Bridges might be next Redskin By David Elfin on May 3, 2009
The Redskins are on the verge of signing guard Jeremy Bridges, one of the 28 players who came to this weekend's minicamp on a tryout basis.
The 6-foot-4, 326-pound Bridges has played in 62 games, starting 39, for the Arizona Cardinals and the Carolina Panthers. Coach Jim Zorn said that Bridges made the biggest impression and would be signed if he passed his physical today.
Bridges, 29, received a 60-day suspended sentence in 2007, a year of unsupervised probation, 60 hours of community service and was fined $500 for pointing a gun at a stripper. The woman had been involved in a dispute outside the Charlotte club with one of his friends. Bridges admitted having the gun but said he didn't point it at the woman.
The Panthers suspended Bridges for the first two games of that season for conduct detrimental to the team.
The Redskins have agreed to terms on a deal with veteran offensive lineman Jeremy Bridges, Coach Jim Zorn said, and will sign him tonight, pending the results of a physical. Zorn also said that the team could sign either Kelly Washington or D.J. Hackett, veteran wide receivers who were brought in for tryouts.
Bridges has started in the past; his footwork was particularly impressive and the team hopes he could make a push at the unsettled starting right tackle spot. He has played for Philadelphia, Arizona and Carolina, where he had legal issues stemming from two arrests in less than two years.
Posted at 12:04 PM ET, 05/ 3/2009 Skins Offer Deals to Washington, Hackett (Updated)
The Redskins have offered contracts to veteran free agent wide receivers Kelley Washington and D.J. Hackett, who participated in minicamp this weekend, a league source said. Washington is expected to decide on the Redskins' offer after visiting the Baltimore Ravens this week. Hackett was expected to take a physical this afternoon and planned to sign with the team today, a league source said.
This all sounds pretty good, as long as Bridges doesn't shoot somebody. If Hackett and Kelly get injured at different times there may actually be one receiver on the field every game that can catch. Washington would open things up a bit.
I wonder if the addition of free agent receivers means the end of James Thrash in Washington.
Kelly Washington and D.J. Hackett are better IMO. Also, I wonder if it's one deal for either one. Whoever signs first gets the contract, or maybe we take them into the pre-season and see what's what?
Anyway, that would make:
Santana Moss
Antwaan Randle El
Devin Thomas
Malcolm Kelly
James Thrash
Kelly Washington
D.J. Hackett
I wonder how many WR's we'll carry?
Plus we drafted Marco Mitchell and 3 or 4 guys in camp too that are rookies or practice squad guys.

I don't like this signing.

How does adding a guy with character issues make our Redskins better?? We have plenty of backups for our OL, we are looking fro quality starters and Bridges does not appear to be starting quality. Our front office seems to think that two backups equal a starter...I tend to disagree

He is just a player in camp. I would be shocked if he got a 6 figure signing bonus or any at all for that matter.
Some need to study what "Offseason Bodies" mean in the Offseason. He won't be here during the regular season and if he is, he worked his butt off for a spot. And good for him.
>>It looks like the "Owner/Management" team is working hard to fill the holes and make our Redskins a better team. We should give them some credit.<<
Ding-ding-ding. We have a winner.
Everyone was bitching and moaning because we hadn't addressed OL in the draft, and now they're bitching because we brought in a player the coaches like, who's been a starter in the league, but isn't a Boy Scout.
I'm not downplaying the seriousness of what Bridges apparently did, but the fact remains that if he's not in jail he's entitled to make a living. If he screws up again, get rid of him. But why punish him more than the law requires? More importantly, why punish yourself by denying the team a player who might fill a critical need?
The fact is, the Redskins need to shore up the OL, but they didn't have enough draft picks or cap space to do so conventionally, so the front office is taking low-risk chances on players who've been out of the game and weigh over 400 pounds or who have a police record. None of these moves may work out, but if they don't, at least it didn't cost you much.
I'm actually excited about the idea of Mike Williams, Randy Thomas, and Bridges at the RG, RT spots in no particular order. Mike Williams would make the Oline 25inches longer if he were at RG, and he and Bridges would add some much needed girth, if they pan out

Currently we have Jon Jansen at RT and a hole at G. Everyone complained that the O-line wasn't addressed, yet you complain when they bring in someone you know little to nothing about. Bridges plays both "positions of need" on the O-line. As far as a starter goes who knows but for the record he has started more games in the last three years than Jansen, and played more then him over the last five.

His addition is good news for Clinton Portis owners, but he'll have to keep his nose clean in D.C. after being arrested twice in the past year. Aging veteran Jon Jansen will begin picking up snaps at guard and center in anticipation of a reserve role.
He's also four years younger than Jansen and has a half a decade more experience than Heyer
What could it hurt?

When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hold on....
Haynesworth stepped on a guy with cleats (sp) and no one cares about that but so quick to judge a guy cause he had a gun in a club. Least he didn't do a Plaxico.. plus we have no idea what really happened in that club to begin with.
Bottom line, if he can play good, we should give him a go.

Where do you see a hole at G?

What hole at Guard? Left or right? Because if you ask me Randy Thomas is just as godd, if not better than Double D.
I would agree that we need an upgrade at RT, but if you remeber correctly when the right side was helthy CP was leading the league in rushing (by a wide margin) and JC was being talked about as a MVP canidate.
We need a back up and a starter to play as well as Jansen and Thomas did for the firrst eight games.
Moss getting nicked hurt the O a lot!!! Once, he wasn't 100% everyteam played with eight or 9 in the box against us. Having a better OL won't change that.

Or Heyer and Thomas did, anyway.
Heyer took CoOley out of the passing game. Let's hope the replacement plays as good as Heyer and CoOley did.
I don't really agree with that piece of conventional wisdom. Yes, CC did stay in to block on occasion, but he had a franchise best 83 catches last year, so obviously he was a huge part of the passing game. And yes, I do realize that some were dump-offs after he had released a rusher, but that is a TE's primary role.

Heyer's big 'debut' was two years ago, which is why everyone was raving about him last year. Jansen played most of the year last year....Heyer didn't, which allowed ey to actually play receiving TE.

I think last year eys blocking was much improved in part because of our line did need him to block. He is becoming a better TE because of it.

I'm well aware of Heyer's history; I watch the games with his mother. Stephon started 7 games last year to Jansen's 11, and they both needed help. My point is that CC was still a big part of the passing game, regardless of the perceptions around here. And Heyer is a better pass blocker than Jansen at this point in their careers, so if anything, CC would have needed to stay in on passing downs more when JJ was in the game than with SH.
