Skins off-season looking pretty Gross

Post by wormer »

My "sources" tell me the Skins will not be big players in Free Agency, (how could they be given their cap situation), however they will aggressively target Jordan Gross, All-Pro OT for the Panthers.

That would sure shore up RT for us.

I'm sure we will hear more in the weeks to come....

that would be interesting from the perspective that most teams pay the LT big money, and not the RT, but I can't see Gross moving Samuels to RT. Gross would certainly command top dollar as a LT this year, so the Skins would have a lot of money invested in their tackles.

only way i see this working is if we restructure some deals and maybe even get rid of Jansen (if hes not willing to take a major pay cut) hes not worth the money hes getting paid right now.

Its been shown repeatedly that it will cost the Skins more in cap space to cut Jansen than to keep him.

Yep, Jansen's base salary for the '09 season will only be $730,000. Even if you cut him after June, the only real savings would be the roster spot.

Some may think this is stupid but I would not be surprised to see Gross take over Jansen's spot.

Jansen is one of 3 player's whose jersey is on sale for dirt cheap in Modell's in Annapolis.

The other two? Rogers and Marcus Washington.

It's generally been a proven hint in the past. It may or may not be true this time but I'm just putting it out there.

I happen to agree with you, perhaps for different reasons but you might be right..
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

And you free up $1,879,583 in cap space and THREE roster spots

We need to draft players, not sign top tier free agents. Our roster already has too many former free agents. Time to make Cerrato earn his pay.

I think you're partly right here - The mistake has not been so much who we sign or draft but how those players have helped or contributed after they were brought in. I also would like to think that Cerrato can do a better job but he has not exactly done very well so far.

If we start to add players that make a difference it really is not that important what they make - we just need to do a better job of finding players at positions of need, who can contribute in the near term AND we need players who make the other players around them better.

The secret is to have a group of scouts and coaches giving input that results in Cerrato bringing in players from free agency and the draft and trades that help at both the skill positions and provide the depth that every team needs. We don't have any trouble finding the money to pay players we just do not seem to do a very good job of locating players that can help from both the draft and free agency.

I am not sure what we are going to do in the next few months but we are going to need some help for both the offensive and defensive lines and I think that will only come with a combination of what some call "top tier" free agents and a better draft from Cerrato and his college scouts.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Jansen will probably be a cap casualty the season after next. We'd chew up some dead cap this year. The word on the street is that he'll be moved over to guard to finish his time here. Since Heyer isn't cutting it and Rinehardt hasn't impressed anyone. This would make sense. Pete Kendall will probably be back as well.
I'd like to see them get Gross but he'll command a lot of money and we need to patch together some other postions as well. If Springs and Taylor aren't back then we'll have to replace them as well. Marcus Washington has already admitted that he's not going to be back. We got guys waiting behind him but not at his former caliber.
Gross might be just too expensive for us to sign.

I'm thinking that Gross may be beyond our means, as well... if that's the case, this is a year for tinkering. Don't look for much more next season.
We'd have to be real lucky to put together enough line talent to make any kind of serious run.
uhghhhh.

Maybe I'm just having trouble seeing the silver lining, but things are looking pretty grey to me...

It all started with that "hip pocket" comment of yours, causing me to have flashbacks of my Operations Sergeant jumping all over a Squad Leader because he was letting his snuffies waste time instead of using it for some quality HIP POCKET time. (that was one Master Sergeant who could do some quality butt chewing... dude was a artist...)

Then I got all sad, 'cause that's really where I'd love to be right now... in the field, with muddy boots and muddy troops.

Then everything got grey and depressed.

And all I have to blame is you.

Maybe I'll be a little more optimistic later in April. Cool

Two questions:

1 Why does June 1st not count this year? I understand about the CBA not being renewed and that 2010 is, at this point, uncapped. But shouldn't the team still be able to defer half of his guaranteed money due, if they cut him after June 1st, for the 2009 season?

2. Is a roster spot worth 1,171,500 in cap space if the position of need is as great as it is for a RT, when Jansen is contributing as little as he is at this point? He may be worth keeping around as a spot backup, but I can't see playing him as a starter for more than one game in a row now.

Pick up Anquan Boldin and Jordon Gross on Offense

Draft a C/G not in 3rd round

Use the first pick on the best rusher on the board (Texas Orakpo)

Boldin would give us a Prototype Big WR with game changing ability to pair with Moss and Randle El (until Malcom or Devin supplant El at 3rd WR)
