Is anyone else sick of DirecTV's NFL Ticket tyranny?

When does DirecTV's exclusive rights contract for the NFL Ticket expire? This crap is just getting ridiculously out of control. The cost of the Ticket season has gone up almost $100 over the last 5 years. Then, the price was $160 a year. Now it's $250 and it's just going to keep going up because they know people will pay the price as they are the only place it can be had. If you figure in all the times the games you want to watch are covered on local channels and are shown on national TV, do you realize how much the cost is per game to watch it on the Ticket? You'd also think as much as they're charging you for the Ticket that you'd be able to watch these games in HD. WRONG! That'll cost an ADDITIONAL $150. Now we're talking $400 a year. It's actually less expensive per game to go to a sports bar and order a meal and drink beer during the game than it is to pay for the Ticket. Where does the madness stop?

I can't understand why the NFL can't realize how much money they're losing by allowing DirecTV to continue to have exclusive rights. Can you imagine how many more people would order the Ticket if it were available through all the TV service providers? Can you imagine how much lower the cost would be for the customer? I would be happy to start a petition to send to the NFL to get this done. Anyone interested in signing it?

You know that if this is the only way I can see the Redskins then I will pay for the Sunday Ticket. I think that it's overpriced, but I just want to see my team

It is a lot to pay but I cant bring myself to get rid of it. I just love football too much

I like DirecTV, but it is cheaper for me to go watch them at a bar or listen on Sirius if and when the season heads south. I had it back in 2006 and if you factor the 7 times the Skins played on local TV, I was paying nearly $30 bucks a game, in the end it's just not worth it.

That's just it. It doesn't have to be this way. If we start a petition to the NFL, we can end DTV's exclusive rights to the Ticket and make service providers compete to get consumer's business. It's a win/win proposition for us. Competition in the market means lower prices for us, and more providers means more subscribers for the NFL, which means more money for the NFL. This really is a no-brainer and I don't see how the NFL could turn it down.

How simplistic. You'd might as well say "let's all get together and make the same wish at the same time." That's just as effective.

The only thing that speaks to business is sales... or the lack thereof...in other words, money. The relationship between the NFL and DiredTV has been profitable for both. Why should they change, just because a bunch of whiney non-customers complain?

You want to get their attention, get current customers to boycott. THAT, however, won't happen, for the reason mentioned by several posters already. If I can afford it, I'm buying it, too.

Yup... that means don't count on my help in your boycott.

I believe that if Cable offered the NFL ticket the sales would be much more.

I had Direct TV in the past, then decided to switch to cable so I could get a fast internet connection as well. I did not want to pay for both Cable and Satellite.

There are more cable customers. It makes far more sense to offer NFL ticket to the vast majority of consumers. Why they even made it exclusive is beyond me?

The NFL dropped the ball. They could have just told Direct TV you can offer the service but you do not have exclusive rights. Cable should have the option as well. Its the NFL they have the power. I understand Direct Tv must have paid a hefty sum to keep it exclusive but still Cable could have put forth an offer as well.

So I guess we should be yelling at the cable companies. They knew Direct TV was negotiating with the NFL. They failed to put an offer on the table.

I heard that Directv end their contract with NFL by 2010.... then perhaps other companies will offer it for less...

Competition will always drive prices DOWN..........

The thing is, the NFL makes there money from Directv, not from sales, and Directv makes mo0ney from sales because people that otherwise might have cable switch to watch their favorite team. If the NFL opened it to anyone, they would actually make less, because rights are not as profitable as exclusive rights.

Um...incompetent marketing and endlessly leaving money on the table, that's the hallmark of the NFL. Sure. BTW, your numbers don't include the 150 or whatever it cost for the HD package. Once you have football in HD you can't go back, so the whole thing is like $400 a year now. Funny after complaining about the vast amounts of money they're charging, you say they're leaving money on the table. How does that make sense?

I've lived most of the last 15 years out of the DC area and completely missed watching the Skins every Sunday. I am THRILLED that for years now I've been able to watch each and every Redskin game in all the glory of HDTV. Sure, it's a lot of money, but I love it and it's totally worth it. I'll sign an NFL rocks petition, no interest in a whiny "I want free stuff" one. There's nothing like the NFL, of course you're paying for that...

Sorry for the confusion, Judah. Pretty much anyone that wants Sunday Ticket from someone other than Directv is screwed. I was talking to the thread starter, but in reality, anyone in his predicament is pretty much screwed unless someone can show the NFL how they can get more money selling rights to anyone that wants them over selling exclusively to Directv.

Just remember, they were so happy with that deal that they sold the video game rights exclusively to EA, as well.
