Draft Impact

Post by hector234 »

With Haynesworth's signing, how does this effect which dirrection the Redskins go with their pick? I saw a few mock drafts having them go defense, DT or DE. You guys think they go after an offensive lineman to fix the o-line woes?

To me, it says O-line and maybe address LB (after O-line).

I still dont think we can know yet because the skins are still looking at FA O-Lineman. If Dockery and the Tackle from Seatle come then that pretty much ends the discussion that the Redskins would draft O-Line and Orakpo or another LB would be most likely.

I still think we will take Orakpo and move him to LB since I know that Orakpo said the Redskins asked him how he would feel playing LB in the NFL.

Darkhorse Sleepers - Smith- Alabama, Oher - Mississippi, Orakpo-Texas, Curry-Wake(not much of a chance on him), Brian Cushing.etc. I am thinking more and more that we will have to fill that LB spot vacated by Washington.
But if we can't get two FA O-Line than I hope they don't ignore the O-line which was the biggest problem going into the off-season.

If Smith is available WE HAVE to take him. He's a top Oline prospect.

What has he done to decrease his stock? He couldn't work out so he went home?

Wow, drop him off the board he'll be lucky to be drafted.

He could work out. He just chose to go home because he was out of shape and looked terrible in the workouts that he did. He also got himself suspended for dealing with an agent and missed Bama's BCS game. All of that after getting absolutely worked by Florida's speed rushers in the SEC championship game. So to sum it up, you have a guy with very questionable character that struggles against speed rushers. Not exactly top 10 material.

If you're talking about JASON Smith, then you're right. If you're talking about Andre Smith, then you'd be dead wrong.

The reports from the combine were that Andre came in WAAAAAY overweight, interviewed horribly, had conflicting stories in interviews as to why he was leaving and was very unimpressive. At one time, he was the highest rated OT out there, but not now. Charlie Casserly even said at the combine that numerous teams have removed Andre from their draft boards altogether.

It's been a bizarre few days for Alabama offensive tackle Andre Smith, considered by most to be a top five pick. Immediately before the second group of offensive linemen were about to start their workout, an official announcement was made stating Smith had left the combine headquarters unannounced. After a long search, Smith was found 30 minutes before the workout began. The announcement went on to say Smith and his agent were giving conflicting stories as to the reason of his disappearance. Sources later said Smith's interviews with teams have been going horribly. He's been inappropriately dressed and has been giving a number of conflicting statements as to why he was choosing not to workout at the combine. Several offensive line coaches have already suggested Smith be removed from their team's draft board and there's no doubt his draft stock is falling.

There is only one upside to Andre in my opinion. If he falls in the draft and the Skins are able to trade down, he may be worth a chance later in the 1st round. Chris Samuels is also from Alabama and maybe he could mentor and help the kid mature and get on the right track. But he's a big risk.

So, I think OT is still our focus, but at #13, the best value still may be an OLB like Orakpo. That's my guess at this time. Andre's and Oher's stock have fallen and are projected to go in the 2nd half of the 1st round. If you trade back, take one. We no longer need a DT and if the top 2 OT's (Jason Smith and Eugene Monroe) are gone, and you can't trade back, OLB is the pick and fills a big need for us.

I just don't see Orakpo as a 4-3 lb. Personally I don't think it's wise to use a top 15 pick on a DE/3-4 lb and try and convert him into a 4-3 lb. With Oher and Smith falling, plus lb's like Cushing falling due to mediocre showings at the combine, it's going to be interesting to see what we do with our pick.

Then you obviously don't follow what the draft experts are saying about Orakpo. Even Mayock has him on the OLB list and not on the DE list. They did a big piece on him the other day and clearing demonstrated how he can be successful in the 4-3 at DE or OLB. There compared him to Derrick Brooks. And with a defense like the one used in Washington, a scheme that uses an OLB that rushes off the edge on passing downs, a conversion guy like Orakpo is the perfect fit. That's why just about every mock from an expert has us taking him.

These comparisons get a little crazy sometimes... Derrick Brooks? *swoon*

I don't doubt that he could rush the passer from the lb spot. I'm much more concerned with his ability in coverage. The comparison to Brooks is a stretch imo. Orakpo has about 3 inches and 30 pounds on Brooks. There aren't many (if any at all) lb's playing in a 4-3 that are 6'3 and weigh over 260 pounds. Orakpo is bigger than both of our starting defensive ends were last season and is bigger than Lavar was when he played here.

Some analysis of Orakpo...

Analysis

Positives: Good height and upper-body build. ... Plays with his hand down, but stands up at times. ... Easily gets off blocks of offensive tackles to make a play in the hole. ... Can also hold his ground well against larger tackles. ... Has good backfield awareness, watching for misdirection, cutbacks and bootlegs. ... Closes on the quarterback well and secures the tackle. ... Shows adequate fluidity dropping on zone blitzes to handle short-area zone coverage as a 3-4 rush linebacker.

Negatives: May need to play on the strong side in the pros because he lacks great explosion and pass rush off the edge. ... Can be easily pushed around the pocket if he tries to use an outside speed move. ... Gets sacks from hustle and effort. ... Does not always change direction quickly enough to make the play on the outside. ... Needs to use his punch more often to get tackles off balance on the pass rush. ... Durability concern. ... Missed multiple games due to knee injuries in both '07 and '08 -- his two seasons as a starter.

Many teams have drafted Tackles early and have had great success. If all the top tackles go early and Aaron Curry is available at no. 13. Well we should take him. He is an absolute game changer and would shore up any linebacker spot we need. He can play inside , outside , strong side or weak side.

It'd be nice to find a diamond in the rough free safety so we could put Laron in the box

I know we have Kareem Moore and Horton but horton is a SS and Moore is still tbd

These guys now have a full year under their belt, and from what I remember, Kareem was coming along nicely by the end of the year.

Would still like to see us draft a pass rusher. If Orakpo falls to 13 there's no doubt we have to snatch him up. Tired of DE being a need year after year with it never being adressed in the draft. Let's bring Orakpo in and we can brag about a solid D-Line for once. Let's let him and Haynesworth go out there and force the QB into some bad passes and turnovers for once. Jason Taylor SUCKS.... just wanted to throw that out there too.

Yeah I like what you and most of the other guys are saying. I'm feeling a lot better about what we can do in the draft now that we're addressing some glaring issues in free agency.

We'll probably try to trade up for Michael Crabtree.

Looking at the draft class of 09 I can't imagine Orakpo sitting there at 13

More likely is one of those OT's Oher or Andre' Smith

No chance Aaron Curry will be there. Right now, he's a consensus top 3 pick in the draft, HERO, and some places have him as the top overall pick.

Scouts has him #1 overall prospect.

Don Banks has him going #1 to the Lions.

Lowest I've seen him is #5 in Kiper's mock. But that's a pre-Combine mock, and right now, Kiper has him as the #1 overall prospect.

I seriously doubt he'll be at 13 when the Redskins pick.

Yeah I just checked out most draft boards. They all are raving about Curry. I was hoping his stock would drop just a tad bit.

Well anyway we seem to be in a good position going into the draft. The main focus should be Oline and Linebacker. When the rest of the depth chart seems to be in decent shape. Another defensive lineman would not hurt either.

I still want to get rid of Jason Taylor though. He is aging and I do not see how he is going to get any better. Maybe we get surprised and the F.O. drafts a great rushing prospect.

RT has to be round unless there's a freak occurance at LB. With a RT that adapts quickly, we could really come on strong at the end of the season when they all gel. They WON'T be gelling in week 1. Maybe Heyer steps up? I think he was a project, but maybe he's got enough shaping now? Note, I'm not proposing Heyer, but how much will he improve this off-season?

A guy like Aaron Maybin from Pennstate. A Hybrid DE and Old ..pure speed rusher..is a possibilty...he ransks between 12-20 on most boards..he played last year at 240 pounds Mike Mayock (draft guru) on Nfl Network said Maybin's play and build resembles Freeney when he came out of Syracuse..
