Yeah, I like the pick. I think we badly need a linebacker and an offensive tackle but Barnes was the best player left. This is a good move, but I wonder if it's maybe a case of them having some faith in the former 1st rounders they picked up like Thomas and Williams.

The only thing I'll say is that there is decent OT depth in the draft if they want to pick up a 4th or even use their fifth. Although Meredith is good, and they skipped on him.

Barnes is blessed with a good enough combination of size and athleticism to enjoy success in the NFL despite only one full season as a D-I starter. Barnes broke out as a junior, snatching four interceptions and breaking up nine passes in starting all 13 games. Good height. ... Long arms which he uses well to shield the receiver from the ball. ... Natural hands for the interception. ... Good straight-line speed. ... Good leaping ability. ... Cognizant zone defender who can close on the ball. ... Generally a reliable open-field tackler. ... Flashes big-hitting ability.

I think we should have targeted more of an immediate starting prospect. I think OLB or O-Line should have priority

I guess you can never have too many corners. If somebody gets hurt he'll probably be our third corner.

I agree, Brad. There's still some decent o-line prospects left to be had.

But after some thought, I agree with Jake in that we really needed depth at the CB position. As the roster currently stands, we have more o-line depth than defensive back depth.

I like this pick. At 6ft, he would be the tallest of all our CBs. We need big guys to go against the larger WR in the league.

I don''t think it is a bad pick. Its not that i don't like Barnes its just that he will be 4th or 5th CB on the team. thats not great.

There were still a few options at OT and LB that should have been addressed. The 5th round won't give us any real chance of getting a starter at LB- which means that H.B. Blades/Thomas/Wilson by committee

Yes, if he's better CB depth then OL depth then that's the thing to do. You don't get better by drafting for need when you're passing on players with more skill. You get mediocre that way. I like the part where he has good hands for interceptions.

Yea, always gotta have corners. We don't have a legit RT at this point though. It's frustrating.

Maybe they know something about Mike Williams? I doubt it, but who knows/

I mean you have to have talent to be picked in the first round, so if Williams has a renewed work ethic (reported as a first in the morning last to leave at night kind of guy now) then maybe we're onto something.

Maybe SLB and RT aren't as bad as I thought, with Jansen, Williams and Heyer in the rotation it might not be the worst thing in the world. We definitely need depth at LB but if Marcus Washington or some other vet comes in we might be okay.

I'm fine with them taking the player at the top of their board for the rest of the day.

Can't you say that about every single pick in the draft?

Another player to look out for is C Edwin Williams from Maryland. Apparently the team likes him and he can play multiple interior line spots.

I'd rather take a chance on a fresh college kid than a fat guy thats been out of football for three years.

I hope they aren't going to be lazy and reach for Maryland kids all day. They need to do their due diligence and not just rely on local word of mouth.

I was talking about Michael Williams who we brought in to compete at Tackle.

I was reading JLC's Redskins Insider and he was talking a lot about Orakpo playing strong side LB. (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/redski ... eason.html) I don't really like that idea. Orakpo could add some bulk I think and play RDE which we need... then again could he drop weight and gain the fluidity to play LB? I don't like it, it seems like 4-3 defensive end is his best position, I don't want to jerk him around too much.

Also on Redskins.com Matt Terl has a nice post about Barnes (http://blog.redskins.com/2009/04/26/pic ... #continued though I wonder why he picked the clip that clearly shows Jahvid Best puking)

Shows his combine video, kind of cool.

brad7686 wrote:He's a zone coverage guy, quick feet, good ball skills, sure tackler. Can't switch directions all that well, so won't be good in man coverage i wouldn't think.

from ESPN Insider:

Barnes possesses adequate size and is smooth in his hips, which allows him to change directions quickly. The one thing we are really impressed with is Barnes' ability to track and play the ball. However, Barnes needs to improve his physicality in run support.

Which side is LDE and RDE, like if I'm the qb staring into our defense is Andre Carter the LDE and Phillip Daniels the RDE? I like Orakpo at strongside LB until 3rd down then turn him loose.

The only question will be his cover skills at LB, which will probably be a concern.
