Caps Today

I was thinking the same thing.

They'll need their A-game tonight, but the question is will they have it?

You could tell they were tired versus LA but they put up a good effort. Better than the 5-2 score would lead you to believe.

They just looked whipped versus San Jose.

Four games on the road in six days culminating in a match-up versus a 17-3 team who is 11-0-1 at home...

Not looking good for the Caps tonight.

It also says someting about the depth of this club considering how well they have played with the injuries they have had to endure from the start

Big game tonight, on Versus...

They also seem to not pay attention to the penalty clock. I have seen more breakaways happen when a penalty expires and the recently released player is in behind the defense all alone.

I don't think our goaltending has been steller, but pretty decent. However, I am going to have to listen for this because someone on another message board was complaining about how neither Johnson or Theodore bang their stick to let the offense know the PP is over and that is part of the reason for the breakways.

Another Caps win, as I shift into hockey mode. Caps played a good 30 minutes of hockey, had a few unlucky bounces then played like poo in the final period. If not for Ovie and a poor Isles goaltender, we lose that game. The Caps are a good team, but not good enough to take nights off against anyone.

They are finally starting to get healthy, which is good. They are also destroying the Eastern Conference, including the teams they would face in the playoffs if they were to start today. They are third in the East right now and killer at home. The Western Conference, not so much.

With the way they've showcased the organizational depth by winning in spite of all the injuries, perhaps Snyder should hire GMGM as a consultant.

They almost blew it! But once again the Great Eight saves us. That goal was one heck of a shot!

Yeah, you could tell Alex was pissed about going into overtime. You couldn't get him off the ice, and he wasn't going to be denied that last goal.

Did you see the shot just before he scored that went post-to-post and out?

I know I wouldn't want to be a goalie facing an angry Alex Ovechkin. That's the kind of thing nightmares are built around.

Hope Semin is ok, I watched the Blues feed and the announcers did not make much mention of him after he went off.

The only information I have about Semin is that he's day-to-day with lower back pain. I'll update if I hear more.

He has the best will to win in the game. That goal before that went off the post would've been an amazing shot.

He had a nice goal last night too. I liked him standing up to that guy after he hit Semin low, that was cool seeing him fly over to him after he did it. This team is just really getting better every game it seems like. I like Varlamov, he is playing well for just making two starts and you have to think that the only thing he can do is get better. Even though he got sent back to Hershey today at least we know we have a future goalie that should be good

It's really an impressive team. There is a lot of good, proven young talent on the team (Ovechkin, Semin (when he's healthy...), Mike Green), and the young guys they've called up have played great (Alzner and Varlamov, though he was just assigned back to the AHL).

I can't help but contrast how this team is built to how the Skins are built. Sigh.

WOW! What a game and what a comeback! Ovechkin just was amazing tonight. The first goal that sparked it was amazing and the play with him catching the puck and then putting it in to tie was amazing too. Like someone said earlier, the team just takes his attitude and plays with it. Theres no quit in him and the rest of the team plays like that too.

That game was exciting to watch

I did turn it off at 4-0 and then I came back to it just to see how bad it was going to be and they were only down by two so I had to watch the rest and I'm glad I did. That was amazing. It was cool having morrison score on his birthday and he wears number 26 and I think they said it was his first goal since the 26th of April or something like that.

I'm beginning to love this team. Had a deep affection for the late '80s team, with Langway, Murphy (didn't get enough respect), Stevens, and Hatcher on defense.

It's taking me some time to learn the players -- hey, that number 27...isn't that Mike Ridley???

I've only seen one Caps goal to equal Ovechkin's slide-goal, and that was a goal by Peter Bondra, probably against the (ugh) Penguins in a playoff when Bondra skated pated the goalie, with a defender oh his shoulder, and, somehow, instantly took the puck in reverse, and then snapped a wrist-shot goal that everybody asking, "where did that shot come from?"

We don't see much of the Caps on TV in NY...not like the tough old days of the Patrick Division. We're visiting our son in St Louis, and he has some special package that gives him every game.

Like I say, I'm re-learning the players, but wow!

Good to read the steady Caps coverage here on THN.

(Yes, I have an opinion on retiring Mike Gartner's number, and Langway is the only number I'd retire...but who cares much when they play like this??)

I'm not sure if you already knew this or not, but Langway is one of the Caps' three retired numbers along with #7 Yvon Labre ('74-'81) and #32 Dale Hunter ('87-'99)

I'm not sure about Dale Hunter and Labre. Hunter was a good guy, but a heart&guts player rather than a skilled star. And Labre played so long ago that I suspect management retired his number just so someone ould be retired. The early Caps were so bad that they used to advertise tickets by saying, "...but when we win, it's amazing!". (Like last year's Nats, unfortunately.)
