Cowboys Release Runner Troy Hambrick

IRVING, Texas (AP) - Troy Hambrick was released by the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, a move that likely clears the way for top draft pick Julius Jones to be the starting running back.
Hambrick got his desired chance to replace NFL career rushing leader Emmitt Smith last season, but averaged just 3.5 yards per carry. He had 972 yards, which ranked 19th in the NFL, while starting all 16 regular-season games.
Dallas took Jones from Notre Dame with their first pick, the 43rd overall, in last month's NFL draft. No running backs had been chosen when the Cowboys had their first pick, but they traded down and bypassed several running back prospects. Jones was the fifth running back drafted.
After drafting Jones, Cowboys coach Bill Parcells acknowledged that the Cowboys likely would make a move with Hambrick. The four-year running back was released after the team was apparently unable to trade him.
Hambrick's best game in four seasons for Dallas was 189 yards rushing in December at Washington. That was one of his five career 100-yard games, and the third-best game total in team history.
Hambrick had 1,896 yards and eight touchdowns on 473 carries with the Cowboys. He had 42 receptions for 260 yards.
The 5-foot-10, 217-pound Jones was only the fourth running back at Notre Dame with more than 3,000 career yards, but he started just 17 of his 45 games. His college career was disrupted when he missed 2002 because of academic problems, but he returned to run for 1,268 yards last season, including a school-record 262 against Pittsburgh.
