way we should not have a kicker that can consistently put the ball into the end zone on kick-offs - now, we all know we are going to be kicking off a lot this year with our new high scoring offense so Cerrato better produce a decent kicker.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

It's definitely a concern because Suisham was statistically the worst kicker in the NFL last season. He also missed more field goals, ten, than any other kicker in the league last year. He is decent from less than 40 yards, but from 40 yards or more he is garbage, missing eight such kicks last year. His kickoffs also leave a lot to be desired.

I agree his kickoffs are slacking. I am not too concerned yet about his field goal kicking. Lets wait for at least 2 bad years in a row for field goal kicking. Even Mayk Mosely had his slump years.

Actually he has had two bad years. In 2007 he was 21st in the NFL in field goal percentage and in 2008 he was 32nd. Neither one of the those seasons was good and last year was downright awful. Those are his only two full NFL seasons to date so based on his body of work so far the guy has performed as a below average NFL kicker. It would be absurd to go into this season with a kicker that was statistically the WORST in the league last season.

Why do we need a kicker at all? Just revive the old sandlot "P-for-K" rule... problem solved.

Go for it on every fourth and go for two after every score. Problem solved.
