Hey all,
Does anyone have a clue about the first steps to shipping a car to Asia or another country? Is it even worth the money, time, and effort? Is it cheaper just to buy a used car in the country (once you have arrived)???
Just a random question as I plan on living abroad part time....

You're going to live as a broad in Asia? Hey, I'm not judging. Matter of fact, if you've got a good look to you, you might never need to drive yourself again.
It's done every day out of Baltimore and in Virginia, too. One man I know, an Afghani, buys used cars, taxis and limos, ships them overseas once a month and sells them for "top dollar" wherever they end up. He won't tell me the particulars, and I've known him for 16 years. Crafty, those Afghans. I know this. If the cost was more than he would recoup, he wouldn't touch it.

I was going to say what DE said. I was stationed in Okinawa, and I got a sweet Honda Prelude for 1000 bucks. It had a nice sound system (car tech was way ahead of the states when I was there, ( my buddy had an RX-7 with a full TV, DVD, CD, mini-disc in dash). Depending on where you are going and how long you plan to be there, I'd just grab something when you get there.

You can probably bet that you'd do better buying a car there, especially if you are living in a country where the cars are built. If Korea, Japan or China, for example, I can't imagine that you'd be better off bringing your car with you.

True story...when I first got to Okinawa one of our young troops got booted out...he had to get rid of his car before he could out process. HE came into to work and ask for $100 I had $48 on me..he took it...It wasn't a great car...I drove it until the JCI ran out (8 months) and sold it to a junk yards for $50!!

Nice idea guys.... Yeah, I own several cars, 15+years old. They are just weekend tinker toys but they work. I was thinking about shipping to the Philippines since we have some property there.
But like you all said, it's probably cheaper and wiser to buy a ride on the islands..... CHEERS....!!!

When we were at Fort Hood, a Soldier my wife worked with had bought a beautiful BMW while in Germany off of a friend of his for a similar price for the exact same reason.
