i am going to post something you guys are not going to like. back in the day when norve was the coach me and my son went to a leukemia event at redskin park lots of players were there they had just finished a walkthrough practice. there were a number of terminally ill children there. mike wetbrook hugged my son knelt down in the mud in his sweatsuit and brian mitchell threw with him and hugged him. then daryl green comes up he is carrying a box of things and people go to him to get an autograph and he says he doesnt have time and walks through everyone and gets in his car and leaves!!! i used to adore him for years untill i saw him do that. as far as im concerned he has no class and wish i had that on tape. brian westbrook had more class than he did as far as im concerned. remeber most of those kids didnt make it

Also darryl has never been that kind of guy. He is one of the hardest autographs to get. True it would have been nice of him to show your son some attention, but maybe he had something to do. Because he didnt stop and say hello dosent mean he has no class, probaly busy. He played his heart out for this team and this city for 20 years. Thats all I could ever ask a football player to do.

Yeah I guess everyone's prespectives of celebrities is based on personal experience. I had none with Darrell but I keep hearing stories like yours. Not good!

i dont care if your busy or not if you dont have time for a kind word or a smile or to give a child who is dying some love you are nothing and yes to me that is no class if you saw that you would know kids in wheelchairs with no hair in pain and i cant even describe to you the despair your to busy?????? hes a punk in my eyes

I wasnt there, and if your son has luekemia im sorry to here that. All im saying is that if a guy like darryl gives his heart and soul to a team for so many years, and never once did you here him getting in any kind of trouble off the field, thats all I can ask for from a football player on the redskins. He should have stopped and said hello, but to say the guy has no class becuase of that is a little steep. I'm sure for you it touched a much deeper nerve becuase of your sons condition, but if every player on the redskins played like darryl green i would be in heaven.

Dont you have any compassion? These children had leukemia, a terminal illness in many cases. When you are a pro athlete, you take on a certain obligation to the community and the fans. It is beyond the realm of human deceny to simply walk by children who are dying, especially when said children look up to you and want your autograph. It would have taken 10 seconds for him to sign an autograph, and he would have touched the life of a child. The fact that he didn't shows that he cares little for others, a phenomena which unfortunately plagues many athletes. They have millions of dollars, so they are above the fans and dont owe them anything. As for you talking about how darryl green played well for 20 years, that does not show character. The fact that he played well does not make him a good person, it makes him an athlete doing what he is paid to do. It is true that he helped out team immensely, but this has nothing to do with his personality or character.

Have you tried to contact him shortly after that lack of exchange. I'm certain that if he knew the magnitude of you and your sons pain, he would have absolutely made an attempt at apologies and to rectify. I'm not trying to make excuses for him, but this is the very reason I try not to overemphasize the importance of stars or athletes to my kids. They will always in some shape and form let you down. But back on topic, knowing where this guy stands spiritually, he's not the jerk your making him out to be. Just my 2 cents

my point was vpar that he showed his character to me on the field. HE SHOULD HAVE STOPPED AND SAID HELLO. All I was trying to say was that he conducted himself on the field the right way, thats why he has my respect.

in response to his spirituality i dont know but unless he was temp blind he saw kids bald with tubes out mouth and noses on crutches ect how could he not know they were sick HE WALKED THROUGH THEM

If he did that, absolutely inexcusable. Again, did you try to contact him to explain the magnitude of his actions or lack thereof?

That's not the first time I've heard something like that about D. Green. It's a shame. Just taking 10-15 seconds away from his busy life? Not to much to ask, in my opinion.

I am not one to usually post; however, I believe that nobody has a right to proclaim that anyone is classless unless they known the entire situation. I agree that it may not seem to be the appropriate action for a respected individual to walk through any group of ill people, let alone children, without taking the time to acknowledge them. Nonetheless, nobody here has any idea as to what it was that D. Green had to do or really any insights to himself as a person at all. Some people simply find it very difficult to be around people who are sick - some people have a very hard time even going within hospitals to visit those they love let alone strangers. Just because a person does not act as you wish them too gives you a personal "right" to disapprove but certainly is, in and upon itself, no reason to broadly classify the manner in which they live/lead their life - especially for no apparent reason.

Should one brief interaction really outweight the image that D. Green has portrayed of himself and the Redskin organization for the past 20 years. Certainly not especially being aware of the fact that he has dedicated himself to charity throughout much of this time. I have never met him and am frankly too young for him to even be one of my favorite players; however, there is no reason for his character to be unjustly questioned.

NO! I love Darrell Green and this does not sound like something he would do! He had devoted his time to his charity and several others and has been and outstanding citizen his whole career in Washington! He is my favorite player of All time and I have the greatest respect for Darrell Green! He always played his heart out!

The only charity he seems to love is his own. He doesn't seem to appreaciate the fans at all. I respect the work he does for his charity and all he's done for the Redskins but othher than that, I could not care about him at all.

Well there's a couple of thousand people that witnessed it first hand at the Ken Harvey event last year... it is not at all uncommon for DG to walk away from autograph seekers, young or old, and apparently, well or sick too.

It's not one interaction... it's repeated interactions... and the incidents grow more and more frequent. For those of you who don't like hearing about it... too bad... there is nobody slinging any mud around here... these are things that have happened.

While I mean no disrespect, I find it funny that the people who have met him have had some negative experiences and the people who HAVEN"T are the ones saying it isn't possible.

Trust me, it is.

Nothing will ever take away the 20 years that DG gave the Redskins on the field, but that doesn't give him a mulligan on every bad decision that he ever makes in his life.

Just like nothing will ever bring back the moment that Darrell looked out at all the kids in front of the stage at the Ken Harvey event and said, 'If you haven't got my autograph already today, then you ain't gonna.' Kids were sobbing their little hearts out... and the thing is... I had a VIP pass and I COULDN'T get anywhere near him, so how could someone without the pass?

Parents tore their Darrell Green jerseys off on the spot, Ken Harvey tried as hard as he could to HIDE... an unmentioned Redskin even said to me verbatim... 'must be nice to be Mr. Redskin and not have to worry about how you act'. I won't reveal who it was out of respect, but sufficeth to say that it was a TEAMMATE of DG's.

How many 'isolated' incidents are required before people accept that it isn't isolated at all... it's commonplace.

This is the LAST time you'll ever hear about this from me... you want to know more, ask me over suds at camp. Otherwise, people are wasting their time trying to make others understand the phenomenon... it's something that people pretty much have to experience for themselves.

And many of us have.

Yeah, I don't see why he would feel the need to say something like that. I don't think I'll keep following this thread, because it's already made me supremely sad.

I had heard of a couple of isolated "no autograph" incidents, but nothing as serious as what biznitchin or Boss have talked about.

Well as the resident Cowboy fan on the board I feel it is my duty to give my 2 cent. (Even though i know some of you could give less then 2 cent for what i think)

I like Boss have personally experienced some of DG less charitable sides, but I have also experienced some of his more charitable sides also. I have also heard about alot of incidents you guys are talking about.

I honestly can not figure the guy out, but I can say I have been guilty of trying to make excuses for some of his actions just because some of the good work he is doing. I still think he is a very private person and wants to keep his interactions limited.

I think Boss is right, people are wasting too much time trying to understand the phenomenon. Let me finish this DRIVIL with this. Darrell Green in my eyes was one heluva player and I always hated to see him lined up against our best recievers.

It really is a shame that as said "Mr. Redskin" is and has always been such a jerk to the fans. He reminds me of one of my other childhood heros Eddie Murray of the Baltimore Orioles. Both could care less about the people that enabled them to make such a good living.

That doesnt sound like Darrell, He must have had a bad day or something pressing to take care of, I had an experence with him that was just the oppisite, It was in Frostburg M.D. when training camp was held there at Frostburg State Collage, Darrell took the time to sign a football I had with me and also to have his pic taken, He even said a few words to my son.. I really do think he must have had his mind elsewhere... Go Skins !!!!

Mark Brunell is another who many say is sometimes aloof with fans. He rarely signs autographs, etc. Yet, he is a Christian who gives his time and money to charity, especially a children's Hospital in Jacksonville. You think they would realize how much impact they have on fans when they ignore them.

It must be difficult being a busy superstar where everyone wants your attention all the time. Many fans are abnoxious, thinking the players owe them their time, autographs, etc., yet many are true fans who truly care for the stars.

Athletes have errands, honey-do's, Dr. appointments just like everyone else. I have a hard time judging them for not stopping and engaging every fan. Of course they are well paid, because they have fans.

No matter how busy, I believe they should at least say, "how are you doing, sorry I got to be somewhere, catch me next time."
