Does Our Offense Suck?
Question : we were 6-2 with wins in Dallas and Philly but finished 8-8 with a problem scoring, maintaining drives, protecting the QB, and getting open at the WR position, so just how bad is our offense? Is it so bad that we miss the playoffs again this year?

Yup. Drafting Oher will help, but we'll still need to replace Thomas and Casey, as well as find a top WR. Next year, we can spend a no. one pick on a QB. and pick up a top LB and DE.
In other words, there's too much to do. We'll be out of the playoffs for at least two years.
It was wrong to cut Taylor. He'll have another great year this season and possibly next. Injuries and being used incorrectly were his problems last season, not diminishing skills.

Does Colt Brennan not deserve a go?
Call Me crazy but I think we go after Cutler !
The only thing crazy about that would be expecting this FO to be that smart.
Attaining Cutler would have as equal an impact as the Haynesworth signing. The two issues that have plagued the Skins are lack of production in the passing game, and a lack of pressure from the d-line. Those two issues have kept the Skins from being legit contenders, and would be hugely addressed. Though I find it completely consistent with history ... We have the 4th rated defense in the league, and a pathetic offense ... what do we do? Spend all of the big money on defensive players.
Though I like the Brennan kid A LOT. He has game, and nice touch and accuracy. I think he could be the sleeper. But there is a lot more risk involved in relying on Brennan to step up than to turn things over to Cutler. But I'd be OK with giving Colt a shot. I think there is a big surprise waiting inside the Kid with questionable mechanics.
Our passing offense and offensive game planning left a lot to be desired - basically, very disapointing.
When Zorn was brought in, I thought that he would help Campbell a lot and that the offensive game planning might be improved.
I have a great deal of respect for Joe Gibbs but I felt that our offense was too predictable. That, and the fact that we had QBs that left a lot to be desired during his second stint here.
I really was disapointed in how Campbell looked as our QB after having a lot of time with Zorn before the season began last year. Especially as Zorn had named him the QB, spent a deal of time with him and was reportedly using an offense that Campbell was somewhat familiar with.
We were 6-2 after 8 games but when you realize how lucky we were in 3 of those games and with Portis having the kind of year he was having, In my opinion, we should have been a lot more effective in the passing game - I do not think we were bad but we were lucky to be 6-2 and with Portis playing like that my feeling is Zorn AND Campbell let the team down.
Last year is done - hopefully we and the team learn from it.
I understand that the offensive line is older but to me there were a lot of things that need improving - game planning, QB play, QB leadership, a real #1 WR and a younger line all need to happen for us to have a good passing game. This will take more than 1 year as the offensive line needs time playing together and is very important in the passing game. This will not happen quickly by just adding a very good (hopefully) RT from the draft.
I think that Campbell is just a good QB - I hope I am wrong and I really hope he can become the QB that Gibbs thought he was but I just feel he is lacking in leadership and his ability to make reads and get rid of the ball, or, do what really good QBs do and just make plays.
So, we are a work in progress on offense - but, we are going to be special on defense for those games that Fat Albert can be a part of

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

He's not going to have a great year if nobody signs him. While I agree with you about his problems last year, I think his injuries and his lack of commitment, may force him into early retirement. He will at least have to take a major pay cut if he wants to play.

Hmmm.. funny, none of the things you list would be a problem fixing if we had not signed Haynesworth.
Build through the draft!

I'd rather save our draft picks and give Brennan a shot then go after Cutler.
Yeah, Cutler is fool's gold. He isn't as good as he looks and evidently isn't mature enough to be the leader of a team either.

In order for the pass offense to suck as bad as it did last year, a lot of things have to go wrong. It's really not even a question, the passing offense was terrible. Here's some of the reasons:
-WR's without prototypical size/speed
-None of the receivers could catch, and even
ey had an off year in the hands dept.
-Qb unfamiliar with system who is a bit slow to throw anyway
-Pathetic pass protection
-Everyone learning a new system
The biggest problem? Drops/lack of good catches. Always happened on third downs and killed drives. The WC is about catching short and getting good YAC. You can't get good YAC if you miss catches.

Basically, yes. Other than Dockery, we didn't do anything to help the offense, which was 90% of the problem last year. So, even if we draft a decent OT, he will be a rookie. Only the top 2 tackles are considered starter ready in the NFL. Oher would be a good pick, but he won't be better than Heyer/Jansen on day 1.
Our WR's are a major concern too. We can hope Thomas and Kelly show up in ironman shape, ready to make up for poor rookie years, but I wouldn't hold my breathe on that. So, it's back to the dropsy smurfs who are decent players but not suited to the #1 and #2 WR roles they've had for several years now.
I predict Campbell will play better, Thomas/Kelly will play better but Haynesworth won't be a huge difference maker and Portis won't start for more than 12 games. So we'll finish 8-8 again.

He had the best season in franchise history for a TE in the hands dept.

He was listed as having three fumbles (one of which would have been taken back if we had challenged), though, so maybe that's what you meant.
He can't be faulted for not being thrown to in the red zone.

You can't get YAC when your QB is forecasting the play to the defense with his dreadfully slow release and tendency to lock onto a certain WR.
Add that to the WR's not being big enough to break tackles.
Sprinkle in a bit of the dropsies.
A dose of wrong routes.
A sack or two for a lil "oopmh".
It's a recipe for disaster.
The road to the number 1 pick gaining speed!

I remember a couple big drops. He wasn't as clutch as usual IMO. He had a lot of yards/receptions, I know. Obviously, he is the class of the receiving corps, I'm not disputing that.

Yeah. God knows he lit it up in the fourth quarter of preseason games last summer.
Seriously the Colt stuff is just ridiculous. Do people honestly believe that former NFL quarterback Jim Zorn would look at three QBs on his roster and not field the best one? You have to be smoking crack.

The thing is that CB caught everyones eye - ok he was just playing late pre-season time but he sparked things up. JC seems to produce the same performances season after season and fails to regularly find receivers other than his main option or possibly second. Sure occasionally he reminds us that he has real talent by making some plays but do you really believe he`s the answer ? - i no longer believe - i don`t think anyone can ignore what a difference TC made when he got the chance at the end of the previous season - suddenly all sorts of receivers were catching balls that were thrown their way - receivers that JC never found open. Theres a reason we saw that and i don`t think it has much to do with TC being a great QB , or his familiarity with AS` offense. The answer is closer to JC being 1 or 2 dimensional. I agree that we have too much to do in the draft to think about taking a QB in the 1st but i`m betting its crossed Zorn`s mind - even if only for a second.

And how does anyone know what Brennan's potential is without seeing him on the field? You can speculate all you want, but you can't prove jack.

I agree, Vet, and not many have seen Colt play since last August. But I think he meant that Zorn knows how to evaluate QB's and will know which one gives the team the best chance to win. During last season, guys that watched all 3 QB's throwing the ball in practice said it was "clearly evident" why Zorn feels Campbell is currently our best option. Colt could emerge, I'm pulling for him and I like him a lot, but I agree with riggofan... Zorn knows QB's and will make the right decision.
