Here are some speculations as to who the Redskins may draft:

Your thoughts and picks.........?
13. Washington Redskins — Jason Smith, OT, Baylor
Now that Brown and Orakpo are off the board, the Redskins won't reach for Michael Johnson. With that said, they turn their attention to the O-line and select Smith.
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/9032 ... round-mock
Washington Redskins: Eben Britton, OT, Arizona
The Redskins have major problems at right tackle. Jon Jansen, who turns 33 in January, is playing on his last legs. Eben Britton would fit in well on the right side, and could potentially slide over to the blind side once Samuels' time is up.
http://www.walterfootball.com/draft2009.php
13 OT, Eugene Monroe, Virginia Monroe (6' 5" 315 lbs) has great feet, but doesn't stay on his blocks as long as Michael Oher or Jason Smith.
http://www.nfldraftdog.com/Mock_Drafts/ ... _draft.htm
13. Washington Redskins - B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College
The Redskins may have their pick of the rather limited DT litter at this spot. Peria Jerry is tempting as a pass rushing threat from the DT position, but Raji, at 6'1" 325, has the bulk to fill the middle arguably better than Perry would.
http://www.draftking.com/nfl/2009/mockdraft.shtml
13. WAS: James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State
The Redskins are almost set of offense. They do need a backup RB but they could find it later. On defense is where the needs are greater. They need to come out of New York with an impact defensive player. The Ohio State product clearly fill that bill. Laurinaitis' work ethic, intensity and passion is very similar to Cowboys' LB Zack Thomas. He will be around the ball on almost every play.

I saw Laurinaitis play against Texas in the Fiesta Bowl. Laurinaitis has the temperament of a great MLB like Lambert or Singletary, the intangible that our FO so often has missed in the last 15 years (not just Snyderatto, Casserly too). I agree though that our line needs are just too pressing at this point to get a LB that high, the last few years of mismanagement have just left the cupboard too bare on the lines. Shame, somebody could get a real beast LB with Laurinaitis.

But, can't you see Snyder already coming up with plans to sell burgundy-and-gold spiked shoulder pads?

I've been stumping for Laurinitis for weeks, we BADLY need linebacker help. Rocky McIntosh has chronic knee problems, London Fletcher is old and Marcus Washington is washed up. The unit is about to implode.
Our only depth at linebacker is HB Blades.
Anyway, even though I like Laurinitis I won't be at all disappointed if we draft Michael Oher... I just got "The Blind Side" the other day. Can't wait to read it.

Suggs is a freak too......but Id think hed be way expensive
If we release el and jansen would that free up enough room to get suggs and Dansby? or would their contracts count aginst our 09 salary?.......Anyhoo there are alot of good tackles this year......I think any of the top 5 would be good......I guess d line would be good at 13 as well

I wasn't discounting the player by any means, I was talking about the author's comment:

Well, I for one agree with the author.
The Redskins are pretty much set on offense. They have a decent QB who'll be entering his second year, they'll use Ladell Betts more this next season to spell Portis and hopefully keep him healthy. Davis, Thomas and Kelly all will have another year of experience,

The only problem is with the line, even though they're a good unit, they lack youth and just a little dept there would keep them healthy.
Defense has huge problems. Both end positions are a mess, Anthony Montgomery is pretty good but Golston isn't a starter and Griffin is wearing down. Washington is hurt all the time, Fletcher is getting old, McIntosh has knee problems, we're probably going to lose Carlos Rogers (for picks I hope!), and we have questions at strong safety.
I think Laurinitis would be an excellent choice, having a guy like that who could come in now and could grow into the leader of our defense and be built around would be really nice.

I don't agree with that assessment at all. Sure Fletcher is getting up there in age, be he still has several good years in his tank, and he is probably our best defensive player right now. Rocky had a season-ending injury to his knee last year, but he came back strong this year, and I wouldn't describe his knee as a chronic problem. Marcus Washington can still play, but he does have trouble staying healthy at this point in his career. Blades is a MLB, and is out of position on the outside, so I do agree that we need depth out there. I certainly don't think our LB unit is about to implode, though.

I want a big, game-changing DT like Griffin used to be for us. If we could just get a push up the middle, I think our ends would improve immediately. They get around the outside, but opposing QB's have five yards of cushion in front of them to step up.
RIP 21

See I completely disagree. Our line isn't good; it needs an immediate upgrade at RT, and I'd argue we have needs at guard and center as well. I can't really determine if DT or RT is a larger need; both are very large, and very obvious holes in our team.
Not to mention that the entire line is aging, and will need to be replaced in the next few years. I mean, none of the guys on this line will (most likely) be playing in 4 or even 3 years. We don't have a replacement ready for any of them.

Complete denial. Depth does nothing when there is a critical need for a starting RT, and a growing need for L Guard, R Guard and Center. Neither of ours RT's can do it. Samuels is beginning to decline, as well.

Haynesworth.
Is it too much to ask that our draft picks this year actually CONTRIBUTE to our season? I get the feeling some on this board don't expect draft picks need to do anything until their second contract.

Whoa, slow down. The Skins could use one maybe even two OLB, just not a MLB. If they can get a pass rushing OLB then great. The OL is the biggesrt need, followed by a pass rusher, I would prefer that guy be a DL, but a Shawn Merrimam type OLB would fill the bill too.
Lets face it Marcus didn't play well at all last year and Rock was benched near the end. So we need at least one stud OLB.

If we do a FA, it should be an OT, assuming a quality one becomes availible. Why? We need immediate help on the O-line if we are to be competitive next year. Yes, you are right... we need help on the D line just as much, but O linemen have among the longest learning curves, because of the need to develop a very complex set of blocking options, and to create a fine understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of your line mates.
D linemen have far less to learn. A rookie D lineman is far more likely to have a real impact than a rookie O lineman. Even if you have a DT who knows nothing, if he is capable of occupying 2 O-linemen, you have gained an advantage. Conversely, an O-lineman who consistently needs help is not good.
If, however, you are ok with tossing the '09 season, draft the O-line at 13...

It is nonsense to trash talk Pete Kendall like this, he was one of the best linemen on the team last season and he's being seriously considered for another year.
