How long has everyone been a Skins fan?

Since I was 9 years old. 1972 to be exact. My Dad was watching the Skin's play the Packers in the playoffs, I did not have a lot of interest watching football up until then, I ask my Dad which team do We root for and He said Washington. My 2 daughters don't know it yet but they are Redskin fans also. Ages 6 years and 7 months.

I was strictly a baseball fan until 1965 - I was 14 and it was Sonny's 2nd year as a Redskin. My interest in football started in 1964 as the Skins almost won as many as they lost! The next year ('65) they were finally winning (after 10 straight years with a losing record) but one Sunday we were getting crushed by Dallas something like 21-0 but Sonny threw for more than 400 yards as we came back to win 34-31...we still didn't win as much as I hoped until George Allen coached but with the almost-weekly comebacks (thrilling wins and heart-breaking losses) that's when I started to "live and die" with the Skins...

Since about 1975, when I was 4 years old and growing up in central Virginia. At least, that's my earliest memory of watching the Skins on t.v. and cheering them on. Been fanatic about the team ever since. When we're good, I'm labeled a "bandwagon fan," and when we're bad, I'm just labeled a crazed Skin fanatic. The hardest part about living and dying Redskin football was when Spurrier was coach. Living in Jacksonville, everyone assumed that I was a fan because of Spurrier. Jacksonville is pretty much Gator country, so there were a lot of bandwagon fans who really just worshipped Spurrier. However, I am a graduate of Florida State, and I had to constantly tell people that I was a fan in spite of the fact that he was our coach. It was a real test for me, but I never let Snyder's questionable choice in coaches get in the way of my love for the Skins. I felt like my loyalty was rewarded when we got Gibbs back.

Ever since I can remember. My earliest memory was os a 1976 Media Guide, I was 8. If memory serves the cover had the Skins defending a field goal attempt with Diron Talbet & Ron McDole clogging up the middle of the line.

I have been a skins fan since birth because my dad has always been a diehard fan. My dad has been a fan so long that he claims he was listening to the Skins on the radio when they announced the attack on Pearl Harbor. I really don't remember any skins games until Gibbs first became coach.

i was born into a skins family... grandfather... father... me...

the 82 season is as far back as i can remember... before that i was just too young... (i would say the year danny white had the concussion) i think that was the 82 season... i definitely remember beating the dolphins in the super bowl...

Since 1971 season - I was in FL and did not like the fin fans who had such a bad team in 1970 behaving like they were such great fans - I also really appreciated how George had a team attitude and I thought Pat Fischer was a great player for his size! Then came the 72 SB and that plus the puke game on Thanksgiving made me a fan of the heartbreak kids.

Then along came JOE!!!

...since birth. Father and grandfather went to Griffith Stadium in the Sammy Baugh days. I was brought up to know that Walter Johnson was the greatest pitcher who ever lived, and that Sammy Baugh taught everyone the right way to throw a forward pass. Born in 1948, and once got a Charlie "Choo Choo" Justice Redskins uniform for Christmas.

It was automatic: we were all Senators fans and Redskins fans, even in the late '50s when the Colts got good (Unitas, Lenny Moore, Raymond Berry, Gino Marchetti...those guys). I knew one or two in my neighborhood, Hyattsville, who turned into Colts fans after the Colts/Giants overtime playoff, but most of us just cheered for the Skins as they lost, year after year, under Kuharich, Mike Nixon, Bill McPeak, and Otto Graham.

Yes, I have an autographed picture of Norm Snead somewhere.

That just made it better when Allen took the Ramskins to the playoffs in '71.

And even better when Riggins broke free on The Play, and the last Dolphin, who must have been Lyle Blackwood, fell farther and farther behind. (I remember Riggins being asked to comment on the play during the post-game show...he had a raspy, hoarse voice...he said nothing...just watched...as he saw himself hit about the 15 yard line, and the last Dolphin stopped chasing, he said, "Lyle kinda give up". That was all.)

So, this has been a gruesome 10+ years, but everyone who stuck by the team will enjoy it all the more as we watch Joe Gibbs train these players to play like his Redskins teams.

(I must be about 10 years older than NC43.)

For long as I can remember I have been not only a Skins fan but a diehard obsessed fan. I was born in 1983 and My dad has been a season ticket holder since I was 7 and there is nothing better then going to the games! I do indeed miss RFK there was nothing better then when the Skins would score and the stands would start shaking!

Since 1980, the last few games of the Jack Pardee era. My folks lived in DC briefly so me and my two brothers flew over for the school holidays. The following year a new channel in the UK started showing highlights so we could actually see a few plays, rather than wait for a few Washington Post cuttings arrive in the post!

Once you live in DC, you aren't going to be anything other than a Redskins fan!

Of course, then a certain JJ Gibbs takes over, and after a somewhat "iffy" start, as we say in the UK, "the boy done good!"

I was born in 82. I really started following the redskins when i was like 5 or 6. My first game was amazing. skins beat detroit 45-0, It was the year they won the super bowl with rypein.

Been a fan since 1968, when I was 8 years old.

I grew up half way between Baltimore and DC. Where I lived, there were more Colt fans then Redskin fans. Most of my friends were Colt fans, so I started out a Colts fan in 1967. My father was not a football fan, so I had no one in my family to guide me.

I loved Johnny U, until I saw Sonny J play. I started to watch more Redskin games after that.

Then, something deep inside of me was telling me that the Redskins was the team for me, so that is when I became a fan.

My grandfather brought me my first skins hat when I was born. Thanks to him I have never been a fan of the Cowgirls. Skins all the way.

Lifelong fan.......born and raised. My first redskins memory is the Riggin's run. After that I watched and I remember the horrible offseason following the Raiders superbowl. I remember my family cheering when Joey T broke his leg (or should I say, had it broken for him). As NikiH said, Jackson is following in the footsteps of Jake. I have several pictures of him at less than a month old on a redskins blanket with a redskins outfit that was WAY too big positioned like he is running with hands outstretched and a miniture football coming in over his head.....LOL. One of his first sentences was "Cowboys stink!".

I've been a Skins fan since 1963 during the Bill Mcpeak era. I was a big Bobby Mitchell fan. We never had much to cheer for on defense but Sonny, Charley Taylor, Bobby and jerry Smith kept things interesting.

My dad wasnt into football so i had to pick my own team ..Living New York i quickly dismissed the Jets and Giants..AND THEN..I WATCHED THE 82 NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME VS DALLAS AT RFK (FIRST GAME I REMEBER AS A YOUTH)...............That stadium , those fans and that team stole my heart forever.....ITS BEEN BURGUNDY GOLD EVER SINCE..........WELCOME HOME COACH!!......WEVE MISSED YOU DEARLY!!

Somewhere around 1980.

My uncle was a Syracuse fan. Used to take us to some of the games. He used to rave about this one reciever, and told me, "See that guy right there ? He's from White Plains, down by us. He's gonna be a Jet !"
Well, I didn't really have a favorite team, but I really didn't like the Jets, because my uncle would come over and turn off whatever I was watching (in 1980, I was 12. It was probably "Land of the Lost" ,"Adam-12" or "Emergency!") to watch his stupid Jets.
I remember his dejection when his WR didn't go to NY, who had the #2 overall pick. They needed a WR, and there were only two good ones. They took the one from Texas, Lam Jones.
Oh, he was livid. That means, I was thrilled. I looked to see where his receiver went. He went to Washington with the 18th pick.
His name ? Ah, I'll leave you hanging there.
