Vinny speaks on ESPN

Post by fleetus »

When asked why he thinks, despite spending lots of money in free agency before, the Skins have not made another trip to the SB, "Well, we started last year 6-2 and finished 8-8, and I think we've added some pieces to help us in the 2nd half of the season"

Really? I recall winning because of the best running game in football and a solid defense. At this point, I'm not seeing how Haynesworth is going to fill the gaping holes at left guard and right tackle.

When asked if the Skins were still in the market for free agents like Canty and Dockery, "We may be interested in some of those...we're running out of money"  Running out of money?

Huh, since when was that a factor? Isn't the government including some relief for the Skins payroll in the economic stimulus package?

Haynesworth's addition could turn us into a scoring defense. Although, we still need dire help and improvement on the offensive side.

Yeah, he's had a successful career in football as a respected personnel man... you're commenting about him on a message board.

HE'S the clown...?

The fact is it doesn't matter what he says or what moves he makes, even if the Redskins won the Superbowl (Vinny's second in the league) he still wouldn't get any credit because of certain people who have decided to scapegoat him.

Aclownsayswhat?

Successful career in the NFL? You mean leaving the 49ers in cap hell and accomplishing what exactly with the Skins? If he was such a respected personnel man how come he couldn't get a job after Marty fired him? No other NFL team wanted anything to do with him, that's why he came back here to be Snyder's lapdog.

I'm with ya and really, I need to get off the Fat Albert slamwagon, but, it's just I was gullible enough to believe that during Gibbs return, he convinced the Fantasy Wonder Twins to de-activate! Guess not. If I were playing Madden, I would love having Haynesworth at DT. But in the real world, signing Haynesworth means, not signing other players we need more, it means, an even MORE top heavy team. Why can't Dumb and Dumber see that almost none of the Superbowl Champions, in the free agency era, have built their team through free agency??? ;furious; :thump: :-& ](*,)

Okay, repeat after me, lub da Fat Albert, lub da Fat Albert, lub da Fat Albert...

He won a championship in San Fran, he has the ring to prove it and this argument about him "not being able to get a job" is absolute foolishness. In fact, it's downright stupid.

Dick Vermeil broadcasted football games after his first retirement, Jim Bowden was an ESPN analyst, Buck Showwalter, Buck Martinez, etc. etc. etc.

All are respected men in their sports... going into TV actually is evidence that they ARE qualified.

I'm done giving Vinnie the benefit of the doubt. After about about 10 years it's OK to judge a man by his RESULTS with this team, and not talk about a ring from 15 years ago.

So I no longer accept the argument that he knows what he's doing just because he happens to have that job. I'm waiting to see if he can display some competence as a GM for the Skins. And even I am ready to admit that personnel has been one of the Skins' weakest points in the last 10 years. (I would say weakest, but then Snyder's skills as an owner speaks for itself.)

Who cares about a ring in San Fran? Tell me what he has done here to prove that he is a competent personnel man.

No doubt I get the skeptism we couldn't consistently score points last year and so far have done nothing to address that, but I don't think it's the dufus comment some do. With AH stuffing the run and JT playing like his whole career except last year then we would have been a playoff team last year.

The Z man is an O guy and I think he thinks we will improve there, and frankly we don't have to a lot. We moved the ball, but couldn't punch it in. We really lost nothing on D except Springs and Washington who just didn't play. And with a couple of linemen and some improvement by JC playing the same system with the same coaches and same personnel two years in a row. I'm not saying he's right, but I'm not seeing it as nuts either.

I'd agree with that sentiment if we could have scored 21 points a game.

$100 million could have gotten us Dockery, Brown, Keamuatu, Canty....

the guy hasn't played 16 games since when, his rookie year?

I see Sean Gilbert all over again.

and Deon.

and Brandon Lloyd.

and Jeff George.

and Bruce Smith.

and Adam Archuletta

you get the picture...

AH is a beast, but he is not worth QB money.

COOL! That means we can parlay AH into 2 extra #1 picks!

AH is a beast

So, here's the problem... of the players you listed (with the possible exception of Gilbert, btw) none could remotely be labeled "beasts" at the time we picked them up. So tell me, how can you compare Haynesworth to them? Teams must now gameplan for AH... that is a huge advantage.

Keep in mind, that I myself am still quite skeptical of this deal, but I'm not going to toss around a slew of red herrings to talk it down. Facts are facts... this defense is not just a little better with Haynesworth... it's a LOT better.

Problem is, our O line still sucks...

I'm waiting to see how that gets resolved before I turn into Debbie Downer...

I'm not sure why some are still concerned about the money. Obviously the cap doesn't apply to the Washington Redskins.

I guess we still get worried every year by the media predicting cap hell, but yet it's never happened. So as long as they are able to sign guys they want and re-sign our own guys when contracts come up, I'll take a wait and see approach. Regardless of the cap hell predictions, they've always been able to get the players they want.
