Gruden replaces Tony K. on ESPN

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

Gruden replaces Tony K. on ESPN

Post by SkinsJock »

Now this is going to be very interesting - I like Jon and I think he will bring a lot of insight to MNF

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I watched Gruden during the draft and I liked him. I think with some more face time, he'll smooth out and he'll get better. I didn't like Mr K.

Almost anyone would be better than Tony K.

IMO he was the second worst NFL broadcaster only behind Bryant Gumble.

At least Bryant stayed with the game...even if he had absolutely no idea what he was broadcasting about.

Gruden can't be much worse.

Profootballtalk.com is saying Gruden had a deal in place with NFLN to do color commentary. Apprently all that was left was the signature until ESPN came calling.

When I saw Gruden doing the Draft show, I initially rolled my eyes, thinking, here we go... another tedious, unemployed coach, stinking the place up with boring reparte. Wrong. He was great, and clearly had fun.

I think this is a great call.

Dennis Miller was by far the worst. Kornheiser was out of his element, though. Monday Night Football isn't supposed to be funny, which is why those types fail. Madden is funny, but at least he had something to offer football-wise, no matter how simplistic it may have been. Actually, his simplistic analysis was the thing that was so funny.

Well, it's about time that Tony K is gone. I really enjoyed Listening to Gruden during the draft.

I never was able to see him cause of my age but his voice always seemed cool to me. I have no idea about his knowledge of the game though, didn't he use to do baseball or something like that too?

ah, yes...

Howard "that little monkey can run" Cosell...

Whom here knows who he was referring to in that quote? (Sorry... You don't count, Welch)

Anyone but Cosell would have been fired.

Hasn't that been proven, time and again, that it wasn't a racial slur?

I've seen the old film of Cosell. I always liked his style. He had a command of the language. Yeah, he was an egotist and a pompous ass; but damned if he couldn't call a sporting event.
Yes, Virgina, you can be a "real fan" and protest against the front office.

Cosell may have called boxing events ("Down goes Frazier, down goes Frazier"), but, to my knowledge, he never "called" a football game. He provided "color". They are not the same thing. What he provided was dressing to improve ratings. It had nothing to do with presenting quality broadcast. His role was purely to insult Merideth, and improve ratings.

Frankly, I could care less what his "intent" was in the above. How do you prove (or disprove) Howard's intent? What I know is that he said it, and others would have been fired and piloried for it.

Bottom line is, no matter what his intent, it was an incredibly stupid thing to say, especially in light of the times (ask Jimmy the Greek if he feels that he got a fair shake).

Are we talking about Kornheiser?

If so I actually like Kornheiser and Wilbon. I think they have good chemistry and offer a different type of perspective. I actually get tired of hearing the pros talk about football all the time. I like having an outsider or non football pro give there point of view. Even though I think Kornheiser is a former Redskin?
I also liked Woody Paige and Skip Bayless when they did that little show together. It is all entertainment to me when I turn on the tube. We have plenty of guys who get the xs and os. So that is why I like the alternative perspective every now and then.

Well, anyway, as far as Kornheiser goes, I wasn't a huge fan of his in the booth; though I do like watching PTI from time to time.
