Redskins 8 Million under the cap

Post by SnyderSucks »

Per PFT, the Redskins were $7.1 million under before the space added this week, so they are now roughly $8 million under the cap. They will carry some into the regular season for injuries, say $2.5 million. Looking at last years contract, they will need about $2.5 million for Orakpo. The other rookies won't add to the cap as they will make essentially the minimum, so the players currently counting towards the cap that they will replace will make as much or more. So that leaves about $3 million available to spend.

What do you guys think they should do? Sign a right tackle? Levi Jones, Mark Tausher, and Kwame Harris are available. Sign a depth LB? Derrick Brooks, Rocky Boiman, and Morlan Greenwood are available. Wait for training camp to see who gets injured or who doesn't play well?

I would wait for training camp unless there is someone who could start that I am missing. That would give some flexibility in case of injury and give the people already there like Williams a chance to show if they are ready.
With the Cardinals reaching the Super Bowl, is Dan Snyder officially the worst owner in the league?

are we still able to save $ by cutting player? Agreed about Rodgers, having two young, outstanding cover corners locked up is somewhat of a premium in this league. Anyone remember any names from the past that still hurt??? I'll go first, Ade Jimoh!!!

What are we looking for here? Players that left Washington to have great years like Walt Harris and Antonio Pierce?

Or players who signed big contracts and were terrible like Deion Sanders, Adam Archuletta, and Brandon Lloyd?

:hmm: Wait a minute...

You guys bash Snyder for spending too much of the cap on free agents, but as soon as you hear there's $8 million available, you start your Christmas list of desires and plot a course to spend that available money.

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!?!?!?!? ](*,)

I would hang on to the money for the time being. I don't see anyone out there who would be that big an upgrade.

I don't think anyone has a problem with signing a potential starter at a reasonable price. The fact that Danny will spend is good, and would be really good if this was Major League Baseball. I also must commend the way they work around the cap, its rather remarkable. The only real problem is when he overpays for guys like El or signs old people. As far as this situation goes though, I think Danny has the green light.

Now before everyone bites my head off I would NOT extend Rogers YET. What if Barnes comes and plays unbelievable. What if Rogers comes in and plays well again but cant catch the ball. Dont get me wrong I really like Rogers, but we have 3 young corners (Barnes still needs to prove himself though). If Barnes comes out and struggles like Tryon last year then you start thnking about a extension.....but if he tears it up there is no reason to pay Rogers a ton of money when we have Barnes locked up for a while (when he signs).

With the extra money I would try to solitify the RT position. Either through trade or FA but dont sign a FA who is not an upgrade at the position.

I don't see a 3rd round pick coming in and playing better corner THIS YEAR than Rogers will. Regardless of that fact, we need 3 starting caliber corners on the roster. We've had a problem with CB injuries as of late and depth is definitely a good thing to have at CB.

I say wait until mid season to lock up Rogers. Lets get some of the "contract year performances" from him first and then lock him up.

You run the risk of him running up his own price. I wouldn't want that to be a distraction during the year and would prefer to get it out of the way before the season starts. He's performed better and better by the year; I don't see why this year won't follow the trend.

True that you run the risk of him running up his asking price, but hopefully he would learn how to catch better if big money is on the line. I mean he should have plenty of opportunities this year if our pass rush performs up to the hype. I see it is a catch 22 situation (no pun intended).

So the only thing you're looking for is contract year motivation? I would rather have the consistancy and improvement he currently has than the type of character it takes to be motivated to go above and byond solely because it's a contract year.

By your illustration, next year, after he gets his contract, he should regress b/c it's no longer motivated by potential contract salary negotiations?

Contract year motivation is not entirely what I am looking for, but it is a part of my "performance theory." I am hoping the same happens for Campbell as he will perform his best in his contract year. I am not saying that CR should regress after getting the big contract, but just in my observations, players tend to put a little more umph into what they are doing when a new contract is on the line. This is, after all, professional sports and everyone wants a piece of the cash pie. After he gets his *BIG* contract, I would hope that he wants to prove why he worth all of the money given to him.

So in theory, play crazy out of the mind football to get the contract and then play crazy out of the mind football to prove you are worth the contract. I am hoping that is what Haynesworth does this year and if it works for him then it can work for other players.
